John Plantain’s career is batshit insane, I’m very glad he finally got covered in a video. Edward England emulated the legend of the Red Sea Man rover successfully taking both Muslim and EIC ships aboard his very own Fancy, Plantain emulated the Red Sea Man prince legend being a successful trader and African king waging wars throughout the island.

A big thank you from a Patreon supporter. I can't express how much I enjoy hearing real pirate history. The thought strikes me that with all the incredible factual stories about the Age of Sail (I think that's more accurate than 'Golden Age of Pirates' since piracy has been around like...forever) why the public has been fed an endless diet of fantasy? I'm trying to finish work on a series of historical novels that try to be based on some semblance of reality. Granted, I found myself hampered by the need for a coherent narrative with compelling characters, complex relationships and, of course, plenty of sex and violence. (I know what sells.) But I tried my best to at least capture the feeling of the period, and what a 'typical' pirate lad might experience. I used mostly names of various pirates, not paying any attention to correct times/places, but to 'honor', so to speak, some of the lesser known names of documented pirates. That shameless plug now ended, your documentaries have been excellent fodder for my second book, whereupon our now-not-so-young hero goes on the Pirate Round, and enters into the business of piracy in the 1690's. I think the interplay of international politics, economics, evolving technology, religion, etc. creates such a fertile field for the honest historical novelist that perhaps one day these amazing persons, representing every variant of the human species, can be more widely known beyond the world of that Spawn of the Devil, Walter Disney.

I'm done making media reviews, the AC4 one performed poorly and the recent long-form historical content performs really well. Nor are the media reviews especially fun to make since it's just deconstructing someone else's creative work instead of producing something new. They also attract an audience uninterested in the regular content, which is what I want to produce

I get not believing in piratopia, by why assume that they'd build harram fortresses? It seems like you've gone from one extreme to the other. Especially when the locals would take to western language and customs instead of treating them as weird rapists living in the woods. It seems way more likely that they'd integrate into the local culture after doing their bit as slaves.
@GoldandGunpowder
@GoldandGunpowder 2 ай бұрын
the locals weren't one unit, Madagascar consists of several peoples with different entities within them, the fortresses were necessary to defend against rival tribes, or simply other pirates(see the Plantain story) or even colonial forces, this will become apparent in next month's biography
