When I was like 12 I wanted a Gameboy and my dad got me a second hand Sega Nomad because my brothers already had a Sega Genesis (Mega Drive) and a bunch of games for it. I had never even heard of the Nomad, but was so happy I got it. This and Top Gear 2 we're definitely the two games I played most. Mortal Kombat and Mega Bomberman, the two games I played most on Genesis, just didn't feel right on the Nomad, also my brothers wouldn't let me have Mortal Kombat for very long anyway, they'd also get pissed off about me taking Top Gear 2. Awesome! Thanks for making this video! I loved the research and details. Jokes were funny too. IBM version was the one I grew up playing 1,000s of times. There were "secret spots" that you could knock enemies through that would count as an edge. Not sure if they were glitches or secrets. Loved it either way. It would give you options for graphics level, and I would actually turn it down to 16 colors (yes not bit lol) as it would run much faster and more stable too.

You didn't mention the BEAUTIFUL, fun re-make from 5+ years ago... it maintained all of the fun elements of the original, while updating the graphics to today's standards. I don't know why they never completed it (they only did level 1, if memory serves). It had serious potential, & we still have the download somewhere.

Agree with many of the narrator's opinions, but Golden Axe 3 has always been my favourite GA game, and my favourite sidescrolling beat'em up game, beside Streets of Rage 2/3. I played GA3 for years upon end, perfecting the skills and moves (or trying to). Its graphics could possibly have been more varied, yes, but the gameplay and the variation is great! And remember, GA3 was released on the old Sega Genesis/Mega Drive system, with all its limitations!

Brings back memories but I thought Revenge of Death Adder was the third. I remember playing the first at the local 7-11 and revenge of Death adder at either the arcade or local comic shop. I used to play with my best friend all the time. He was a master of it Showed me some very useful tricks that could get you through the game on one quarter. I am actually surprised to hear that not many people played it because in my parts it was pretty popular with crowds of teens after school waiting their turns to get in on the adventure.

Also, I do not care what the creator of the franchise said, and/or what you, or anyone else has to say, @Top Hat Gaming Man, but I actually like all of the games that are in the Golden Axe franchise and, let us be honest here, one of the main sources of inspiration, namely, the Conan franchise, ALSO just so happened to have books and adaptations of varying quality, so if Conan can weather through all of that and still become a master of the fantasy genre (he even became a mainstream Marvel Comics character), then Golden Axe can also make sense as well. Moreover, here is the ACTUAL time line of events that had happened in the game. Golden Axe: Legends - though it is only a fan game, at least it offers an origin story for Death Adder. One can also argue that it also offers an origin story for Death Bringer as well. Golden Axe: Beast Rider - this is part of the Golden Axe saga that deals with the origins of Tyris Flare. Granted, the designs, unfairly difficult game play, like even more so than the original games, and dialogue are not the best, but they also do not contradict the lore of the main Golden Axe game. Golden Axe: Warrior - this is the part of the Golden Axe saga that deals with the origins of Axe Battler. Honestly, Golden Axe: Beast Rider could have taken more inspiration from this game and then adapted it into that game. Ax Battler: A Legend of Golden Axe - basically, this game is more of a backstory to Axe Battler (though I wish that someone had learned how to spell his name right in the game), which builds up on what came from Golden Axe Warrior. Golden Axe I - I am going to combine the arcade and home ports of the game, specifically, the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive port of the game, into one overarching story. I am also going to make it so that Death Bringer kind of made Death Adder from the hero that he was in Golden Axe: Legends, into a fallen villain in a combination of a Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader sort of way and a Mathias Cronquist/Lord Dracula sort of way by the time of the events of the two previous games, namely, Golden Axe: Warrior and Golden Axe: Beast Rider, had rolled around. Also, the actions that had happened in those two previous games led to the deaths of the family members that had previously set out to destroy Death Adder, thus, while the events of Golden Axe: Warrior and Golden Axe: Beast Rider were happening, the other people that had been mentioned to have died prior to the events of this game had happened, and Golden Axe I is the result of their deaths. Golden Axe II - I am going to make it so that Lord Guld was both a former general of Death Adder and Death Bringer and that he would be using the events of this game in order to bring about the deaths of Tyris Flare and Axe Battler, or so he thought, anyway, which also help lead to the events of Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder. Basically, Lord Guld did what he did so that he could a. have his revenge on the deaths of his masters, b. have his revenge on the deaths of his soldiers that were under his command, c. use the Golden Axe to resurrect Death Adder, and d. take out Axe Battler and Tyris Flare. However, what a lot of people did not know was that Tyris Flare and Axe Battler had actually fallen in love, and then became married, then had become the king and queen of the Kingdom of Yuria, between the events of the first game and this game, thus Gillius Thunderhead had actually sacrificed himself, and had also become severely injured, in order to save the lives of his friends, and their mutual decision to cease becoming warriors, as the Kingdom of Yuria needed leaders with which to rule their country, and Tyris was also pregnant after the events of this game, which leads to the events of the next three games. Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder - though Lord Guld wanted to resurrect both Death Adder and Death Bringer, his spells, incantations, and plans to do so to both people were interrupted by the actions of Tyris Flare, Axe Battler, and Gillius Thunderhead. However, since Gillius Thunderhead was getting old, he knew that his physical body had hit its peak, so it was at this point that he decided that he would devote more of his life to studying dwarven, elfin, human, and other types of magic, as well as raise a new generation of heroes to replace his friends Axe Battler and Tyris Flare, who had since largely retired from fighting, and had also gotten themselves up in years, as well as had children, a home, and the Kingdom of Yuria to all run in their lives, so, it was at this point that Gillius Thunderhead essentially became a hybrid of Yoda from the Star Wars franchise, and the Star Wars Expanded Universe/Alternate Universe version of Luke Skywalker in his post-Return of the Jedi years in this story, as in he was too old to fight, but he also knew that he needed to get new people to take the places of himself, as well as his old friends Tyris and Axe. Meanwhile, the resurrected Death Adder was wreaking havoc in the land, so Gillius had to do something, and quickly, thus he found four new recruits with which to teach them the ways of the hero, Goah Gigantus, a man of few words, yet also having amounts of bravery, courage, endurance, honor, truth, justice, and love that far exceeded the already large body that he had possessed, Dora Equus, an expert with horses and weapons that was cursed by one of the mages of Death Adder for standing up against him, and thus she was cursed to be a Centaur, so as long as her feet touched the ground (hence why she has her normal human form on mounts), Titus Sternblade, the equally brave younger cousin of Axe Battler, who wanted to live up to the legend of his more famous cousin, and Tristan a.k.a., "Little Trix", a.k.a., "Trix", Elfman, a elf farmer that was known for his speed, strength, spell, farming, and inventive skills, which were legendary Gillius decided that these four people were the exact sorts of heroes that the Kingdom of Yuria needed, and especially that, like what had happened to himself, as well as his friends that were named Tyris and Axe, these newcomers also lost family members against Death Adder, so he recruited them to fight for the Kingdom of Yuria in this game. Also, just because Gillius could not fight as much as he once did does not mean that the fight had left him, so he rode on the back of Goah, much like Yoda did to Luke in Star Wars: Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, as he had to not only teach him, but also the other new heroes, on how to fight against Death Adder and his forces. Now, as what happened after the death of Death Adder this time, Sternblade and Dora fell in love and got married, and Dora had her Centaur curse broken, thanks to the discovery of what had triggered the curse in the first place, thus the curse was negated and it also resulted in bringing back her human form permanently, Goah found love with an Amazon woman namely, Amazonia, married, and had children, and Trix found love with a beautiful elfin maiden, then married her and had children with her. (I will continue these things in another post.)

