My first tune arrived in June 1979 while I was travelling in Africa and I was staying at the legendary Golden Hotel in Cairo. A couple of months earlier in the Sahara oasis of Ghardia in Algeria I had taught myself to make penny whistles using old tin cans and Araldite. This tune is not very spectacular, but I was delighted with it. I did not capture another tune for almost 10 years. I named it to honour both the hotel and Katrin Tartarinoff, a lovely Swiss woman who was staying there and I had fallen in love with. Katrin was on her way to Australia. I hope she is having a happy life.
My travels lasted nearly 2 years during which time I continued to make several whistles. I made the one I am playing on this video in the village of Sagada in the Philippines out of a Milo drink can. It was in Sagada that I met Melody. (The Star Melody).
