Benjamin Lind, now that Ian Fleming's novels are sliding into public domain, how does that effect future Bond films? Casino Royale is in public domain now, Live and Let Die will be in pd end of the year, Moonraker next year, etc. With the copyright expired, how can EON prevent competitors? Will independent James Bond films challenge EON? What prevents an empowered filmmaker like Christopher Nolan from moving in and taking over ?

This is indeed an interesting topic. However, according to my info, it takes until 2030 for the first Fleming novel to enter public domain. I think that until then, someone will renew copyrights.

It's not possible to renew the copyrights. The language of the 70-year expiration is very clear on this point. @@TheBondBulletin
