Sean Bean also played a memorable villain in the 1992 thriller Patriot Games as Sean Miller a IRA hitman who wants to kill Jack Ryan played by Harrison Ford after death of his kid brother during a botched hit. Another good movie where see Sean Beans anger and how much he hates Jack Ryan. Sean Bean was psychotic in the remake of The Hitcher as John Ryder.

This scene is so powerful. And both Sean and Pierce hand in tremendous acting. You can see a deep hurt in Bond, you can tell it's all he can do to stop himself from crying, but what's more, you can also see Alec's eyes get watery as well. They perfectly portrayed the conflicting emotions without overselling anything. Best Bond film.

Alec also hated the British government as they betrayed his family during World War 2 when wanted help and protection from the Russians. "Trust? What a quaint idea." To me, that's one of the most powerful lines I've ever heard a bond villain, much less anyone in particular, say. How many instances in human history have we "trusted" someone or a group of people (agencies, organizations, etc.) who seem to act in good faith and seem capable of delivering a simple or complex task that they said they were entirely capable of doing, and yet were either lying and ended up stabbing us in the back or were too incompetent or inexperienced to truly keep their end up and still pretended they knew what they were doing, both with DISASTROUS results. I really feel being fully trustworthy of something or someone is a fool's errant and we must always be somewhat cynical or skeptical (or both) of said person(s) and be willing to anticipate any possible betrayal or shortcoming on the part of those whom we "trust."

Particularly sad scene. Not because of the nostalgic connection to the movie or N64 game, but it serves as a reminder of that one friend that most of us lost at one point in our lives. The kind where you both had good points but your disagreements got in the way. The funny thing is, 006 is the sympathetic character in this scene. He has every reason to be angry and rebel against the organization that "supported" him. The one that 007 supports with such zeal.

For several years my friend and I have joked about the line ‘...and whilst your parents had the luxury of dying in a climbing accident...’ It’s such a silly line 😂 picturing Bond’s parents dying ‘luxuriously’ by falling off a mountain to their deaths. @ScrubNigel
@ScrubNigel 2 жыл бұрын
I have nothing to back this up with, except for anecdotal evidence, but from what I've gathered mountain climbing was an upper class activity, and older generations speak of mountain climbing as a rich man's dumb idea of putting themselves in danger when the lower class had enough of danger in their every day life. So Alec might be referring to Bond's parents died an aristocrat luxury death. Or perhaps I'm reading far too much into it, and he just thought it was a way more noble way of going instead of the shame his father felt.

I don't think he necessarily had to have been born around WWII. If I recall, they mention that Alec's parents were survivors of the 1945 massacre and later on the father killed himself and his wife, so it's possible that the murder-suicide took place much later, which would explain Alec's age.
@Cableguy15
@Cableguy15 3 жыл бұрын
@@William_Sk Yeah, although I think the real reason for this age discrepancy is because the original plot was going to have Alec be Bond's former mentor; not just his old friend. This movie was meant for Timothy Dalton, and it was supposed to come out in the early 90's. Things got held up and Dalton bowed out, which brought a few changes to the story, but I'm glad they kept the Cossack plot point. One of the most unique pieces of real history ever used in a Bond film.

Favorite scene in the entire Bond phenomenon. This is truly the best moment for 007
@danielwilliamson6180
@danielwilliamson6180 7 жыл бұрын
One of the darkest scenes of the entire series next to Bond finding Delia Leiter dead in License to Kill and Bond's torture scene in Casino Royale. 007 and 006 were like brothers. They were both orphaned. They loved the ladies and they risked their lives for Queen and country. Bond trusted Trevalyan and he really thought he'd had lost a friend and fellow agent when they went on that mission in 1986. Although Bond is a cold man, he feels nothing and has an emotional side. He is deeply hurt by Alec's betrayal and that he went rogue all because of his parent's death at the hands of the British government. Alec's betrayal is no worst when Vesper Lynd betrayed him. Tracy Riggs was killed and when Felix Leither was tortured and left for dead. Bond is a man with limits. The scene was well written and acted by Brosnan and Bean. Good character development. GoldenEye is one of the best 007 movies ever made.

