Good evening Sir (well, according to German time), what a great piece of music you offered again. Since I missed your virtual concert at Palomar College, this is a very nice compensation. I can't get enough of your music to build me up and help me through these troubled times. Honestly. War is only a few hundred miles away from here, so such lovely distraction comes in just right. The style you are playing, Sir, is it a mixture of uppicking und overhand? And I'll take a guess: It's double C-tuning. Anyway thank you very much again!

Hi Achim, I appreciate your kind words, and I'm glad to hear you are enjoying the songs. For this one I mostly play in a kind of pattern where you brush down and then pick up on your way up. There are parts with straight down picking too. The tuning is G-D-G-D-E, but tuned down low 4 or 5 steps.

Man I got to learn how that up-picking style! I usually play clawhammer and 2-finger thumb lead. I know a few 3-finger Scruggs songs too. I don't don't know where to start with up-picking though...help

I play a lot where I’m strumming down but pick up for the melody notes. That’s mostly what I did in this video. Sometimes it makes the melody pop out a little more.

Awesome! Did you have anyone in particular that that really influenced yours? I really enjoy the unaccompanied singing of Doug and Jack Wallin(golden vanity)

My favorite version is Almeda Riddle's. That's the one that made me want to learn it. I'll have to check out Doug and Jack Wallin's version.

Hey Zac, what's the source of this version? I know this one through Pete Seeger as "The Golden Vanity"

As far as I know the song is hundreds of years old. I’ve heard it sung a bunch of different ways and learned verses from a lot of different versions. One of my favorites is Almeda Riddle’s. Haven’t heard Pete’s.

What's your tuning??
@ZacSokolow2 жыл бұрын
It’s a variation of G tuning, G-D-G-D-E, but tuned down real low. Can’t remember where I first learned that tuning, but it’s a good one.
