For sure! It’s about finding the fish, he’s proven that time and time again by catching them with all kinds of random lures like Lego figures, for example. He does also have a newer Hobie though, but this is his original kayak. I think he’s mentioned it’s a Tarpon 120. That combo is about $500+ though, reel is a Diawa Zilion ($400) And rod is $130. But he’s always caught fish, even on his older cheaper setups.

11:45 Not too uncommon that they wrap themselves in the line and the hook is somewhere around the dorsal fin when they make those impressive jumps. Fortunately getting hooked right around the dorsal fin area doesn't affect them much in the long run. I have re-captured pikes that I've hooked like that some time (hours to days) later and they manage well. Well, it's 5 am here, time to go out and catch some morning pikes before the water gets too warm and the pikes looses the apetite!

Why do you use fluorocarbon for a leader and not mono? I thought mono was stretchier but had better abrasion resistance than fluoro.
@ndyakangler6 ай бұрын
There’s plenty of pre made fluoro leaders in the muskie aisle at the sporting goods store but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a mono one. Fluoro is higher density/hardness than mono which I think would make it tougher for teeth to saw all the way through.
@nickk48516 ай бұрын
@@ndyakangler Interesting - I've never targeted muskie but am looking to get more into pike. I swore that several years ago I read that mono was better for abrasion, but I just did some more digging around. To my surprise, there doesn't appear to be a unanimous consensus as to which is better. The few YT videos I watched though did demonstrate that mono beat fluoro - I'll share the link here in case you're interested. I keep the exact locations of most of these spots secret, but it’s just a backwater half oxbow type channel off the main river so there isn’t really any current going through there. You can find similar spots on many rivers though, oxbow channels, around islands, top sides of dams etc are usually slower water. I do usually have to deal with current a bit getting to those spots though. Where I was at here the water is moving pretty quick getting up there now and definitely not for inexperienced paddlers. I was quick getting my kayak loaded up at the start the other day so game and fish didn’t pull up and try to tell me to stay off the river lol.
