My brother who done this in the 1960s and 70s then started his own aquarium shop and went on to be Welsh fish keeper of the year for 24 years running. He is now a millionaire and lives in Spain and is a total workaholic. It all started off for him in the early60s when there was a hot water canal near to us in St. Helens, UK it was a water outlet for polkingyons glass who used to release hot water from making glass, people who were getting rid of fish tanks would throw there tropical fish in there and my brother used to go and catch them, breed them and sell them to the fish shops in and around Liverpool.

While I don't have PTSD, I have a severe depression. It's really hard sometimes to keep up with the tanks, especially since mine are high maintenance - heavily planted, a lot of light, specifically fertilized, etc. But it can just as well feel meditative and rewarding the next day. In any case, sitting in front of a tank, seeing beautiful, healthy fish display crazily bright colors and showcase their natural behavior is better than any movie. The tank never looks the same way twice. There are so many details due to the all-natural setup and the plants, which is why I much prefer it to breeding tanks or what you normally find in an American home. Here, the fish interact with their surroundings, glide through the leaves and stems, hide in the shadows, occupy and defend caves or tiny territories. It's therapeutic.

Same feeling. I'm an IT professional and work can be exhausting most of the time. The hobby gives me peace. I use the Walstad method with low-tech plants and reparium plants like photos. This method is so easy I only do water top-ups, twice a year water change only.

Truly a King of fish. Chill dude who seems to know what he needs to make it through this life and I have a lot of respect for that. Really resonated with him saying the fish help him with his PTSD. I started a tiny (8*3 ft) balcony garden with a focus on local cacti and weird succulents for similar mental health reasons and it's been an immense help with just soothing out all the background noise in my brain. I don't know if it's because I created my own peaceful space I can control, or it's watching them just do their thing and grow or what. I've expanded into growing seeds and bulbs and it's been incredible watching them develop.

Fish keeping, even as a hobby, is like a second job if you have more than a couple of tanks. Between feeding, cleaning & water changes you can spend 2 hours a week on each tank, more if you are breeding, even more if you have sick fish and a hospital tank. We are going to have to get another electrical circuit installed to support all our aquariums and ponds at this stage.

Some might find this crazy. But my boyfriend and I are in the fish hobby. We keep fully planted live tanks and fill them with live beaters that we can sell. Recently we’ve started doing ornamental shrimp who also have live babies. They make about 50 at a time and we can sell them for $60 per 20 shrimp. It’s a fabulous side hustle and it introduces you to an extremely diverse community of hobbyists who do things that would blow your mind! If you’ve never had an aquarium give it some research and a try. It is so rewarding,

I don’t do it for that reason tho I have been completely obsessed with aquariums in general since my mother got me an aquarium at like 4 years old. Just regular gold fish and that grew into guppies and platys. After that was cichlid fish and planted aquariums. I started growing coral at 13 and haven’t stopped ever since. The reef industry has been evolving so much it never gets old! Between the coral strains/ fish/ equipment/ events/ the community and the coral clubs it just always stays very fun and super interesting! I love seeing this!! Keeping fish is so good for our mental health. Plus, there is a great support system around the world of other fishkeepers. Sharing an apartment/house with anyone is risky. It is wonderful to have enough space for our fish without needing someone else's approval. When someone I dated years ago said, "It is either me or the horse", I said, 'There is the door'!! I don't have a horse at the moment, but I do have plenty of aquarium tanks and would say the same thing again regarding fish. I too sleep surrounded by fish tanks. There are many of us who do. I love it that you pray to God. Thanks, Malik, for sharing your video!!! USA/Canada
