just wanted to add: (because it seemed you didn't know much about Spiel): it's THE biggest board game convention of the world. 7 halls, mostly 2 halls of just everything miniatures (resin casts, bases, tabletop accecoires) etc etc. Games workshop always have a big presence with painting and tutorials, but their shop there is abyssmal. curious how they will do GD there, there are alot of extra rooms (used for interviews and press releases etc) I can imagine it happens there. I am really excited for GD there, because I live in Europe. (netherlands). I always go to Spiel every year, so this is an auto attend :P

Really enjoyed the discussion from all angles. Totally agree that anyone working on an entry will find a category to fit their work into. A few may game the categories for 'easier wins' but that's a very minor thing. But also the planning for GD doesn't have the professionalism and respect that it deserves for the heritage and audience it gets. The latest guideline pack is a great step forward imho and I'm in favour of the move away from joint submissions which wasn't just a pay to win it was also down to who you knew.

Note on the middle earth question. There are quite a few characters present in the movies and books not yet in the games Most notably though, imo, is the handful of characters mentioned in the rule books but with no model or profile for gameplay. Anarion is mentioned by name in the character rules but no profile or model exists 😂.

While sad there's no UK event (i don't have a passport just now for reasons) if they do hold it at UK model expo etc, it will at least be at a set date, rather than the way GW usually do GD announcements of throwing a dart at a calendar and keeping that info secret till about 2 months before the event. Then resulting in a trip to a UK event ballooing from about £350 to £6-700 due to late booking costs of flight and hotel.

I'm gutted about the rules for the Middle Earth category. I converted a mini using a Warhammer banner piece and now it can't be entered. At least I hadn't started painting it yet!

With respect, I couldn’t disagree more about the sculpting take that Andy had. This is a PAINTING competition. Not a painting and sculpting competition. You either have to not allow any models other than GW or allow commissions. Now you have someone who might be a master sculptor and a master painter potentially edging out someone who is the best painter in the world just because of their sculpt. IMO commissions should be allowed in Open because the entries are breathtaking and we should be trying to keep that creativity alive. And, the other categories should NOT allow self-sculpted models.
