My father was born in Oratino, which is in the Molise region of Italy, right next to Abruzzo. It is a little town on top of a mountain. When I visited in the late 1970's, I remember seeing white dogs herding sheep and goats in the hills, and I know now that they were probably Maremmas.

indeed, in the Abruzzi region sheep herding is still very relevant and the wolves are also present (and protected!).

The frozen grass that the cows and calves eat will also provide them with moisture, too. WOW, winter has arrived in Vermont. Here on Long Island, the temperatures remains in the 50's and 60's during the day. This weekend it'll be in the low 70's and it's November! Pablo is still the king at GSF. He's letting Abby know that he's still number one at GSF.

I love your new hoop coop and enthusiasm about using it this winter! It’s awesome that you have fortified it from those pesky birds chewing it apart last year, and the sturdy wooden wall/door at the opening seems much better than last years system when you had to dig out snow to get in it, and it looks roomier like you could divide it up into sections to separate your different types of birds for a more peaceful setting for each group and much easier to cover with wood chips or straw for your winter composting inside of there too!! You have made great investments and great infrastructure for this winter that looks like it will work perfectly and allow you to leave the farm more for business trips because of the automatic feeders and waterers and a farm sitter would have an easy oversight job. Great 👍 job Morgan!!

"Good morning Molly Murder Mittens." lol Toby Dog is definitely built for winter. We had a Border Collie, Samoyed mix that had a thick, double coat. You really had to work at it to get your fingers through her coat to her skin, even after being groomed. Northern New England winters are challenging, and you are even farther north than we are, so I really admire your skill at farming in the sub-zero temps and the feet of snow. Cheers to that! I'm a gardener who relies on local farmers for the animal protein we use. I love watching your videos. I think Abby will be totally fine with her sensible coat. The Icelandic Sheepdog (my dogs) also have short and long variant. There seems to be very little difference in cold tolerance but a some difference in heat tolerance. There is also quite a difference between the sexes. Females have much shorter coats than the males. The boys look like small bears if they are long haired. That could also explain some of Toby's huge mane. :)

Can't wait to see the cattle go to your new and improved winter yard. Those cattle gates should do the trick and if the bull calves or soon to be steers get roudy and push the panels over you can akways string some electric on the inside of it. Plenty of space for them too. Will be Great spot for them.

For the frozen water problem, you can buy a fairly cheep water heater. My grandpa had a small farm on the neighboring property. (chickens, goats, and a couple pigs and cows). It saved him the stress of worrying for the animals and saved him a lot of time. It's a small thing but it really made a difference.

If you collect your cows manure, just have a wheelbarrow up there with them and scoop it up when you move them, you can bag it and sell it out front of your farm. That was my childhood friend's chore growing up on a farm, but he got to run the manure sales and keep the money he made, and he was able to sell them for $80 a bag a decade ago, and made a few thousand every year.

That mowing gesture Jimi H does with his head when you (try to) pet him, will be quite uncomfortable when his horns gets a little longer! He will start hitting your under-arm (?not sure about the correct term, being Swedish) with them. After a while, when they've grown even longer, it will almost get dangerous. But, by then I guess it's time for him to get processed? I'm not at all aware of the time it takes for those horns to grow.

Take a look at "Cross Timber Bison" ranch video on how he installed water container. Dusty laid underground piping fir water, then took a huge tractor tire and brought the pipe up thru it . He then poured concrete in the center to stabilize the pipe. He sealed where the concrete and tire meet. He then put a glowtation device on it and filled it with water, it also had a heating system. He added several gold fish to keep it clean. The water never froze and he doesn't have to add water it does it, itself. I know this sounds stupid but take a look at his step by step videos on how to do it. It will make sense to you then. Why couldn't you make a small copy for you duck etc.. where the winter water wouldn't freeze.

