Been practicing Shotokan for almost 10 years and I think this was a great video for seeing a few fundamentals most karate schools practice, put into use by a master. I especially like that you can see the master's relaxed but practiced execution of this kata. My first sensei always used to tell me, "You start off slow and deliberate to learn. Then, you move quickly with power in your kata." The master in this video is, in my opinion, the perfect example of what happens when you apply those in daily practice for years.

It's important to point out that what we see here is mostly kata (form) and this is not to be confused with bunkai (application). For many years I thought the kata was the way they wanted me to fight - and I lost fights as a result! But then I understood the concept of bunkai - applications and variations and modifications and tailoring what I learned in the kata that can be applied in a real self-defense situation. I lost the need for "how I look" and focused on "how can I make this work" , and it worked! This is a great video showing the difference between form and application - or at the very least it's a good place to start. Train always and stay safe 🙏

@@koeikankaratedocypruslimas9322 Yes it is Seipai. However Seyunchin is from 2:10 to 3:44. Several observations on Seyunchin: 1.You slide into a 45° shiko-dachi to the enemy and raise your forearms in a dual block from his kick while simultaneously tearing his body armor upwards and open to expose his vital organs. You then block his second attack of his arm and hit him in the nuts with your lower hand.As you do this you must descend and twist your torso to use your body weight.It's like a huge coil expanding and contracting. That's why body mechanics are so important .2. Seyunchin is a 45° degree diagonal attack sequence to teach you how to move in a counterattack. 3.Seyunchin builds up leg strength to promote self defense. The reason why it's taught early is because it takes about three years to master the kata with synchronized breath. Regards

Including this video I have now heard of 4 disciplines that practice this, one of them unintentionally. I first saw this in a Chris Crudeli video. He was searching for real iron crotch not the false one where u tuck ur bum under so that when ur demo partner kicks it's actually just kicking ur bum. It led him to an obscure southern mantis master. It seems to be the same concept - he was able to retract his balls up past his pelvic floor. Some years later I met a Hindu priest and yoga master who was able to do this and also withstand attacks to the groin. He attributes it to the practice of Siddhasana - a kind of cross legged meditation pose where ur wiener is a hotdog between ur feet, and muladhara bandha - an intense pelvic floor contraction, and a specific breathing exercise. Later I would again come across this phenomenon in gym bro forums. There were ppl who complained that when they do heavy squats, their testicles disappear, not to relax back out until 30-60 min has passed. My understanding of this is they are contacting their abdomen and pelvic floor inwards and upwards - the opposite of the outwards downwards force that can give some heavy lifters haemorrhoids.

Beautiful performance ( the camera not showing all the movements , omits legs too often ) . and what I wish to ad is to underline how rich is the assortment of combination movements. In the reality of fight the instinctive reaction should bring the automatic response . Than the response could be devastating . This maybe the reason that in many so called tournaments the real masters do not participate . Basically the kara-te is NOT a sport . It is too deadly . The kata is not fighting . It is practicing , exercising. Of course we 've all known that , but I have had to say that . Sorry.

It's surprising how people give information away on the internet. Karate is different since the invention of the camera.

World is different now. Wars are won with information, politics, manipulations rather than weapons and knowledge on how to kill a man. These days it's only about money mostly. People are too lazy to actually learn stuff. No motivation. So sharing knowledge with everyone is totally fine.

Daniel Quinn I disagree. It makes karate better to share info. So many style share katas - taikioku, pinan, and makuso katas. Yet they all get performed differently like seeing the same song sung by different singers. The interpretation of movements is like the different dialects of spoken language. Goji-Ryu is not my style, by the forms and moves are the same only applies slightly differently. This is what makes this an art form.
@danielquinn3125 жыл бұрын
@@matthewbittenbender9191, I didn't say it was a bad thing just that it'd different. I've also had that same thought about katas being like songs and how they can be performed differently. Live song performances are often different, David Bowie is great at changing his songs around. I know that you can perform katas at different speeds, in confined spaces, with a partner, different clothes, ground surfaces, shoes, change a move or so, and more. I would like to add that martial artists have been secretive for a few reasons. The main reason is to keep it out of the hands of bad people.

I notice the difference in speed of combinations in the Katas - I started to learn Shukokai Karate and the katas are very similar, just the combinations are faster with only slight pauses between each to re-centre. Thanks for a good video! Oss!

I don't see anything, just kata of doubtful value. Would be far more convincing to show a sparring, even a light one, and show application of his techniques. Considering him powerful just because of the atmosphere or his physique is extremely naive.

Alex Mash I’m looking at his movements and the intent behind them. The confidence and the muscle memory that only comes with decades of discipline and dedication.There is a difference in a novice doing kata and a seasoned practitioner. Not every thing is about sparring and fighting. That’s the modern MMA/jock mentality. This is a man who is in his late/middle years who will still be in good shape as he ages. I’m sure if he had to defend himself in real life he could. Sport, competition, sparring is a small component of martial arts.
@alexmash13535 жыл бұрын
@@Cab0408 Competition... yes, small part of it. Sparring? Definitely not. How do you know if it works if you never really applied it? What is the basis of your confidence? If just by doing kata year after year, then it is baseless. Like reading cooking books and practice cutting with knife movements without cooking anything and boldly calling yourself a pro cook.

@@1986Unlimited Cool. I wonder why I still cannot see anything even if I watch karateka of different styles spar with any other schools. Guess it is far superior for my jock mentality then. Oh well...
Every karate video ever, have an intro with people dong some moves, sparing, or being hit with something, a few minuts of talking about how tough some old guy is, then the old guy being hit with blunt object on a piticular ariea, followed by more talking and hitting old people or their students. Non of this is in any particular order but you will see similar patterns in these videos

I still in my opinion, SPM is the influnce of the okinawa goju and uechi and not the white crane as some say. This master have so much internal chi which blow the strikes outside that can kill with one move, add to that his stone bones like you being hit by stone. Must be SPM.

Agree 100%. I have trained the Meibukan System of Goju Ryu since 2005 and I have always believed that this is definitely SPM.
@varanid95 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily. Forget "chi power"; the body dynamics on display here are common to most Fujian boxing styles, not just SPM. I have read, however, that SPM was an influence on Miyagi, but, of course, such things aren't provable. I've found that, when it comes to Fujian boxing, stylistic differences mean far less than the differences in the way that individual teachers of even the same "style" train their students.
@hideentity15185 жыл бұрын
Dont know, lots of thing he is saying or doing here are much same philosophy strategy of the body as the SPM, this man have no discount for nothing in his spirit, body and mind and so the true SPM style, grounding himself, use his hipes as motor, sqweezing, breathing as a force method, the only thing i can see different is the locking hands after the box end and less circular motion.
