GoldenEye 007's first stage Dam, hosts what is likely the oldest speedrunning strategy still used by players today. But it's not the only strategy available, and a faster one has been known about for 20 years. But it was deemed too difficult, and therefore nobody tried. That is.. until now.

There are a couple times when a run truly will never be beaten. But while that might be for very very niche games and runs, its generally when an otherwise ridiculously optimized game has something not bypassable that means there are discrete chunks of time saves possible and the next one is out of the question because of how optimized a game is. Funnily enough Goldeneye and Mario are reasonable examples of games that will inevitably reach unbeatable records, and it's why whenever this sort of thing happens that it is so big. Because saving entire seconds or even entire frame rules gets harder and harder each time. Mario runs reaching the human limit, and then pushing up right against the TAS are a good example of there still being some room, but the execution being the issue. This was an insane record break...and it has now set an even harder bar to beat, quite probably an impossible one. If someone got a 1:12, it would definitely be an impossible one. And it was insane, while having a known faster strategy around. There are plenty of other long standing records that don't have such possibilities known.

Calle = an absolute legend 👍 I have so many amazing memories of playing multiplayer GoldenEye when it came out... how many times we'd scream at the TV because the hitboxes for characters seemed completely scuffed and how quickly a game would degenerate into a button-mashing exercise rather than accurate sniping attempts. So it still blows my mind every time I see these frame-specific pixel-accurate strategies that keep being discovered in speedrunning... and I think that shooting at a tiny button through a window as you're running towards it _without even being able to see it_ just about takes the cake!

man the dedication people have to speedrunning is awe inspiring. the fact people can dedicate so much of their lives and time to just improving their time in one level on a videogame by one second is insane.

congrats though karl - i have watched your videos since you were at about 5k, if im honest i used to hate watch your videos a bit because i found your voice boring and monotonous. you have improved so much since then though man and your videos are no longer a hate watch haha, you have more of a story to tell and the actual content is more engaging. fellow aussie here, dont get too sweaty trying to break your records over this summer its gonna be a scorcher, or if you do just remember to drink plenty of water!

I mean, it is impressive, but awe inspiring? I can think of plenty of things that would inspire more awe than someone spending countless hours doing the same repetitive actions until they get the result they want. In essence that is a good portion of much speed running, repeating the same actions over and over until the luck is finally on your side. It is a task of endurance and patience, it is something most people wont do, but it is not really awe inspiring overall :/

Albert Einstein once said, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.” So yes, speedrunning is essentially insane lol

Every runner whos grined a level or game for weeks, months, maybe even years, to beat just 1 single second definitely understands this reaction 13:08 Even though, at first Carls reaction was cool as ice 🥶🙂 ps.: I don´t if this was intentional or not but interestingly Karl starts talking about Dam 0:52 at 12:52 😃 Karl & Carl: The greatest Dam Agents ever.

Not just patience, this sort of trying and retrying knowing it's possible but failing due to RNG or just choking is such a destroyer of players generally, and runners especially.

Ayy yo! Y'all heard about GoldenEye 007's oldest world record finally getting beaten? Well, I gotta give props to the new record-holder, 'cause that's a heck of an accomplishment! That record was standin' since '97, so anyone who breaks it gotta have serious skills. But, while I'm applaudin' this feat, it's also kinda bittersweet - 'cause no one can ever beat the nostalgic feel of the original GoldenEye. That game is a classic, yo! It's the one that started it all. And, no matter what records are set, it'll always have a special place in our hearts.

Looking at the Elite rankings, he has 16 records in Goldeneye alone. Tied records, although he was the first to set several of them. Dude does not give himself nearly enough credit, even if humility is a nice thing.

One of my favorite things about Karl jobst is that he makes these videos to inform us and share the love towards other gamers. He could easily just talk about himself and his numerous world records and feats but he instead opts to say "look at this person and the amazing thing they did, let's talk about why this person is awesome and deserving of praise" which is always a good feeling. Anytime I see a video like this I'm always happy to know that instead of being greedy time and effort was put into highlighting the greatest moment of others and spreading the love for a hobby. It's one of the best features of this channel for sure.