The whole "Stalin hunted my parents until they killed themselves" thing never made much sense to me since Sean Bean was only 35 or so when he did this. Then I found out they had originally wanted Anthony Hopkins or Alan Rickman to play Trevelyan and it made more sense. He was still one of the best Bond villains though.

For those who don't know what James and Alec are talking about, a little history lesson (I'll provide links at the bottom for further reading): Prior to WW2, Russia was in the midst of a bloody civil war. The Bolsheviks on one side (The Red Army), supporters of a free Russia on the other (The White Army). For years after the Russian Revolution in 1917, the Bolsheviks began to annex neighboring countries that were supportive of the communist government. One of these countries was Ukraine. An ethnic group from this country was known as the Cossacks. They were strongly anti-communist and fought a long and bitter fight against the Red Army and Bolshevik government even long after many "peace treaties" were signed. [1] Fast forward to WW2. Stalin is now obviously in power. The Cossacks are still fighting against the Soviets but now their efforts are turning badly in their favor as Stalin is destroying anything in his path thanks to the naive support of the US giving Stalin millions in funds, metals, and ammo supplies so they could fight the Germans. The Cossacks, in an attempt to turn the war around and push back against the Soviets, join up with the Germans to combine their forces. It would ultimately be a futile decision and many who were not recaptured by the Soviets, fled West towards France and Great Britian. Now here is where Alec's story comes in. James notes that Alec's parents were "Lienz Cossacks". Lienz is a city in Austria where the now infamous Yalta confrence [2] took place. The Yalta conference was a meeting between Franklin D. Roosevelt, Winston Chuchill and Joseph Stalin [3]. You have likely seen a pic of these three before in a history book in school somewhere. During the Yalta conference, Stalin pretty much demanded that to avoid war with the Soviet Union, he demanded the repatriation of 45-50,000 Cossacks back to the Soviet Union. They are called Lienz Cossacks [4] because those who fought for the Germans against the Soviet Union that surrendered to the British were brought to Lienz (a British occupied city at the time) and were forcibly repatriated by the Soviet Union from there. It was easily the most shameful and cowardly thing the allies did during the entire stretch of the war. MI6 at the time believed that Alec was too young to understand what was going on which would prove to be a mistake. He was fully aware of what was happening and knew at that moment he would never forgive the British government for what they did to his family. At 6 years old, he plotted revenge against the British government and did so by joining them to learn all their in's and out's, fake his death by making a deal with a Soviet General in Ourumov in order to carry out his plans. Of course we all know that in the end, his plans are foiled. After him came Jonathan Pryce in Tomorrow Never Dies, and he spent his performance as media giant Elliot Carver spouting out stupid journalism cliches in scenery-chewing fashion (STOP THE PRESSES! This is different when it comes to 'best friend betrayal.' Alec and James are shown to be the bestest of friends in the intro and his 'death' weighs heavily on Bond's conscience for years. Then when he finally reveals that he's alive, he reveals that he never truly gave a shit and he also hates him for scarring his face.

Alec was already a criminal in the making at the time of his faked death and over the years grew his organization to be the top criminal organization in Russia. Alec had a hatred for England and blamed the British for his parents deaths after they were betrayed by the British government during the 2nd World War. Alec grew to have a hatred of Bond even though they were close friends and partners.

I think he does care about Bond on some level and that's part of why he's so bitter. The line "oh and by the way I did think of asking you to join my little scheme, but somehow I knew... James Bonds loyalty was always to the mission... never to his friend." Conveys that for me. He sounds hurt, not just like a diabolical villain.

This whole movie’s plot hinges on Bonds chance encounter with Xenia racing him in Southern France, if she decided to go out for a drive say the following day when Bond wasn’t there, Janus wouldn’t have aroused the suspicion of MI6. Yes it’s massively contrived, but they could’ve found a better way of showing MI6 were on to Janus