I have been searching for an arcade game called Golden Axe. I ran into it at a bus station outside Wacco Tex, about 2004ish. Four player, top down 3d graphics. It cost $1 to play and you could pay $1 to create a player profile that would save your progress. It had all the characters from this series and was EPIC. I have been trying to find information about it since 2009 and found absolutely nothing. Someone help.

In the arcade I think the story was different than the home version, in the home version death bringer had the golden axe even though it was green but I always though gullius thunderhead had the golden axe since it was the only golden axe in the game, it was very unclear

What I never understood about some of the cover pictures of such games was that the characters could just look different there. Suddenly axe battler had blonde hair on some pictures,w hereas he clearly does not have that in the game.

Reviewers whine so much about the graphics of Golden Axe 3 as if graphics is everything of games. They ignore the improved gameplay, new player characters, the branching path mechanic, the beautiful soundtrack when evaluating the game and comparing it to its predecessors, because, graphics.

@Top Hat Gaming Man, actually, even though those boss enemies that are called Minotaurs are in this game, namely, in Golden Axe II, in reality, they are supposed to be mythological creatures like the Kolas or the Cervitaurs, as their appearance generally denotes a more deer-like appearance than a classical Minotaur appearance.

"Golden Axe Beast Rider" i still have my copy, some sort of buy 2 used games get 1 free deal, guess which one was the free game? got about 70% of the way through, it was a lesson in painful, wasted time. never finished it, and i don't care to. it did not have to be a bad game.. they could have salvaged / fixed it. they simple made the choice, not to.

Always had a strong affection to any Amazoness Warrior lady in a video game. Golden Axe was one of those games I saw as a kid watching others play at the arcades mostly because I was too young to afford any coins myself back in the day, so what I did was wherever there was an arcade machine I would watch other people who come from families more richer than mine and watch them play these Arcade Games. It wasn't until I was older that I was able to afford my own coins but the arcades I used to watch other people play were totally gone by then. Thankfully when SEGA released the Ultimate MegaDrive/Genesis collection in 2008 on both PS3 and XBox360, I could relive those arcade memories within my own room even if most of the games were console ports.
