@Jabroni Destroyer For anyone who was playing any FPS on PC at the time, Golden Eye was already obsolete and overrated. @Jabroni Destroyer Did you somehow forget the internet was shit back then and people didn’t have it? If you actually wanted to play with friends, which is what most kids with a social life like to do, goldeneye was the only way for most... One system: one tv, one console, and four controllers opposed to how many monitors and PCs? I don’t think I even remember the game for the game itself, I remember it for the dumb fun times I had with my other 12-14 year old friends playing it and eating junk food. It lead to good fun.

@Wallychans LAN parties and Internet cafés were a thing at the time for someone who wanted to play multiplayer FPS and had no connection at home. I still went there despite having Internet and being fully able to play those games at home at the time funnily enough for the human interaction parts, so I am not sure why you felt the need to berate people with the "kids with a social life" remarks. Also Internet was "shit" by today's standards, but that does not mean that you couldn't perfectly play games at the time. Doom, Hexen, Quake, Unreal, Half-life etc were working fine despite being fast and latency-dependent games. @Jabroni Destroyer I didn't mind as much since I found them fun regardless but it definitely hurt my eyes, even as a kid to play N64 games at my friends' place haha. Sony was also the distributor for the James Bond films from 2006 to 2015; crucial dates for the 360 remake and its inclusion in Rare Replay. Rumors stated Microsoft also had to negotiate with Sony. Allegedly all parties at the table were asking for a cut of the sales with Nintendo and Sony asking for the remake to release on their consoles. Rumors circulated at one point stating Microsoft had agreed to pay a fee to EON, MGM, and Sony with the remake only releasing on the 360 and Nintendo selling the N64 version on the Virtual Console. One party backed out and it looks like it was EON. Since then, Phil Spencer has said every time they consider releasing the remake they either can't obtain all the necessary licenses, or they can't reach a financial agreement with the involved parties. It’s still a thing hut it sure as hell ain’t close to a Pokémon killer anymore. It’ll probably keep chugging along for years, at least in Japan. They say they’re localizing the fourth game but that was over a year ago... It would be interesting to see how it went from Level-5’s flagship franchise that actually beat Pokémon in sales (back in gen 6) to where it is today. And the consensus does see, to be what was stated here. Namely that they flooded the market with crap until parents eventually just started to refuse their children’s demands for a new toy because they had just bought them like, 10 that were barely played with before the new ones came out.

I don't think it's dead in its home country. The series just had a release in 2019, and they even re-ran the cross-over event with FFXIV in 2020. With those in mind, it seems like Level-5 is still very on-board with continuing the franchise -- albeit locally rather than world-wide.

I think if there's anyway that a Goldeneye Remake could happen, I think the idea of expanding on the cut idea of having all the past James Bond's together and making this hypothetical remake a celebration of the 007 license and bringing multiple 007 films being adapted for Campaigns for the British Super Spy, so the idea of making a Goldeneye remake as a base/hub for a butt load of content updates both for Single Player and Multiplayer, basically like how Halo Master Chief collection is a hub for all that content, so the idea of having a 007 Film for each Bond to be adapted into a campaign, so the idea of having Goldfinger as one of them, just so they can include Sean Connery Bond as an example, also a reason to throw in baddies from that film like OddJob and Goldfinger for multiplayer.

Don't know if anyone else has mentioned it but you can still play Goldeneye Source if you have any source engine game on steam. It's 99.9% exactly the same gameplay wise but includes all bonds and additional weapon balance changes

@MattMcMuscles3 жыл бұрын
To be fair, when probably decided on that, Quake wasn't out.
@Quurze3 жыл бұрын
@@MattMcMuscles Also to be fair, at the time of the movie's release (1995) that is correct. Quake released in 1996, which means that the developers were in active development of the game and most likely didn't get a chance to play Quake upon its initial release all the way up to the release of GoldenEye N64 in 1997. But that is speculation on my part as I have no way of confirming if that is true or not.

@@MattMcMuscles of course, that's true! I just thought it funny because 1996 and 3D shooter immediately make Quake spring to my mind.

The final product was actually only really in development for 2~3 years. When Tabata stepped in as director and Nomura stepped down to work on KH3 (and eventually the FF7 Remake), Tabata deemed all the work prior as unusable and made a decision to scrap everything and restart. That's why the characters and story only somewhat resemble the original concepts. They tried to loosely abide by pre-existing promotional material to appease the fans who had been following since Versus-13, but decided on bending it all to fit their new, original story. That's the FFXV we ended up getting. As for sources, there's various interviews with all sorts of people who worked on it, but another telling thing is how little leftover content there was from the original development period. Of all the different iterations of character designs we saw, the only two surviving assets from the Nomura-era of development were a model of Noctis' original outfit design, and his dad's original outfit design. For those who might not know, games that go through extended periods of development will usually have a plethora of leftover assets from bygone eras of development.

Hearing stories like this with the question, "How was this still a success with everything seemingly going against it?" just makes me want to hear more about the _Metroid_ _Prime_ (NGC) troubled development history. EDIT: Referring to the N64 Goldeneye, specifically.

The current bond only rule is dumb, as a bond fan it feels incredibly weird to play through moonraker as Craig and face off against Hugo Lonsdale as Drax. Roger Moore was the only actor that could make the ridiculous, over the top movie of moonraker work. Craig as bond usually feels out of place. Multiplayer in that game was really good though, too bad no one ever plays it though.

As someone who spent much of my adolescence playing GE64, I'd love to see EON do the right thing and just let it happen. Yes, I have played the remake myself and I love the way the framerate is nice and consistent for it on the pc (if i could get enough xbox 360 wireless controllers together I'd actually mod an xbox 360 console just for it) but having said that, i hate the idea of having to jump through all these hoops just to play the masterpiece with questionable legality. If say EON said "ok, sure, but we want to make a ton of money off it so $60" I'd be fine with that, and I'd pre-order it quicker than you could say "$60 for a 13 year old remaster of a 25 year old game?" I agree entirely regarding the protect Natalya missions though, I actually put down the controller on the remaster out of frustration the other day after I pushed my way to the end of jungle (I was shooting the guys that run out from the tunnel at the end) as Natalya thought it would be fun to commit suicide by putting her head infront of my AR33 whilst I was shooting at about half a dozen Janus grunts... and to think I used to play jungle on the N64 for fun, FUN! was i insane?
@Caarajack3 жыл бұрын
It’s just sad that companies such as EON Productions treat their franchises like they can only exist with current attachments, even that James Bond has such a legacy that it’s almost criminal to keep re-releasing all the movies every time when a new film gets released but won’t let even a single remastered game entry to come out.
