Helen has a most genuine personality and always has that little smile + twinkle in her eye, a mark of a great Witt and expectations of opportunities to engage in with that most endearing trait. I adore folks with this trait. It's the trait that always gets my attention in men, "William Powell, the early Actor/Star, comes to mind." ("My Man Godfrey" with Carole Lombard and "the Thin Man" series with Myrna Liu, works from the late 1930's and 1940's) He's my favorite ffrom the "Golden Age of Hollywood" , followed by Tyrone Power and Carey Grant. Each had that special Twinkle in their eye and delicious little Smile. Carole Lombard did, as well. That's the Helen trait that I find so likeable.

I did an excavation right here in the former colonies on one side of the castle (ok, it was more of turning over the soil next to the garage to put in vegetable garden). The artifacts that were found were amazing. Some ancient tools (a Craftsman brand plastic screwdriver handle and the rusty blade of keyhole saw), a Hot Wheels toy car with only one wheel (carbon dated all the way back to 1975) and what appears to be a burial ground for a squad of plastic army soldiers (RIP). Now that's history!

I've found quite a few army men as I've turned over the back lawn to plant veggies. Along with buckets of broken glass, rusty nails and various metal junk. Before our house was built, the neighbor used the land as a dump. For all my trouble, you'd think I'd find at least one indian arrowhead.

It's kind of fun seeing the backstory of a place you live, even if it's all in plastic! 😂 (Love your narration of it BTW) I've lived in quite a few older houses due to renting cheaply (sigh!) & find it fascinating to see how much things like switchboards, plumbing or window construction have changed over just 100 years? You can find plenty of odd stuff if the place has been DIY-ed a lot too. Gotta say, most newer houses are much less interesting architecturally.... but man, they're WAY easier to clean & temp control!! 🙄

I infer from the discussion that the coal mining was at least decades ago and the landscape suggests more likely a century. Coal was the power driving the British Empire and the Industrial Revolution. It was functionally more valuable than gold. Thus, coal was king; very much alive versus old dead ones. Such attitudes are the norm in human society and history. Probably for the first time in human history we have the luxury of taking the time to both look back and preserve what remnants remain. Programs like this, rare as they are, are all the more engaging for it.

There's so much going on here, my ADHD is off the charts. Literally had to watch this episode in two sittings because I was getting so anxious at how much was going on with all the multiple permutations of this castle. When the gold coin showed up I was like "right. Time for an extra adderall dose!"

i love this show, and i've only just discovered it this week. in America, we don't have so many old ruins like this dotted everywhere- it's only in Europe and the Middle East that you can see this.

I learned something from watching this today, and that was what 'wainscotting' is. Its a word/term that has puzzled me since childhood, when I encountered it in a book about various mysterious things. As well as introducing me to such things as the Cottingley fairies and the Flying Dutchman, it also had a section on apparitions, including an anecdote about a strange cylindrical blue- white object that seized hold of a woman whilst she, her husband and an unspecified number of companions were sat at dinner. Naturally the husband leapt to his wife's defense, snatching up a chair and lashing out at the mysterious thing, only to have the chair pass right through and strike the 'wainscotting' behind. For forty odd years, I'd assumed this odd word was simply an old synonym for skirting boards: this taught me that it's a system of full-wall wood panelling, and makes a great deal more sense of that very strange tale!

A schot is a wall-like structure in Dutch, a board perhaps. Divider.

Here in the South of the US, we use a lot of wainscotting. Even the term is normal here. I had a friend from up North that had no idea what I was talking about so it must not be as common as I would have thought.
