While other cattle farmers use cattle dogs, horses, cattle prods and a team of people to drive their herds, I like how you handle the animals. You put in the time and patience and get a good result as a reward. Your way of working cattle reminds me of the cattle herders in the Alps who look after their herds in the mountains all summer, often alone. They need a lot of patience and experience and they talk to their cattle a lot, too.

Did you see the movie, Temple Grandin? It’s very good. She figured out that cows like to follow each other in a line. Maybe taking them up and down pasture on the other side where they’re against the fence on a more narrow path would work better. Use your ATV; put hay in back, along w/hanging blue buckets; stay in front; and lead them down. I think the way you did it was tricky bc you kept wanting to get behind them, and they had no idea where they were going nor why. But you did get them there so all is good.

0:53 Morgan you should make a gate on the fence that connect your uper and lower pasture so that your cattle will always be in a fenced in area whenever you move them in between the pasture and u will never have to worry of them escaping. And pls don't mind my broken english 😊
@ashg2895Ай бұрын
Do you mean putting a gate between the upper pasture (where the cows are all summer) & the lower pasture where the permaculture orchard is? I don't think Morgan would want his cattle to be herded through the orchard where they could trample young trees. Plus, the terrain isn't great because of the way he's designed his orchard with ditches and mounds. It would make more sense for him to put an actual fence between him and his neighbor.

My neighbor worked with his cattle to be able to handle them with just a bucket. Even his massive brahma bull follows like a puppy. This came in handy when they got out one day while he was at work. I took the RTV over, put a few rocks in a bucket and called them. They followed me into his arena. I dropped the bucket and circled back to close the gate. It also came in handy when he wanted to bring them across the lane into my pasture to rotate and let his pasture rest.

Have you considered having a gate between the upper and lower pastures? It could be in the spot where you had to open it up to let a deer run out. I guess only harm is not having the fence as tense anymore.. :) But definately lowers the risk of moving cattle down, especially with their winter yard being within the lower pasture!
@dhawthorne1634Ай бұрын
Cows will actually play with a large ball if you give it to them, just like they tear apart a bale of hay. Maybe you should try to get a couple of those 4 foot diameter beach balls for them. I would suggest inflating them then wrapping them in a layer of gorilla tape or 3" vinyl tape to prevent horn punctures. Just leave the stem free so you can top them off from time to time.

1 why not make a fence door where you once made an opening for the deer? So you do a slow graze down the fence and water at the end? (Final graze op top will be a smaller size so they are extra eager to all walk in quickly to the new zone that way you can also make a wooden planks barrier as door. (Inside a u frame have planks bird highed, than pallet on top, you can lift one by one be cause only 2 times a year needs to be opened... And only pallet lift if something is wrong and you need a quick access.) 2 have some extra rope/wire so you can lock down segments and even make slous(?) open per part so they come in shifts to sort them. 3 first have the heffers down in temp smaller holding so the others can be curious about them to come and take a sniff? City girl but might give you inspiration.

Maybe you should drop the „fresh grass“ and replace it with „winter hay“ or „down you go“ or something that signals something different than usual. Not sure if they feel tricked. Edit: otoh they seemed quite happy with hay bales, and there still was some green grass there in the lower pasture.
