Morgan I love the fact that you're using as much of the ""byproduct" from your animals as possible. The feathers and soap may not be huge money earners, but every little bit helps and less of the animal gets wasted. EDIT: trading pork for salsa and beer sounds like an awesome trade to me!!!

Thinking about your reasoning around the Ducks and chickens, they are a huge part of keeping a healthy ecosystem for the other animals on the farm. The ducks are keeping the flea and tick population down which is an added bonus for the other animals, especially Abby and Toby, although Toby did get bit, you can imagine how much more often he would if the ducks weren't around to keep that population down. And of course, the chickens following the cattle keep down bugs and do other activities to help the land. In that way, their profit to the farm isn't tangible in dollars and sense but highly important to the farm's ecosystem, as the bees help with pollination to keep healthy gardens. Maybe another video discussing those aspects of the animals on the farm would be nice to follow up with. :).

A suggestion to help your profit margins: my best muscovy moms have a 99% success rate at hatching out eggs. They are broody super moms and could serve you well in increasing your goose hatching rate. My best muscovy was ready to fight a hawk to defend her babies (she hatched 17 in one clutch).

I think the most important lesson people should take away here is that, if you are a small farmer or homesteading or "farm-steading", is that you absolutely need to be diversified in your operations. You also need to do low profit margin things because they allow you to do (or make it easier) high margin things. Finally, you need to have a healthy mix of long-term product lines as well as short ones to help with cash flow until the long ones kick in.

I've been here since ALMOST the begining. It is incredible seeing how far has it come. Not only that but also my granpa died 3 years ago, and recently my father passed away too. They took care of the family land here in spain. And since my father's farewell I've jumped in to take care of the land. Seeing all the info that you give us for free and how excited you are it only gets me intoxicated in this farming joy. One of the few things I remember from my childhood with love is being in the land taking care of the animals and the crops with my granpa and father. I am now with a full time remote job and organizing the land. Hope I can get in time for february to get some potatoes of the land and getting my first chickens. Thanks for the videos, thanks for the info, and thanks for sharing all the joy and struggle with us. It really inspires me.

It makes sense to stick with the pigs, since you can keep your feed costs so low, which surprised me when you earlier in the year said you weren't planning on continuing the experiment, given not only the direct monetary and meat benefit, but also their use in expanding the land.

Yeah, I called bullshit in my head every time Morgan tried to say the pigs were a one year only experiment. He made such a good business case at the beginning and all the downsides he mentioned were learning curve issues, like the water problems and training them to the wire. But then the clincher was Alison really loving the pigs.

I think he just honestly didn’t enjoy raising them that much, and as a one-man operation farmer, that’s fair. But the overall profit vs cost in effort as well as operational cost, PLUS the benefit involved with Alison really liking them (happy wife happy life 😂) and the work they did clearing land for them… it changed the picture for him. I think he was serious in saying he wasn’t going to do them again, but just seeing the overall picture at the end simply changed his mind.

I think I expected the final figure to be around $16,000 this year as a consequence. I'm pleased to see that you did better than my guess. Good info. Something that hadn't occurred to me on the content side of things is that farm animals can now technically have a 'value' placed on them that is beyond the usual meat or offspring potential. Traditionally, a duck is only ever going to fetch a finite dollar amount bringing it to market but now with social media, that duck can be bringing in money in perpetuity.

I think a smart thing to do would be to classify the ducks and weird chickens as "content animals" and account for them as being a loss lead on your overall business. Like how casinos give free alcohol to gamblers. The ducks bring in viewers to the channel which eventually converts a few of those into buying goose meat.

Streamlining to get away from ducks is probably a good idea. Doing pork most years is also probably a good idea. Adding seasonal turkeys might be a good idea, but it might not. Really, concentrating on fewer higher profit animals or products is going to lead to long term success.

I did not know you were "selling trees." I'd love to hear more about that! Very happy you're planting Chestnut trees. I borrowed a library book that explains how they once covered the Appalachian mountain range before a fungus took out almost all of them. I have wondered if they would grow here in Colorado at 7500'. They are big spreading gorgeous trees if you have the time to wait for them to get big.

I have a couple red oak seedlings that I moved to the east side of the house after they nearly died in just 24 hours on the south side. They just can't deal with the wind and sun, even when well watered. I feel for your Mom. She did well to get them to 4 feet. I thought since you had a chart of P&L categories, I could provide a chart of my favorite episode categories. 1 - Any episode focusing on your dogs and cats. (I'll probably never meet any of them, but I still wish to make friends with them and issue the big scratches and belly rubs.) 2 - Your standard video on chores, your life, the life of your various animals, farm facilities, land discoveries (little things like the marshy area and the capped well), etc. 3 - The recent near zero speaking episodes focusing on cinematography and atmosphere of the day, your activities, and your animals. 4 - My buddy Alfred, a genius in blue jeans. These episodes are fun. The episodes I like the least are: 1 - Serious conflicts. Example: The battle between you, the hunters, their hounds, and their trespassing on your land; the battle between you and Abby's breeder. These things outrage me on your behalf and send my blood pressure into the stratosphere. I realize you have to make these videos in your defense, and I voted up on all of them to have your back, but I'll never watch them again. 2 - Climate Change: I'm well aware of the situation and it's future is looking mighty gloomy, which depresses me. I vote up on all of them to show support because you're right, but I didn't enjoy them. 3 - Financial videos. I feel you don't need to tell me these things, or justify any of it, although I realize many others are probably interested.

Excellent video! I'm not someone who picks over the numbers but I do appreciate the break down for a picture of the value you can get from farming. On the value added side of things, with your new barn it may work out to set up your soap factory in the barn instead of having to sacrifice the kitchen for it (though probably would have to give over a season's profits from the soap for a second set of equipment for it all, so may not be worth it).

@seanboyd2898 - The expense should be relatively minor. All Morgan needs is a propane burner on which to heat and mix the rendered beef/pork fat and a table on which to ladle (pouring makes a big mess; use ladle or measuring cup). Cannot recall whether there is a sink in the barn, but a portable metal table with a sink is easy to find. Both the propane burner and the metal table with sink can be purchased second hand.

Roughly, yes. For the cattle, my estimate would say 35 with current pasture configurations. It could go higher if I had for forest converted to pasture chickens is a more complicated number. For meat birds, it’s virtually infinite. Land is not the constraint. Labor time and available market would be the constraints there.

There's a floating process between your profits and your farming. Don't take the joy and pleasure out of it. Farming is a work-in- progress. Your monies will be a work-in-progress. Don't over do your numbers to preform your farm. Leave it like it is, animals first, then numbers.
