I've always had a rather unsatisfactory basic understanding of what goes on in a mine, but to have the physical process fully documented on video, warts and all, has finally given me the 'comfort' of having a fuller understanding. I could almost sense the smells, the dampness, the NOISE, the achy knees, the strained and weary muscles that these guys were experiencing. Even Kasse's pangs of hunger that tell you that it is lunch/dinner time! What a fantastic documentary, Jason! Thank you!

*Hope they use ear plugs under those muffs, one or the other is NOT ENOUGH.* Dad lost all his high notes by his 40's thinking 'he could put up w a little pain' and relied on muffs alone. Air power plus steel banging into steel into rock in closed environment is hell-a-loud. Does not pay to be 'tough' sometimes. (dad wasn't even a miner per se, but underground geologist/engineer/manager who insisted on some time where the steel meets rock)
@johnchism5728Ай бұрын
My dad was a prospector most of his 82 years of life. He was a load prospector and didn't like placer. 59 to 67 he was the jackhammer and explosives engineer for Arizona Highway 88 to widen it. We lived at Government Wells north of Apache Junction. He had copper porphyry with silver and gold behind Government Wells, and the old Palmer Mine on the west face of Superstition Mountain. He discovered rare earth metals near Sugarloaf Mountain and Sycamore Creek west of Highway 84. A big white quartz blowout had no value, but below it he drilled into 4 inch pipe that created the blowout, high graded assayed 22 Troy ounces per ton. They only dug down about 16 feet and high graded it, before backfilling it. What's down there is unknown. The mining camp closed in 1990 and the area withdrawn for mineral entry...made it Wilderness Area. The whole surrounding area is precambrian, hydrothermal impregnated granite, from Sugarloaf Mountain an ancient volcano. The decomposing granite has noble metals between the granite crystals. More osmium and iridium than the other noble metals...by many ounces per ton.

Never ceases to amaze me how conservationists close off any place of significant value to the economic well-being of this nation so they can tag it as "wilderness recreation", and in the process kill thousands of jobs and untold billions contributing to the state and national economy and replace it with hiking and biking and museums oh boy.

So fascinating. I love the play by play of your process. Even cooler to be playing with the rock from the mine. Some of that quartz is SO solid, but a lot of it comes apart with a rock hammer and a little whackin'. Have some cool specimens already, some in a jar of sulfuric acid cleaning up, and a pile ready to feed to the grinder. Gonna be the winter's entertainment, get it to powder, run it thru the Gold Cube a couple times, and then figure out how the hell to get it finished up! So stoked for you guys, looks like the project is worth doing, besides being awesome for us vicarious miners.

I am new to prospecting and geology in general. But have been watching mining videos for probably 6+ months not including the Discovery series... at 4:46 is one of the coolest shots I have seen to describe a "vein" of ore. We hear stories of the "old timers" following the vein and gutting it entirely, and I had pondered... what exactly does it look like when you are in it. This seems to show what that looks like. Thank you for showing this.

I worked for the Bitterroot National Forest for 10 years on a trail crew and I always loved when I got to help out on blasting projects, often it was a big boulder on the trail or a horse or mule that fell down hill off a steep trail, we would do this to the dead animals to help minimize bear encounters for hikers and other horse people. No gold though. ;-)

If that gray sulfide like mineral is a telluride, then your free gold is likely a lot less than what’s locked up in the gold telluride itself. Your assay guy should be able to tell you if there is a telluride present my understanding is that the gold telluride will dissociate when heated high enough leaving the gold behind while cooking off the tellurium which you don’t want to breathe given that it is pretty toxic. Great episode! But people who buy your ore on eBay thinking to process it themselves should be aware of what precautions to take. You are setting a good example in your own practice. Can’t wait to see more.

Have you done iterations into how you would maybe mechanize the moving of your muck? It seems very labor intensive now and it would be awesome to see that labor intensiveness go down. I'm sure you have thought of this but it would be interesting to see if it would be possible at such a small scale. I always look forward to these videos Jason! Keep them coming! This is by far my favorite content you put up!
@Spudz76Ай бұрын
By the time you hassle with complicated machinery (including taking it apart so it fits through the access shafts and up the ladders, and then re-assembling it inside) and the probable failures too, you'd already be done already doing it manually. Plus can't run engines in there with low ventilation, and wiring high amperage power from outside hundreds of feet would be like millions of dollars of copper wire, and dangerous. The jack-leg drills use air and water which can be piped/hosed in reasonably cheap and easy, but there isn't really an air/water pressure powered skid loader or cart besides that it would be dragging and snagging hoses.
@scuss2Ай бұрын
I just typed in to my search: battery powered wheelbarrows. All Jason would have to do is remove the pneumatic tire and rim and find a cast iron wheel to fit on the wheelbarrow axle that would also fit their floor rails. Saw a 48 volt for around 700 bucks. I've seen gas powered ride on wheelbarrows too, to use outdoors, they are also more expensive.

More water pressure thru the drill steels will prevent stuck drill steels. Nice light jack leg and hammer, I am envious. We had to use the old heavy weight jack leg & jack hammer in underground coal mining, and was a pain in the back when I had to haul the heavy jack leg and hammer up a steep mountain for collecting rock chipping and dust from dry drilled 30 foot holes needed for gold and silver assays. In the 1990's the listing of a cub type fish, was found nowhere else in the world but on our lode mining claims around Big Creek, 10 miles south of Austin, Nevada. This stopped all communications between Austin Gold Venture Mine & Mill and our claim block, with the mine and mill site being reclaimed because of the fish's listing on the Endangered Species List
