I grew up in a rural farming area and most of us had gardens and animals for our own use and consumption. As a kid I played with the chickens and cows knowing they would one day be eaten. None of those animals were every mistreated. They lived with grass under their feet and not a worry in the world. I admit that I had many a conversation with them. Being involved and connected to them made me a lot more appreciative for the gift of sustenance they provided for the family.

I too lived on a farm and cared for animals. The 60 to 80 head of cattle we had were my responsibility and part of my family. It was hard to take 20 or so of them to market every Fall but I knew that they fed people and were well cared for by me. I also knew that the influx of calves in the Spring was a yearly miracle and I took great care of these young cows. These animals taught me more about life than any human being I ever met.

A similar thing that baffles me: So many people don't bother to intentionally train their non-dog animals! What a missed opportunity! Chickens are highly trainable. Use the same sound or call every time you feed them, and now you've got chickens who are trained to come when called. Next time one gets out, all you need is some treats and that call. Train your roosters to be chill (and don't breed the aggressive ones, for crying out loud.) Train all your larger animals with positive reinforcement to stand calm when their feet and ears are handled. There's no downside, and the next time one of them is injured or has ear mites or something and needs care. it won't be a nightmare for all involved.

@@rmf1979-j2b If you're a vegan: Humans can't remain healthy without animal protein. No amount of substitutions can give you the right nutrients in the right form with the right balance. Your emotional reaction is a luxury that can't be afforded when hard times arrive... as they always do. The veganism as practiced today requires massive agricultural and chemical processes which convert food into frankenfood. What's more, humans can't digest cellulose for protein -- like herbivores can. The proteins and amino acids in vegan foods are all being artificially substituted by unnatural levels of plant proteins -- which aren't healthy for the human endocrine system in large dosages. Meat isn't an option for humans, it's a necessity. Our much larger brains wouldn't have evolved without it. Unfortunately, that same brain (and a time of overabundance) has evolved some people to identify too closely with their food source. Since most people never really see the slaughtering process, it's a shock to them when they view it after having watched decades of a childhood filled with anthropomorphized animals in movies and TV. The consequence of isolating very young children from the process of how their food gets to their table puts a cognitive boundary in the minds of some. Another complicating factor is that much more land, fertilizer, and other resources go into producing alternative proteins. If everyone went vegan overnight, most of this planet would need to be plowed over to feed them. We'd be replacing meat protein with plant protein and the density of meat protein is umatched. We'd have to exterminate most of the diversity of animal life on the planet so crops can be planted. Again, we can't digest cellulose so most of the plant except the bean would be nothing but compost -- wasted, land, labor, time, energy. Another problem with unnatural veganism is that the artificial means of protein supplementation have tricked some humans into believing that veganism can be naturally sustained. It can't. In the best case (if we could digest cellulose), we'd need to feed constantly all day long. We'd never have had the freedom to do anything but eat. The freedom of time to do more than just animal tasks is what makes us human. There would be no art or literature, no antibiotics, no smart phones, no Da Vinci, Beethoven, and on and on. The very luxuries which are required to sustain humans at current levels on the planet can't exist in a species which must feed constantly. Humans would just be tribes of chimip-like creatures. The planet couldn't sustain as much life in general. And some say, "but nature would be better off." The answer to that is definitively "no" and I can prove it. North America was once filled to the brim with megafauna (large animals) not very long ago. In nearly a flash, most of them were rendered extinct. Evidence is mounting for a large asteroid strike in S. America. All the non-avian dinosaurs were made extinct by another such hit -- 90% of life on Earth was made extinct. Mankind is the first creature Earth has evolved that's is capable of defending Earth from the routine extinction of most of it's life -- and the almost inevitable arrival of some event which can exterminate all life. For once in it's 4 billion year history, Earth now has a steward of the planet. To be sure, we're having growing pains -- but newly evolved species always do. What's fascinating is that in around 100 short years, mankind invented human rights and animal rights. We're extending our protections over more and more domains of those who can't protect themselves. Only greed has impeded this progress. That's among our many problems to solve. Also look at it this way, if humans didn't eat meat, none of those animals would've ever existed at all. Most of the breeds wouldn't exist.

