A very good performance. Technically, it was noticeably more difficult than both Janet Lynn and Karen Magnusson's programs. I wonder why Gaby did not compete for two more years as she surely would have won the 1972 Olympics.

Gaby probably would've suffered the same fate as Janet Lynn and the rest of the competition -- she would've eventually been buried by Trixie Schuba's monstrous compulsory figures scores in '71 and '72 that Gaby wouldn't have had a prayer for gold at the Olympics.

I don't think so - in fact it might have not changed the sport as quickly as it did. Gaby beat Trixi in figures in 68, but Trixi won figures here and at the 69 worlds. I think Gaby's figures were strong enough to hold her close as she was only a few points behind Trixi here after figures. Had she won in Lyon in 1971 and in Sapporo (and Calgary worlds) in 72, perhaps the audience might not be so flustered since this performance was excellent - not Janet Lynn at her best but still strong all around.

Which means it might have been a blessing Gaby retired early, since I think skating NEEDED the change that the whole Trixi vs Janet mess brought about and with a highly popular well liked European skating superstar who was strong in figures and while not "magical" athletic and all around very good in free skating winning all the big titles of the quad this would have never come about, and it needed to. Gaby retiring allowed the needed huge controversy around Janet and Trixi to happen, and it needed to for the sports well being.

+Doug Metris I don't think she deserved a 6.0. If you compare her program to Janet's, Janet's is better artistically, but she didn't get a 6.0.

I also prefer Karen Magnussen's program artistically. This is good but Karen''s has more transitions, she changes moods and tempos for the music better unlike Gaby who skates fast and very similar for each section music. I would have given her a 6.0 though but not for artistic. I would give her a 6.0 for technical merit. The power of her jumps, her speed over the ice, the number of combination jumps and double axels or harder doubles, and the strength of most of her spins are the best of all the women. Artistic I would give 5.9 max, maybe 5.8.

@@skatefan9495 totally agree with you! Janet deserved a 6.0 for artistic impression. Gaby, while a brilliant athlete, deserved a 5.8. A stretch for a 5.9 but certainly not a 6.0
