Just to clear up the claims people have of bias (which is for sure a factor in some episodes) Between the two creators of this series, Ben and Chad, both of them have always been big fans of Goku, and while Ben learned to appreciate Superman after doing the research for these episodes, Chad still hates Superman with a passion. This is why in this episode in particular, they went out of their way to soften the blow in several ways, including calls to reason, acknowledging that Superman is _too_ overpowered, specifically calling Goku a great character for _not_ being overpowered, having Superman respect Goku enough to kill him painlessly, and even having Goku himself decide he's fine with the outcome. Bias definitely creeps its way into some episodes of this series, as it always inevitably will when making these kinds of comparisons, but Goku vs Superman 1 and 2 are easily two of the least biased episodes of Death Battle ever made.

Controversy aside, I do seriously agree with their reasoning for WHY people get so heated about the debate of who between these two would win. It's because of how much they inspire. To them, having their childhood hero lose to another similar hero feels like an insult to what their favourite stands for. That's why this debate still rages to this day. And honestly, I hope it continues to. Since it shows just how much people can be impacted by fiction, and that they're more than just drawings.

Well I think a lot of people were actually mad because Goku's stats were not accurate, the death battle was super saiyan blue was stupid because no one even knew anything about the transformation. Not to mention the fact that made Goku destroy the Kryptonite but for some reason made Superman evil enough to destroy a planet🤔( which is something the Boy Scout would really never do). Then you got the Captain Marvel vs 18, a fight that Captain Marvel should probably easily win but for some reason 18 can absorb more energy? Why? Because she could do in the video games.

In the Tournament of Power you couldn't kill people and they weren't going all out to conserve energy for the next threat. It's not accurate scaling since Goku at full power could have easily dealt with a lot of those threats. That's like saying the Kamehameha in SSGSS that Goku threw at Krilin makes him that level in strength, of course not. It's all about the amount of power each individual is outputting, God Ki is above anything Controlled Ki. Same way why none of these characters destroy the Earth whenever they train. When Goku fought Berus the collision of their fists were sending shock-waves through the entire universe which the Kais stated could mean its destruction (same way a fight between 2 Gods of Destruction would result in the end of both universes). Even Buu in Dragon Ball Z when enraged was starting to destroy reality itself and travelling to different dimensions just by shouting, ripping a holes in space time. People really have no idea how strong these characters really are. When Universe 11 were arriving at the arena, and as Jiren was about to be teleported, the whole World of Void (an infinite place outside of the multiverse without time or space, full of infinite nothingness) was literally shaking just with his aura. And Goku beat Jiren. If people follow the manga, he and Vegeta will get vastly more powerful. Not even saying he would win or not against Super Man, I just think this usually goes over people's heads.

So i agree with the overall outcome, but DB failed to account for a number of things like how in his base form after the Beerus fight, Goku is low-multiversal. By the end of Super, his base form is significantly stronger than that. He improves immensely in the Tournament of Power and his base form could likely take of Fusion Zamasu. His base form is easily multiverse destroying at the end of Super, not including his various transformations. I still dont think he would beeat full power Superman, but they still did him dirty in this fight.

Just got to add my correction here, being most of you all weren't alive back then. And only references of the information is from copies of a tv guide in the late 90s online. Dragon ball didn't come to the states in 96...... It came in 1990. On the upn animation action lineup at 3pm mon-fri. And DBZ came in 1993, Sunday morning at 6:30am for the weekend action extreme blocks, preceded by another anime "Botz master" which was a rerun block. I was in 3rd grade in 93, and for an 8 year old to be awake on a weekend, a Sunday even, before 10am....... My parents often checked for hell to freeze over.

Fighters include Vegeta, Master Roshi, Mr. Satan, Android 18, Majin Buu, Beerus, Trunks, & Broly. Composite GT and movie Goku is probably stronger than super Goku at that point in time. The match is closer than you think because they pretty much completely removed any Universe scaling from the anime pre-super. The Z anime is likely Universal + and GT would upscale from that.

Lifting infinity as a feat/reason is dumb. Why? Because infinity always has a set number at any given time. Infinity just means that a number keeps climbing at a non-specific rate. Thus, it can't properly be measured. Not because the number is too high, but because of a lack of information. Eternity? I don't know, but may fall into the same category. Yeah all this demonstrates to me is that Superman as a character just kind of sucks. What terrible writing. Not that Dragon Ball necessarily is anything to write home about in the writing department either but at least Goku is kind of believable and has actual flaws. What I don't like is how these pieces of biased content supposedly "settle" this nerd debate. There is absolutely a case to be made for Goku winning this fight. All Goku has to figure out is to teleport him to one of those red stars that drains Superman and it's an EZ clap from there on. The first battle is still total bull. Holding Goku to his weakness of wanting a fair fight but not Superman to protecting the Earth is blatant bias.

Superman's entire character development is shoehorning in elements of humanity or historical events into him for him to then act as a billboard for. The setting of Dragon Ball doesn't allow for social commentary on our real world issues. It's a very basic premise about going on adventure for the sake of discovery and overcoming your limits. Also Goku is an intentionally flat character and does overwhelming better than majority of flat characters.

One of the biggest issues is thisbbattle was done at the time when there was no information bout God and Blue. Even kno there no real numbers or even multipliers. I'm not 100% percent sure but I think this battle came out before DB Super the anime. And if you watch the abime and read the manga the main thing from ToP is that Saiyans break all limits. My theory is Toriyama heard or saw the Death Battle and got triggered and brought Dragon Ball back to prover Goku can beat Superman lmao, just a theory.

I love both characters, the outcome IS fair and I even agree with it. But, to me, it feels unsatisfying because Goku earns his power while Superman is just built different. Goku sweats and bleeds for his power while Superman just complains about how the world is made of cardboard. At its core it's just the eternal conflict between hard-work and talent and I can't help but root for the underdog.

Just for reference “pre crisis” is referring to the event crisis on infinite earth which rebooted the DC comics characters, and most of Superman’s most ludicrous feats happened before that reboot. Also I think all the people who scream “biased”, these guys who write death battle all love their anime just as much as comics so I don’t get where that line comes from. The DC heroes are gods among men so they’re meant to win their fights against even more ridiculous villains than you see in anime or manga so it’s not so much a biased as much as bad matchups

My point was that people say the Death battle crew has a bias against eastern media in favor of western media, DC in particular, but the reason West usually wins these matchups is the fact that the DC characters are dummy OP and are intentionally written to be dummy OP. The fact that Goku is the embodiment of surpassing limits and Superman being limitless makes them the perfect poster child for why those matchups end up the way they do. Not to say that DC heroes are unbeatable but just created to be way stronger than most if not all other fiction characters. That was my point

Superman v Goku is going to be an eternal debate because both characters are so symbolic and are still growing. I’ll always lean towards Supes for this simply because the speed difference and the resistances he’s built up. Please keep these death battle reactions up, there’s some more good ones out there.