Sarah will come when I call her too. She's a former farm cat (albeit one that lived in the house and came and went as she pleased). It has to do with how you pitch your voice when you call them - similar to the high-pitched "kitty kitty kitty" that some ppl train their cats to respond to. There's a specific pitch and call that we make when we're calling our cats to us. But I've also noticed that Sarah will only do this when she's outdoors, not when she's inside. If she's inside, she'll just ignore me. We don't let Sarah out anymore. We live in the city and close to a park along the creek that serves as a wildlife pass through zone - a way for wild animals to travel through the city without having to be in the city proper. We get deer, raccoons, and occasionally a coyote. There's also a lot of hawks and owls around and turkey vultures are a common sight overhead. After I saw Sarah (who's a fairly small calico) staring down a raccoon one night (well, it was dusk) like she wanted to fight it, I haven't let her outside without me being right next to her. We'll go outside, she'll nom some grass, explore a little with Mommy right next to her and then mean ol' Mommy picks her up and takes her back inside.

It's incredible how some animals can tune in so deeply. I talk to my cat constantly too but he thinks I am just the help lol

There's another benefit of talking to your animals-- well, your cats, anyway. I have always talked to my cats, and they talk back to me (in cat language, of course). But when my older cat became acutely affected by hypothyroidism, that was the one standout symptom and behavioral change that told me something was very wrong -- she stopped talking altogether. I was able to get her to the emergency vet, and after 6 weeks she was stabilized on her meds. And she started talking to me again.

"I'm not a cat person" - Talks the most to his cats. XD I talk to my animals all the time. Always have. I really do think it gives you a better connection and yes, even the birds can understand me to an extent based on tone. They have definitely learned the word "Bath". lol They love bath time and they start getting super excited when I tell them it's time for a bath. So much so that they actually leap out of their enclosure space and fly to the water. lol

Btw I loved the T shirt you had on of Toby you shared about animals grieving. And I agree animals do have feelings and grieve. We experienced it with our pet ducks Jojo and Louis. Louis passed away a few years ago and Jojo cried for him all day and night until we found her a friend.

I really appreciate this perspective. You hear the opposite so much and I agree it goes against your nature. Thank you for demonstrating how you can love your food on so many levels

Dogs can learn actual words, and will get your tone and associate certain words with certain actions. I'm sure that by now, Toby understands the word "love," knows his name, etc. Cats learn to "talk" back and forth with their people, so if you talk to one and they meow back, then you talk and they meow back again, it's something they've learned from you. Generally, cats don't "converse" back and forth that way with one another, unless they've learned it from their people. All this has been studied by animal behaviorists. When I had a cat we talked back and forth a lot. He not only knew his name and came when I called, but a couple of times he reacted exactly correctly to things I said to him, in a way that was pretty amazing. They know us better than we think; at least dogs and cats do.

I think all animal lovers talk to animals to show their affection and it builds a sweet connection. I love the way you talk to your animals . My son loves saying " release the quacken " to our ducks rhe way you say it . Love from Pakistan.

Love your videos. Talking to the animals is a must. They hear your voice and respond to you. So wonderful. Black Cochin is just about my favorite chicken. I have a collie/maremma mix and 2 Anatolian mixed with Great Pyrenees, and mom was a healer mix. I have not trained any of them, per se, but they know my voice and my whistle and come running. I always tell them they are beautiful and how much I love them. When they get a little rough with each other I tell them to calm down, and they do. They are learning the boundaries of our property and starting to patrol at night. My neighbor’s dogs don’t seem to be in my pasture much these days. They were harassing the cows and horses but seems like they don’t come into my pastures much now. I so admire what you are doing raising fowl. They are a handful and they are beautiful.

I like how Morgan is like I'm not a cat person but admits to talking the most to cats and showing himself spending time with them often.

My mother and father grew up on farms. We always named our meat cows. My mother would package the meat with the cows name. It was a great way to grow up. Most days the animals were the ones there to talk to.

The moment you said "treating them with dignity love and respect they deserve..." I cried. Thats how farmers are where I come from and it broke my heart when I found out how meat animals are treated in the USA. Thank you for sharing your wisdom! God bless you soo much!!! I've always talked to my pets and other animals. My parents did too. One cat responded so eloquently with her meows I always wished I knew what she was saying. I am pretty sure my cat Midnight knew when I told my mother over the phone she was getting fat (in her defense she lost her sister). She stopped washing with her tongue sticking out and gave me a dirty look, and she was normally a very affectionate, happy cat.

Agree. Love your vids, just a point- Toby understands you well not just because he’s learnt about you but because he’s a dog. Dogs have evolved with us, in a social way that was and is important for their survival (and that their natural disposition is to want to work with us), far longer than any other animal. They read our expressions and understand our communication better than any other animals do- yep, they understand us better than any ape! It’s amazing. They’re the best 😍
