Golden Tooling Strap Leather - Product Review
I wanted to try out the Golden color from Chahin's Vegetable Tanned Strap Leather and make a bag with it. Having worked with it on this project I thought i'd share my feelings on the leather and let you decide if it would be good for your projects.

Trying to think of a couple quick "tests" or demos if this becomes a thing. Some durability/stretch/dye/stain etc.

I fell in love with the pecan pull up. If you want to make a weekender that looks like it costs $1100, this is the stuff

ALD has business pricing that goes WAY beyond a 10 or 15 percent. I’m talking $60-80 on a single hide. And, if you’re active duty, Reserve or Veteran they will give you the business pricing. It’s hard for me to afford to shop anywhere else

For something like this I think it would be best as a comparison. How does it compare to other vegtan hides easily accessible to americans? Price, temper, colour, consistency, backside, etc.

Great video would love to see more like it. I am new to the craft and from what I have watched on KZbin information on the leather of what’s being made is really missing. Also we see a lot of reviews on equipment but not on leather like you just did. Thanks for what you do. I agree the color of that leather or bag is gorgeous.

Hey Parker! Thanks for the heads up brother. Have you tried their bridle? Im trying it right now, good stuff so far... Your sides look way looser than what I got from them... weird. Maybe is the strap? who knows...

Why you make bags expecially this one with vegtan? After aging it will look so terrible in my experience and offcourse everyne has it's own taste. But want to know about your decision behind this. And why don't you use chrome tan leather for bags?

You sure you're not from Lehi. Only kidding. It's hard to grade leather when we expect the best for our hard earned cash. Cows aren't perfect and neither are we. When you sell high end products sometimes you have to reach a little bit deeper in your pocket. Blessings on you guys,be safe and stay healthy. As ever just Tom.

haha not sure I get the Lehi joke. But no, i don't expect perfection out of the leather we use. I'm well aware of the general nature of leather in general. I'm only comparing it to the leather we normally use (Wickett and craig) and since the price is about the same, it's worth talking about. And likewise, stay healthy!

@@whitandpark the Lehi statement is to let you know that some of the largest entrepreneurs have come out of Lehi. Meaning you're on the right track. Keep up the good work and if I can get someone to help me figure out my lap top I'll purchase two of your patterns. Again blessings on ya boy.

Shaheen or actually Chahin is a leather I'm familiar with, it is a tannery in Mexico and they use American hides. It had the same issues as you're running into, especially the dryness. The double shoulders I had were very dry and like your piece it also had some loose areas. I made belts out of it and they turned out all right, but I definitely had to use conditioner on it before I sealed it. I don't much like burnishing the flesh side because of its hairy nature. I bought it at Weaver Leather Supply. They offer it with a pasted back too at decent prices.

I've used lots of different veg tan leather over the years and I've found that the "looser" hides or parts of hides are harder to cut and harder to skive in general.

I tell people that everything I make usually has some kind of different texture since every piece of leather comes from a different animal I am not totally new to this but it sure can feel like I am. I seem to buy a lot of leather from Tandy on Black Friday LOL Thanks for all the great information

Use "Leather Balm Atom Wax" on the inside loose sections of leather to increase your yield. I always avoid leather with loose grain but sometimes it happens and Atom wax works surprisingly well.
