Call it fate ... if Zach hadn't come to Colorado, I probably wouldn't have gone out that day as I was exhausted and on my third day in a row of hard core detecting. The most amazing part of this video, aside from finding that awesome piece of history, was seeing it from Zach's perspective and hearing how he got just as excited as I did when he saw it. My head was spinning so much, I didnt notice it in the moment. Great capture Zach, thank you for being there with me during this incredible find and thank you for coming out to Colorado and coming out with us. You are welcome anytime.

Zach, my 3× great grandfather, Peter Filatreu Cross (1815-1862), designed the reverse of that $1 gold coin in 1849. He was an assistant engraver to James B. Longacre at the Mint in Philadelphia. It was, at 1/2" in diameter, the smallest coin ever made by the U.S. Mint. They changed the thickness and diameter of the coin in 1854 because people were losing those coins! $1 was equal to $31.56 in today's purchasing power. Great find! ~Bill Stephens

That was fun watching Ken freak again. Saw it on his program. I am going to tell the button story. A young man was in the navy. When he got out, he set out to find his fortune in gold, taking his navy jacket with him. Life was rough in the mountains out west and he lost those two buttons, maybe in a fight. If there had been more buttons, I would have thought something happened to him and his jacket was left behind to rot away. Congrats Ken!

Again Ken, so happy for you and also for the rest of the crew. A gold coin, especially a US, is just as special as it gets. So crazy how sometimes the circumstances involved in detecting and where you’re going that day seem to create amazing finds. I watched Kaye from “Kaye’s diggin it” dig a Cob right next to us in the fill or push dirt. The only reason they were there is because Emma and I decided to go there for a while before work. A cob!!