Most dogs (and cats and rabbits) & other animals that shed don't stop growing til around 2 years old, including filling out muscle and coat changes. Once Abbey is two, perhaps her coat will be a bit thicker. Rabbits for instance don't fully have an "adult coat" til they've been through two moult cycles (spring and winter moults. There's also a coat variance in males and females of several species. Often females have shorter, but denser coats, whereas males have a slightly longer, but less compact coat.

Hi Morgan, Regarding Abby's coat : I wouldn't speculate about that yet. A dog gets its final coat at around 3 years old. Abby still has her puppy coat, and she didn't go through a proper cold winter since she was born. A dog's coat also changes with the seasons. You will see a marked difference in the texture of Abby's coat by the end of the winter. I'm not sure about the length, but it would make sense that it should evolve in time to be similar to Toby's.. I'll give you an excerpt from the breed's standard, where it doesn't say anything about longer or shorter coats. Once a breed is homologated, it means that the characteristics are solid and don't allow for variations. "COAT: Hair: Very well furnished. Hair long, rather harsh to the touch, close to straight horsehair. Flat lying on the body, slight wave is tolerated. The hair forms an important collar around the neck and fringes of limited length on the edge of the hindquarters. But the hair is short on the muzzle, on the skull, the ears and front of the limbs. On the body the length of the hair reaches 8 cm. The undercoat is only abundant in the winter. " This is what you should expect Abby"s coat to look like when she is 3 years old. The breed standard doesn't allow for shorter or fluffier hair. If she doesn't get the proper hair for the breed by the time she is 3, there is something wrong somewhere, but does it really matter ? Just keep in mind that, right now, she is a puppy with puppy hair. Just be patient and don't worry overmuch. Sorry about the long post.

@@micland360 You're a little harsh there. There are always urban myths about almost any breed of dogs and some dishonest breeders spreading false information to cover up their own mistakes. Don't fault Morgan for hearing some of that. Morgan can't aim to be a Maremma breeder with the dogs he has right now, since Abby is spayed. If you are following his channel, you should know that he's a person who investigates an issue thoroughly before he decides to get involved. If you break up all the ice on a tank, eventually it ends up solid ice. Its better to only break a hole big enough for their noses to get through, leaving the rset of the ice as a cover. Each morning remove the ice from the drinking hole and stack it at one end on top of the old ice. This will let it melt back into the trough when there's a thaw.

Morgan, have you thought about some ways to warm the water? Grandp Adler, Adler farms was gifted a water container that keeps warmth in the winter for his chickens, definitely keeps it from icing up. Toby all wet shows just how much hair he has!! Hope Abby has a warm enough coat!! They are so darn cutie patooties!! Abby took off across the pasture, her back legs hopped up like a donkey kick! Rather ironic that the best farm guard dog's colors are white!! Never can stay that way! Nice the cows can stay out, but definitely need a water warmer of some sort, cant wait to see all the feathers in the coop!!🤗

Toby's coat is like the ladies' luxury fur coat, so thick and fluffy... But I think if Abby has the smoother and softer fur, I would prefer that to hug and cuddle. I can't wait to see your hoop coop build. Thanks for including the dogs' grooming day, love how Abby is so affectionate even with the groomer. She's so adorable. 😍

Here's a bit of advice in case you decide to bury your water pipes to prevent freezing. First the trench has to be 90-100cm deep (or about 3 feet), the "standard" 60cm won't do below -30C unless you're insulating the pipes, which is far more expansive than digging a deeper trench. Second, you don't really need a neat square trench to bury a utility water pipe, so don't waste money on renting (or hiring) a specialized trench digger, any general purpose digger equipped with a narrow bucket can do the job just fine. You could buy a suitable attachment for your own tractor, but with the current hydraulic arms setup it's gonna be a bit trickier to get deep enough with that (unless you already have a 3 joint digger arm for it).

My friend had a sheep farm and raised Polish Tetra Sheepdogs. When I first saw Toby I thought he was a Tetra. I didn’t realize there were so many variations.

You could try making or getting a flowing watering trough so it doesnt freeze as easy. Like a fountain.
