The reason to add that amount of silver is to make an alloy with 25 % of gold. Then we have to boild with nitric acid to change the metallic silver to silver nitrate, the same thing with copper cinc etc. Gold resiste acids so we only have metallic gold, then melt the gold and that’s it, near than 98% of gold with this method, aqua regia is better more than 99.9 of purity (sorry I’m not English speaker)

That's what I used to do is put one crucible on top of the other to cover it until I got lids from the cannon city smelting supply company
