Today we take a deep dive into GoldenEye's most luck dependant speedrun. Players spend hundreds of hours grinding this short level, hoping for the numbers to go their way.
Thanks heaps to Henrik Norgren for helping out with some technical details.

To clear up some confusion about probabilities something needs to be understood. The fact that there are 6 possible outcomes does NOT mean that each outcome is equally probable. You cannot just divide 100 by 6 and claim that's the odds of an escape point being chosen. That is not how RNG, or even probability in general works.

There is a quote I heard once: "There is nothing that wastes more time than trying to save time." It kind of fits here. And I don't mean that they're wasting their time on doing speedruns or anything like that, because those people are incredible. I just mean that they spend all this time after having the talents and techniques already mostly down on even the smallest chance that things line up more or less perfectly. And that's some serious dedication!

You're spot on in this video. I've been replaying the game lately, and I've encountered some of the mechanics you mentioned here being wierd. In Frigate, I shot the bridge hostage taker, and then retreated, but when I re-entered the room, the hostage was still standing still, despite there being nobody else in the room. I later found the right guard at a staircase, and after I killed him, THEN the hostage was released. Also, in Control, I was almost to the hacking portion, when I tried to get Natalya to come through the door, I saw her text box, then turned around, but didn't hear a door open. I turn back around, she's standing right behind me. I guess while she was unloaded, she ghost walked through the door to join me.

Someone should grind and see if they CAN get the hostages out in 21 seconds. Ignore the heli throw to ensure you get to the exit in 21 and see if the hostages can get out. If you get perfect hostages with the death animations and a fast alerted guard... from this video, it seems possible.

To give an example of RNG, I have OoT3D and there is an interesting "fix" Grezzo included in that grave digging minigame Karl referenced at the beginning. When players would go to Kakariko Graveyard in OoT on N64 there was a 10% chance Dampé would dig up the heart piece. However there was an oversight Nintendo forgot about that caused the heart piece to not appear, aka being picked up by Dampé. So as a solution in the 3DS version, Grezzo made the heart piece appear infinitely as long as you kept redoing the grave digging minigame (which I did by repeatedly entering and exiting the closest grave). I have a save file with 25 hearts because of this, and there's a speedrun category runners do on valentines day to get all twenty hearts via this method. It's honestly incredible.

I was wondering when ill see another of your videos. I was a speedruner way back in the doom days, seeing how speedruns are optimalized today makes my heart melt. I wish i had the spare time to get into it agin, but youre videos are enough for me. It lets me feel like im on the inside agin,if that makes sense :)

Yes, I for one would love to hear more details about Frigate. Thanks for the video, it was informative and interesting.

Was a really good run. However, my clan back in the day only respected achievements on 00 Agent.

Very well made video. Not the speedrun, I'm talking about the KZbin video. Well Done!
