Very true. The additional weight consists of a silver-copper alloy that adds significant durability to the coin. That makes it a superior coin to the Buffalo to me. 🤷🏻♂️

When Speg says pure gold I believe he's saying that the gold in the Buffaloes is 9999 fine whereas a gold eagle has copper and silver added so it doesn't look as good and is not as pure. He's not saying that they aren't an ounce of gold
@goldcic2 жыл бұрын
There was not an ounce of gold in the pre-33 coins because they were meant for circulation so they needed toughness.& the price was fixed at $20 for the Saint. The krugggerands also are 22k but have an ounce of gold in them With flowing hair silver dollars and 1795 mint director Rittenhouse & Assayer Albion Cox upped the silver content weight by a bit without telling Congress or the President. You brought your own silver or gold back then and they'd mint it for free. Of course they got sued and the client got several thousand dollars 5 years later. Spanish vob and in 1733 silver reals along with thallers and brit coins circulated legally until 1853. The US had no gold of. It's own until some was found in Randolf & Cabarus Ctys, N. Carolina in the 1830s. There are private mint coins one of which I'm considering now. Them the US finally built a N. Carolina Mint, which are caving in now around the football stadium. Then came gold at Sutter's Mill, Mexico. Mexico didn't hear about it until we took Cali as a war prize two weeks earlier. I have a fairly high grade PCGS 1854 (private mint) that says "bent⁸ on it. You çam see teeth marks on it. I guess they really did that as a highly reliable gold test. 🐥🐣🦷🦷

The gold eagles contain 1 oz of gold, same as the buffalos. The additional metal is copper and silver, which means the eagles weigh more than the buffalos. That might explain the price difference. The higher durability of the eagles is, IMO, a non issue as nobody is carrying these coins around in their pocket change. Having said all that I personally prefer the buffalos.

I'm surprised actually that a lot of people don't know Eagles are alloyed. Why they are this way is really just a throwback to not only pre-33 coins, but also the English Crown. They were alloyed to make them hardier for "circulation." Obviously Gold Eagles are NIFC but they kept the "Crown" formula. I do like the gold Buffalo's more. What *I* would really love to see is the Silver Buffalo's come back (as 999 instead of 900) Everyone and their brother makes a generic Buffalo round and people eat them up. A real silver buffalo like the 2001's would definitely be a big seller.

_I prefer the bisons/buffaloes; Gold Buffalo coins have a higher purity at 99.99% (24.1-karat) compared to Gold Eagles, which are 91.67% pure (22-karat). Although both coins contain the same amount of pure gold (1 troy ounce), Gold Buffaloes are often more appealing to investors seeking higher-purity bullion._ _For example, if you're purchasing 10 coins, each containing 1 troy ounce of gold, both Buffaloes and Eagles have an equal gold content of 10 troy ounces. However, Buffaloes are more easily recognizable for their purity worldwide, which can increase liquidity and demand in certain markets. Therefore, while both options provide the same raw gold value, Gold Buffaloes may fetch higher premiums, especially in purity-conscious markets, making them a potentially stronger strategic investment over time._

I would really like to see the U.S. Mint try a new design, obverse and reverse, for bullion coins instead of resting on the laurels of coins past. The Walking Liberty is the most graceful of all coins, though, imo. Understandable as to why that design was resurrected for the ASE obverse.

I like both but one big thing I like about the eagles is the specific sound they make when you ping them. On top of the durability I have been involved in some private sales where for me it’s a lot easier to ask to ping the sellers gold Eagle vs asking the same for the softer Buffalo. In a situation where you don’t have access to a sigma or more advanced testing methods, those who have an ear for the sound of a gold Eagle will know it’s authentic by that specific frequency drawn out ring. The buffalos make a sound as well and also come with their own benefits but I am speaking from experience of doing private transactions where sigma testers aren’t available and fractional gold is a common theme.

The eagles are still a full ounce of gold, you’re just getting more metal with them. Because their primary trade is done in the US. If we were trying to trade eagles in other countries, they’d frown at us and ask for the buffalos as globally the standard has become 9999. Im hoping they change the eagles to 4 nines in time. The only practical reason to buy the buffalo over the eagle is if you want to melt it down into your own alloys for lower karat jewelry. Purity is important for giving you full control over the alloy composition. But let’s face it, nobody is buying buffalos to melt them. That’s what bars and grains are for. Otherwise, the added durability of the eagle is a significant improvement. The small amount of silver and copper boost the durability by a significant amount. It approximately doubles the hardness relative to work hardened pure gold and is an increase by up to 6x versus unworked annealed gold. For most people, the odds that you accidentally drop the coin or someday put the coin in your pocket and walk around are greater than the odds you melt a buffalo for use in a gold related manufacturing process. All else equal, get the eagle.
