The reason Toby doesn’t like his new house is because he can’t see or hear anything in there. That’s why he sleeps under the duck house - he can see and hear everything under there while taking a snooze. If you turn his house toward the place where he can see the most open property and open it up - cut the sides out he will sleep in it

I suggested last time he cut holes out and put plexiglass in them for windows. That way he'll still be able to see and it'll still keep the wind out. If it were me, I'd have to build him something a little more insulated. It's going to get down to negative double digits before too long and he'll need it! I have friends that have dogs like Toby. All of their dogs sleep outside. Dogs houses never worked with their dogs. The dogs sleep under the porch, truck, and out by the barn. They can't do their job inside. They rely on smell, sight and hearing to do the job. Toby like being under the coup. It hides his smell from other animals and gives him a good view of his surroundings. Wild predictors like coyote and fox like to roll in stinky stuff to hide their smell. Toby uses the chickens and geese. Tracts outback look like birds. You can see the feather marks in the snow.

What about when they are older? I grew up in farm country, but my father wasn't a farmer. I later did dog rescue for a bit, and dogs live nearly twice as long if they sleep inside than outside. I had Samoyeds, both made it to 16. It's considerable effort to care for them when they get elderly, but it was damned well worth it. At 8, I would retire this dog. It is a Great Pyrenees, I don't know what their life expectancy is - but I had Samoyeds, theirs is 14 with GOOD CARE. Of course, my dogs weren't working dogs, but Samoyeds are traditionally working dogs. They sled and herding dogs - they were traditionally used to herd reindeer. They were also used to keep children warm at night in the Nenet tribe that created the breed 1000's of years ago. Nenets are also known as the Samoyedic people. It's a different viewpoint certainly. My dogs were my buddies, and my job was to protect them and keep them happy and their only job was to enjoy life as much as possible.

Zookeeper here: We have plenty of electrical fences - high voltage and lower as well, according to species - most common issue with grounding, is pieces of wood stuck between null-wires and regular electric wires. Sometimes even in the sneakiest locations. Other crazy thing I have seen - but mind, here we had a ground level wire - a small piece of metal wire was stuck in the solid ground among leaves and it touched the live wire. I was looking for that for 2 hours. Another issue, the wires mix up with the regular fence and they ground. As for the blood marks, can be a bird of prey - nocturnal - caught something, or one of the critters, might catch some food and they dragged it for a time. Though my guess is the first. Also greetings from Hungary, great channel and really inspiring for future work.

Concerning Toby, he's a breed that can really take a lot of cold. He's also been naturally conditioned by being outside so that his is thicker than an indoor dog. Add in that most of the night he's up moving around guarding the place from predators & it's not surprising he doesn't really use it. Plus if he hears you coming he's not going to go into it then. I'd still be worried to but he knows it's there & apparently uses it when it's really needed. Well I wouldn't worry too much. But if you're still worried about it. Set up a camera & see if he uses at night. It's as simple as that. If you're really worried provide him a different space as an alternative warm spot. Maybe even a couple of places.

The company kept on moving to their area of operation, while I and my crew waited for Maintance to show up. they fixed my tank and I used mu needed tracking skills. Now you were checking tracks in the snow but I was tracking track marks in the dirt and mud. I told my driver when to go left and right. Hmm. What we should take note on is that we are not dogs.. and why does the human-dog relationship work tobeginwith? The finnish spitz for example is a "barkpoiter". It barks because the breed was bred to mark game.. The one thing why this is not done by us ourselves is because our ability to smell things sucks... So my question is.. what was in that thing? You can rinse and wash it 100 times and Toby would still pick it up.. Not to mention the soap it self.. spoilers.. Not that natural smell either..
@kristineteall3684 жыл бұрын
@@ismolappalainen6774 that was my thought too. I remember him saying the tanks had some kind of food grade syrup in them and based on Toby's reaction, he didn't like the smell. Toby might not be able to hear anything when he's in that plastic container. If it's making a lot of noise when he moves he might not be certain of his charges. Super easy cold weather dog house is three hay bales in a U shape with a piece of plywood set up as a back angled roof. Just putting a couple hay bales under the duck house to give him a wind block could be enough. I used to live in the Rockies and I saw more hay bail dog houses in the winter than anything else. The best ones have bail floors, walls, and ceiling and a tarp covering (Then you can take it apart in the summer, but they can be very cool in the heat too)

