Morgan! I have a friend who lost a hand from clearing snow from a snow packed snow blower. It had a bunch of tension built up. It was locked and when he removed enough snow….😢. I am only posting “dreaded advice” because of risk of maiming. Going back to minding my own business now.
@FusRoDarshinaeАй бұрын
Im so glad you mentioned this, i hope Morgan reads it, many people may not realise the potential for injury. Its not dreaded advice its caring about people.

Grandpop kept an area on the edge of his farm that was his "rabbitat" where he would pile brush, etc. to make it a good home for mice and rabbits to feel the coyotes. He felt they were territorial and a resident pack was a good way to keep other packs away. The locals knew where the food was easy and they didn't bother trying to get through the fencing.

Morgan, two things. That was a fox and secondly you mentioned the ashes in the compost. You are absolutely right, ashes equal potash which is the K in fertilizer. So throw all the ashes you want on the bird straw and compost it, it will be great compost.

I remember when I was 15 or 16 sitting on the porch with my grandparents and uncles & listening to them talking about they didn't see many more redtail hawks or black racer snakes. I thought, "Yep. Because you keep killing them every time you see one. Why are you surprised?" A few weeks later, they talked about how there were more mice around. Well, duh. This was back in the late 70s, so attitudes and knowledge has changed. But it's definitely an eco system. Also, that looked like a red fox to me.

All folks who get snow should have a YA'LL O' METER from Ryan Hall Y'all. Stick that meter in the ground or on a table... then take pics as the snow depth rises and send the pics to Ryan. Then Ryan will show pics of the snow measurements from various cities/states during his live Snow Shows and there ain't nothing more fun than to watch the YA'LL O' METER get buried in snow as a storm buries a town. The YA'LL O' METERs are linked on his videos to buy one. Or ten. TMI? You betcha. But Montana doesn't get much snow anymore, so I gotta get my fun where I can, see? 😁😝😍 I love it when one of my favorite channels puts a 'Howdy mention' for another of my favorite channels! Maybe Ryan will give us updates on Gold Shaw Farms' snow levels if Morgan sends him pics!

I always love to see your weather, because living in northern germany, I can expect exactly your weather with about 5-7°C more xD Also for driving the tractor with the plow: You need to drive much slower (like a crawling speed), so that the blower actually clears out enough. Love for all the animals and you as well as your wife ^-^ Also the ash provides some neutralizing and replentishing minerals to the ground, so it is kind of a good refreshener for the manure and straw.

Hey Morgan, I have a set up for water much like yours. Things I do to make my life easier is 1} quick connects. 2} have a high bar to rest the hose on near the trough (I use a 2x4x8 attached to the fence with a pvc guide screwed on to it for the hose to slide on). 3} a rubber hose that you can pull easily up and over the bar to drain the water and then I take the end back up the hill with me to the faucet and just leave it on the ground so if there is any water left it will be flat ice and easily forced out when hooked back up the next day. I NEVER coil a hose in winter. Good luck - I love your ingenuity :)

Bird poop and pee is quite acidic and wood ash is alkaline. So you are neutralizing the acidity, which may be good for certain type of compost (ie where the compost will be used and the acidity will be needed for prospective plants). You can estimate how much poop your birds deposit, figure out the total of acid added to the straw. Then you can then figure out how much ash you need to throw down to get to a specific ph. Then again, just wing it and fix it when it is done mulching.
@nicholaslablanc7895Ай бұрын
Hello from Wisconsin. Here is a nice tip to keep snow from clogging in a snowblower: wax. You can use automotive wax the blades, inside the front, and the shoot for the snow. It really helps, especially with the wet and heavy snow.
@dhawthorne1634Ай бұрын
Ashes contain a lot of Potassium Carbonate (Pot-ash) which acts will make compost and soil more Alkaline. This is great for peppers, potatoes and certain herbs, but most Nightshades and Brassicas (90% of the culinary vegetables humans eat) prefer acidic soils. Coffee grounds can also work to neutralize odors and act as an acidifier. Ashes are a good way to turn reactive hydrangeas pink (use coffee grounds for blue).

It seems my comment with the link for a livestock watering post was deleted. NO, I'm not trying to sell you anything, but every time I see you rigging up hoses all over your property reminds me of this AWESOME livestock watering option used in upper Canada where it's snowing 9-10 months of the year. The piping is all underground, & a post is put in wherever needed with a lever that animals can press to bring water up into the top of the "bowl." Then the water drops back below freezing level before it can freeze. Absolutely INGENIOUS invention that is worth your time & money, ESPECIALLY considering you have a buddy named ALFRED who has an excavator!
@lisaw510Ай бұрын
Forgot to mention, you could start the underground piping right from your spring! How awesome would THAT be?! 😁
