Fun fact. This episode was first aired at SGC in 2015. And during the fight, when they fly through the SGC building, they paused the fight and had actors run Into the room dressed as goku and superman and fight for a minute before charging out of the room and continuing the video. Fun stuff!

@@Sachi10007 To clarify, Whis made that assertion at the end of BoG, when Toriyama had no clear concept of how he would continue the story. The movie is "technically" no longer canon, as the retelling of the movie that is season 1 of DBS is the new canonical telling, during the end of which Whis merely states that Beerus lied about using his full strength against Goku, never giving an actual figure as to how much of his strength he did use. The reason that was retconned was to keep Beerus relevant to Goku's continued training. The original description of SSJ was that it multiplied Goku's base strength 50x, and since they used that same description for SSJB, that it was the SSJ version of the SSJG form, that implies that SSJB would absolutely *dwarf* Beerus's power if he did need to use 70% just for SSJG alone.

The reason Superman was walking though the Kamehameha is due to it being a physical attack. Ki is not some magic ability, it's the user's own Ki being made into a physical form into Ki Blasts and moves. Hell, there have been plenty of DBZ characters weaker than Goku who have tanked hits like this like Frieza for example. Superman's major weakness are magic based attacks and Kryptonite. He is pretty much a unstoppable force Goku could not beat.

“What is Pre-Crisis” You need to learn how to listen. This episode had an entire segment explaining that. Crisis on infinite Earths was a comic series that ended the DC universe and and reset it. This reset changed some characters and permanently killed others. Superman was heavily nerfed. There have been other reboots since then. Siuperman comics before that initial reset is call Pre-Crisis as in BEFORE CrIsis on Infinite Earths.

The official name of that form is actually Super Saiyan Blue. In the Dragon Ball Super, they couldn't stop biting their tongues from saying Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan everytime, so they change to Super Saiyan Blue to be more easy to pronounced.

it's very hard to say actually. SA did a horrible job on both. Both series are incredibly inconsistent and random. Superman's powers change like every other comic and goku can also sometimes chill in a black hole (in the ToP arc), destroy the universe in 3 punches as just super saiyan god (vs beerus) and travel at 7.5x10^14 times the speed of light as super saiyan god, not even blue (relative to whis), but then at other times he gets hurt by a bullet (filler episode), freeza having the power to destroy a planet is still a big deal (against toppo) and dyspo being faster than sound is supposed to be a threat. the writers of both shows are random and inconsistent as hell so that's why goku vs superman is an endless debate that can go either way and everyone will have their own canon

@@blazejecar Superman’s physical prowess is wayyy too much for Goku, superman punches planets and destroys them, Goku needs ki to replicate such feats. Not to mention the speed in superman comics is absolutely insane and is on an entirely different level than dragon ball, there’s multiple times where superman travels from planet to planets all while in the middle of a fight that lasts seconds. Goku needs instant transmission to come close to those speeds as well, they are just in completely different leagues and that’s coming from someone who used to shit on superman all the damn time cause I thought he was boring.

Hell, destroying the moon was a casual thing in early DB when everyone's power level was like...50. Needing ki is irrelevant since dbz characters always use it. and again, 7.5x10^14 times the speed of light (without instant transmission) means 225 septillion km per second, aka 24 million lightyears in a second. DBZ has much bigger feats than screwattack would lead you to believe

Quite right on DBZ being older! 96 was when the Funimation English dub was first aired, the show ending in Japan around the same time. The run of the show on Cartoon Network started in 98 with these episodes, and that's when the show got big here. As for the original run in Japan, that started in the late 80's