Hello Gold Shaw Farm, if i were u i would get a secondary dog, a working line german shepherd, they are extremely easy to train and they never back down from a fight. I had a Cane Corso for the last couple of years guarding my little farm and i wont lie, he's still a beast. The problem was that he wasnt fast and athletic enough, basically he's a tank and coyotes used to pick fights with him. I trained him to never leave the farm because obviously he's gonna get killed by 20-30 coyotes out there waiting for him. Anyway, i named my shepherd Wik, i bought it from Italy and i love him, he's now 2 years old and since his arrival NOT EVEN ONE chicken went missing. last year i've found remains of coyotes and foxes inside my land, i dont know if they started consuming them but i dont mind as long as they do their job. We also get extreme temperatures, like -30degrees Celsius and i built them a mini home but they would rather sleep in the snow for some reason. Anyway, good luck on your farm, i watched like every video of yours and i really like the progress you've made so far!

It's funny because my chickens sit in the rafters too. I don't even know how they get up there.

Aw, what a cute gift. I'm sure you'll be an expert at animal tracks in no time, Morgan. That was so thoughtful. And, p.s. I think Toby knew you were except for the first second or so, don't forget, aside from excellent hearing, he also has an amazing sense of smell. Cute vid idea though. And, some people on here suggested turning Toby's house so that the opening faces outward to the field might make him more inclined to use it (glad to see he did today), because clearly his job is his first priority :) Thanks for taking us along your perimeter :)

15:27 that's an owl strike, you can see the wings spread out. That's probably the source of the blood. Some small critter got rekt.

It's the acoustics on the dog house. He can't hear what's going on around him.

I just found your channel and have been binge watching. My husband and I have lived on our small farm for 21 years now. Let me tell you we learned a lot from our mistakes. This does not have anything to do with this video, but on another one you mentioned growing black locust trees. Then in another you mentioned raising some cattle. I don't know but I thought black locust was toxic if eaten by any animal. I know I barely stuck myself with a thorn and it was really sore for several days. It also took a long time to heal for such a small spot. Any way I love watching you videos. One other thing. When we fenced our property we added two drive in gates and one walk in gate. For us this was one of the best things we ever did.

Northern Vermont: what you lose with the cold weather, you totally gain back by having all that non-irrigated but still usable land.

Maybe someone already mentioned. You can use those old Haybale’s to make garden rows. without the weeding or D grassing your garden space. It’s a very efficient way of making great gardening area with very little effort if you could roll them out.with success. Best of luck.

Galliger, before the days of Premire, had a light I'd put at the far end if the perimeter fence. If the light was flashing the fence was hot. The blinking light worked best at night.

Happy New Year Friend! You need a mountable wildlife camera to catch what's going on at night. Do you have any large wildlife that would be a threat to Toby, black bear, etc? I love the drone areial photos. They just give me such a peaceful feeling in my soul, old barns, serenity, etc. Changing seasons, maybe a 4 Season framed montage would work. BTW, you have some of the best camera and sound equipment of anyone. Love the squeaky sound of your boots in the snow and even the patter of the goose's feet on their house ramp. Thanks for everything!

Good to see you have a proper tester so you don’t have to use your head anymore. Lol. Sorry for the joke. That really had to hurt. Looks like Toby like to be closer to those he is protecting. He sure is on the ball as soon as there is any sounds out there at night. What a good boy!

I have a Maremma/Great Pyrenees cross as my LGD. I have 2 strands of fence at 15 & 36 inches that are hot. If the cattle decide to stroll, she puts them back. Paid to have 5 strands put up on my first 20 acre pasture. Pulled 3 wires to fence another 90 acres at 15 & 36. I’m a cow/calf operation with pigs & poultry on the side.

my theory on why toby dog docent use his dog hut is because he doesn't have a clear view over the pasture, from where most threats come from. either for sight or sound, he'd rather have a clear view.
