Absolutely phenomenal Style of traditional karate , I studied Wado -Ryu for over 30 years , thought I was damn tough too, until I came up against a Go ju black belt , my God he didn’t hold back my ribs had never been so mistreated in my entire life. He punched and kicked the shit out of my poor body for 3 x 3 minute rounds . I was so happy to hear Yamei . By arms and legs didn’t speak to me for a week . And after chest X-rays because of a couple of broken ribs I was banged up for about 12 weeks . Earned my respect I’ll tell you .

I've been in martial arts since I was 12. My greatest achievement was receiving my Shodan and Nidan from the late Master Teruo Chinen. It made me tough as nails and gave me a solid base when I transitioned to mma (received my Purple belt in BJJ).

@@bigjohn289 can a goju ryu black belt beat a bjj purple belt in a life and death situation?
@bigjohn289 Жыл бұрын
@Supermomo2007 No. It took me five years to receive my Shodan in Goju-Ryu. Another 3 years to achieve my Nidan. Both ranks were given to me by the late Master Teruo Chinen. It took me 8 years to get my BJJ Purple belt. I love karate, but to be honest and realistic, it is ineffective in street fights because they are designed for sports competitions with rules and limits on where you can strike. With that said, I am thankful I studied traditional Goju-Ryu as it is slightly more practical because it prepares you for real-life fighting where there are no rules and no limits. Anyway, to answer your question, a good BJJ Purple belt would easily beat an excellent Black belt. Anybody taking karate should incorporate wrestling or BJJ into their training.

That’s some great stuff Goju Ryu is a popular style of karate that focuses on close range close combat and it is a great martial art that is perfect for self .

He literally just summed up how a black belt should apply the training to life and how 1 should hold themselves to have strength but know when to use it.

For anyone that finds it difficult to understand metaphors; he's essentially saying that Gōjū-ryū is a hard contact style that's highly flexible in the manner of which it is used.

This is ironically backward because the native Okinawans from pre-1900 practiced Tegumi/traditional wrestling of Okinawa and Jissen Kumite with live partners to get good at takedowns, not something like Aikido's non-compliant stuff.

I'm no expert but I've never heard of anyone being a 10th Dan 5th is all I thought it came to well 5th then 1 gold stipe 2 gold and so on must of been a different sort..

soft and flexible have two different meanings the proper for JU is soft not flexible!

So GoJu means an egg falling on rubber... Well that clears that up... LOL No example that uses something from the art and all we see is someone doing a takedown... Typical... JMA...

What you saw is a non-contact group of traditional Goju Ryu Karate. There are practical groups of Goju Ryu Karate which re emphasise freestyle sparring with full contact strikes and grappling IOGKF (video example: The Power of Goju Ryu) like before 1900. Secondly, there are MMA fighters who take elements of Goju Ryu (e.g. circular footwork) like Gunnar Nelson and Conor McGregor. If you want example, search a video called "Gunnar Nelson's Karate - MMA Breakdown" from Ronin Black who is a MMA analyst.

Karate is Okinawan not Japanese. Japanese Martial Arts are Judo, Kendo, Kenjutsu, Iado, Iajutsu, Aikido etc.