But at the time, nothing was Game of Thrones. Heroes were good guys through and through. You never lived in the time of Stallone, schwarzenegger, Segal, Gibson, and Willis. Not to mention the superheroes of the time. Superman was even more popular than Batman and Spider-Man dispite both having successful cartoons. But more than that his obsession with letting others suffer so he can have a better fight. You think Riggs would let the killer of his wife live so he can have a better fight next time? So in order to make Goku more appealing to audiences, they made him more like Superman for the dubs. There are a lot of dubs for this show. in multiple languages .At least 5 in English, three of those were done by Funimation. I really wish Toriyama was allowed to go through his original Idea of leaving Goku dead after Cell, so Gohan could take center stage of the next installment. Instead we got a return to form. By making Goku the lead again, Gohan got nerfed And the show went back to formula of everyone losing till Goku arrives for the last fight. In essence I find Goku as boring as Goku fans find Superman. Dragonball is old, The sequel series DBZ came to the US 1996. Now I remember seeing DBZ a long time ago. Before the show got on Toonami. (a special line up of anime and other teen focused cartoons on Cartoon Network). I was channel surfing when I was 6 and stumbled on the ocean dub of Goku's first transformation I never figured out what I saw until Toonami in 2000 It is my opinion that Dragonball's humor, action, villains', and adventures are better that DBZ.

Plus, if this episode were made today, we'd have thing like a sunlight-starved Superman breaking an infinite void in order to reach and one-shot a guy who creates entire multiverses, so Goku got off easy here.

Superman has stated himself before that when he’s focused there is no force that will make him move if he doesn’t want to and considering all of his feats hard to argue with that. Superman is just built different Goku just can’t compare to him and win. Like if we wanted to be really realistic it’s not out of the question that Superman could one shot him if he wanted too cause when Superman doesn’t hold back there’s next to no one that’s beating him.

not sure if it was mentioned, I missed it if it was, but in my opinion Goku's greatest weakness in this battle would be his pride, which is not his fault simply being a pure a sayan will be his ultimate downfall in this fight. Remember in the shows the sayans were constantly obsessed with fighting enemies with great power even if it meant losing the fight. Like when Goku paused his battle with frieza just so frieza could reach max power (at the time) and it almost cost him his life with namek's time was running out, or when vegeta paused his fight with imperfect cell so cell could absorb android 18 and reach his perfect form...vegeta could've ended the whole cell saga with his fight against the 2nd form of cell right then and there but because vegeta wanted more of a challenge it almost cost him his life along with everyone else on earth if it wasn't for gohan. Also when king kai warned Goku about facing beerus (a literal god of destruction), Goku completely ignored king kai's warning and was hell bent on facing off against beerus. Sorry for rambling here but bottom line is if goku found out he could have the potential to face off against a more powerful Superman by allowing him to absorb energy from a yellow sun or even a blue one (which increases superman's power even more) goku will not hesitate to make that happen. Even if goku was evil like Vegeta was it still wouldn't matter, their thirst for ultimate challenge could never be quenched

I think my favorite part of this insane debate is how much it inspired my newfound love and appreciation for OP character writing When a character is OP, how do you write conflict? Most average people would give up and Nerf or tweak the character, and anyone outside whines that the character is too broken and so that makes them a bad character automatically When really, you just have to approach it from a completely different angle More knowledgeable people have said it before me, Superman's struggles aren't due to strength, it's due to the moral aspects of someone with his absurd power and what he chooses to do with it, that's interesting Like, if Superman's a boring character because he's too OP, surely saitama from one punch man is terrible too right, he kills everything with a single punch, how could you possibly write a story about that character? Those in the know get why saitama is an interesting character, same for Superman Hell, in my own story, my character reaches pretty devastating power, but they constantly, every single day, have mental struggles with their self esteem, thinking about if they're doing the right thing, and constantly reminding themselves about how they weren't trained or prepared for the life they took on, they started off as a nobody and are now widely considered the most dangerous person in the Galaxy, and they has to wrestle with that, it's only through the intervention of someone who tries to help and care about who they are at their core that they're able to share that pain and heal from it, grow from it That struggle is interesting, it's relatable, and gives the character multiple dimensions to them, while having nothing to do with their level of power A character should never be defined by their power alone, but by who they are

I still don't understand why they did this fight so early into super honestly. I don't think they'd change the outcome if they waited until UI, but it still irritates me. That said, this is still honestly one of my favourite fights in the series. It would such a fun fight imo. And I *love* the kill, it was super in character for if superman where to kill, especially someone like goku. I know its not as intense or... world shattering as GVS 1, but that's exactly why I think this one's better.

