We lost 85% of our inventoried fish (and lots of un-inventoried fry and juveniles) in the Texas Winter Storm. After two major hurricanes in the last two decades, we've discovered that it takes about two years to fully recover after a major disaster. I suspect it will take that long this time. Charles

I'd love to have a trio of those, when you get their numbers up again, Charles. Question? I've heard of a population of Jordanella Floridae somewhere down there between you and the coast - do you know where? Long ride from Fort Worth, but they're my favorite fish to keep and, if I take some from an invasive population, I'd be doing the world a favor. I used to catch my own in some skinny water Southwest of Orlando, and from the Saint Johns River below Sanford. Also used to know three locations in Florida for fully freshwater Hogchokers, 50 miles from salt water. Still learning Texas, what's here, what's collectible, and where. Suggestions welcome!
@goliadfarms70292 жыл бұрын
We should have some of these mollies available next summer. I checked with USGS Nonindigenous Aquatic Species (see nas.er.usgs.gov/viewer/omap.aspx?SpeciesID=663) and don't find a reported populations of Jordanella floridae in Texas. I suspect they would thrive here. We used to have them, but Hurricane Harvey took care of that. Nearby here, at US77 and Coleto Creek, are introduced populations of Poecilia formosa (an all-female species called Amazon Molly) and Bluefin Killifish (Lucania goodei). There are lots and lots of native fish. In your area there are some nice Fundulus species, Poecilia latipinna, darters, sunfish, etc. Charles
@maniyan_wanagi2 жыл бұрын
@@goliadfarms7029 I'll have to take my net and poke around up here come springtime - I hadn't heard of Darters here, nor Latipinna - so far from the coast! (Fort Worth). I'll be really happy to have just a few of those Beautiful Mollies of yours come summer, for sure! Thank you!

Charles - These are gorgeous. I *really* like the black fringe on the fins myself - it's a great color contrast to the orange and that lovely freckling. @goliadfarms70292 жыл бұрын
You will really like a related strain, the Goldwag Sailfin Molly. It has, when meeting my standards, solid black fins on a good body. We'll video that strain in the next couple of months. Charles
@Mdc77482 жыл бұрын
The blog was interesting and definitely provided some avenues for study. The obvious one , though not necessarily correct is the small water volume versus the large concentration of dead plant matter changed the direct and general hardness to a level that inhibited optimal condition of the fish. Thereby they went into survival mode.The supporting argument for this theory is that Molly populations in ditches and estuaries with high decayed vegetation have a greater influx of a stable water with preferred parameters.
@goliadfarms70292 жыл бұрын
Going into "survival mode" is certainly a possibility, but the worrisome thing is the long-term reduction in fertility. Charles

Charles I have some gold mottled mollies and I’ve recently noticed a gravid female that also has a gonopodium. Is this something you have encountered?
@goliadfarms70292 жыл бұрын
Many older females show a thickening of the anal so that it appears to be a gonopodium. Such fish, however, don't develop functioning gonopodium/ventral fins (the ventral fins and anal fin are too far apart) for the transmission of sperm packets. Usually after developing the thickened anal fin, the females become sterile. I've never heard of one producing sperm. Charles

Can you make a video about Fish TB? What is the prevalence of this disease? Are UV sterilizers a good option?
@goliadfarms70292 жыл бұрын
I'll discuss Mycobacterium marinum in a future video. The disease is endemic these days, and most aquarium fish have been exposed to it and have evolved resistance. It becomes a significant problem when fish populations that have not been previously exposed become infected. I doubt UV is a good option since it seems to be contracted via direct exposure to an infected fish and via feces in the aquarium. Charles
@GodsatGaming2 жыл бұрын
@@goliadfarms7029 I appreciate that! It is known that different species of mycobacterium have been reported to infect zebra fish research facilities other than the well known variant mycobacterium marinum. I presume that all systems have a unique mycobacterium flora unique to that system and fish do indeed acquire resistance. What would you do if you had an outbreak, since your system is recirculating?

Poecilia latipinna, our native molly, survives naturally as far north as North Carolina. There are introduced populations of this species in Montana, but I think that is in a warm spring. Here, they easily survive in outside vats even with ice on the surface. That means the water is no warmer than 39F at the bottom of the vat (water is densest at 39F which is why lakes freeze top down instead of bottom up). Hybrids of P. latipinna and any Poecilia species inherit some of that cold resistance, but that is highly variable. Charles
