Goku in Kai gave me almost antihero vibes after his first Super Saiyan transformation. That anger felt so genuine that he could have quickly killed Frieza any moment after telling him "You're the scum of the universe. And I'm getting sick of it!". This proves Akira Toriyama-sensei's point of being afraid of turning Goku evil after said transformation in one of his interviews.

He wants to defend the earth and his friends and family, sure, but he craves battle and power and getting stronger and stronger. Him letting go almost all of his opponents is both an act of compassion and complete selfishness. The only truly selfless act he does in the og manga is sacrificing himself to teleport cell away, because he didn't want anyone else to suffer from the consequences of his actions. Even against kid Buu he and Vegeta did not fuse because they both crave a 1v1 battle with the monster. Again, an absolutely selfish act