It doesn't really matter because at no point will Goku reach Superman's level. It would literally take him turning into a god that has never existed in DBZ's universe in order for him to even be on par with Supes. So yeah, they COULD have waited. But it wouldn't matter when they did it. Because unless Toei finally decides to retire Goku and make him literally unkillable, which would defeat any kind of enjoyment we had in DB, then he would never beat Superman.

The Superman they used in both of these battles was basically an amalgam superman a fusion of many different versions of superman so its not surprising that goku lost, cause it was unfair and they always do this with DC characters which is so frustrating

It's not really "unfair." If anything, it's the most fair and just the nature of the medium both characters come from. At the very least, they do their best to limit Supes to the Earth in the main universe, not including stuff pre-Crisis (which is Archie Sonic levels of absurd) or feats from alternate timelines unless the main Superman interacts with them directly to make a direct correlation. But even that limited, Superman has a massive library of canon material to go through and consider, penned by multiple writers through literal decades. Comparatively, Goku has only a miniscule amount of canon material to consider for feats; in terms of material to pick feats for both characters for analysis, Goku has the equivalent of a book to Supes having a wing of a library. You can pick and choose moments from Superman's history that at least make him a matchup Goku could win, but that takes away from the integrity of a pure and true (as possible) comparison between two characters to determine who would win. Call bullshit on inconsistent writing for Superman (you have no argument from me there, though let's not act like Dragon Ball has been the paragon of consistency in writing lol), call bullshit on the nature of Superman as a character; you have a right to have an issue with those. But don't act like it's "unfair" when people want to pit a character like Goku vs one like Superman and this being the result you get; Dragon Ball has a notable power creep issue in terms of its escalation, but DC Comics and Superman in particular have had that same problem, for a longer period of time, while already starting at a higher benchmark due to what Superman is meant to represent.

@@Mrryn the nature of Superman as a character as well as how powerful he is depends on who's writing for him and what they're idea of what he should be like is, which in recent years has mostly been either boring and invincible or a jerk who is about to or has turned evil with angry red glowing eyes. often both, which i find quite frustrating cause i love the all star superman version of him as well as superman vs the elite movie version of him, just wish the mainstream movies could capture that more rather than the former

@@hrafnknutsson2859 Agreed. I'm a fan of Superman but never in a "power gaming" sense of all the wacky ultra powerful stuff he could do. I appreciate his origins as an immigrant integrating into society but with his differences being superpowers and using them to right the wrongs and defend the innocent in his new home. And the stories you cited are modern examples of that exact philosophy and the reason I love the Superman character: it's about his mindset as a demigod in a world yet still doing everything in his power to be a genuine force for good and to do his best to be steadfast in his ideals despite conflict, adversity, and shortcuts he could take at the cost of himself. Not a matter of "could" because he could, but whether he "should." Not about his power but his integrity and ideals. Not about his invincible body but his at times struggling heart, mind, and soul. After all, what's so funny about truth, justice, and the American way?

No matter how much any of us primarily Goku fans want it we all know that supes beats him. Goku hits limitations but then breaks through them however Superman has no limit. Although funnily enough you can beat Superman unconscious if you hit him in the head hard enough and multiple times, this has been shown to be true whether in comics or TV show. Sadly though that does not make it so that he will lose since he'll just wake up almost immediately anyways

The simplest fix would have been to call the red form Saiyan God, and the blue form (when he combines god ki with Super Saiyan) Super Saiyan God. Toriyama going with the Super Saiyan God name in Battle of Gods kinda screwed him over in terms of naming when the inevitable escalation of the form happened. Notice how Vegeta's upgrade to Blue doesn't have a distinguishing name and Goku has just moved forward to Ultra Instinct and trying to master that instead? lol
