The good old days... I just picked up an 88 ezgo and have to do this exact thing... How convenient that this is the first video I come across with actual good knowledge of the exact same thing I'm about to take on.. cheers Uncle Eric hope all is good

I hope so.Despite all the effort and money I'm putting into this thing, I still can't get it to run right.I've had the carb apart again since the rebuild(total of three times), I cut the muffler apart, cooked it, and welded it back together, and a few different spark plugs.I got a new con rod for my compressor today so I'll have to come back to the golf cart later.

I'm not sure. You'd have to have video going up and down hills, starting up as well as the cart sitting and idling for a few minutes after you start it up. One way you can tell if it's valve seals would be if it smokes when you start it but it clears up after running some. Another indication of valve seals is when you come off of a hill coasting for a while and it'll smoke for a bit after you get on the gas again. If it's rings it will smoke pretty much all the time.

I also remember it could be that your crankcase isn't venting properly. This would probably be a pretty cheap repair but a video isn't really going to tell me much about what it could be. Your best bet is to take it into a shop and be prepared to shell out some cash. Valve seals or rings are going to be expensive. Crank venting might not be so bad but they're still going to rack you for labor. You can get a video if you like and I'll take a look but chances are your engine is going to need work.

@@heliarche I enjoyed your video, and several others of this series on the golf cart... But of the past 3 to 4 years, and about 60 to 80 golf carts I have worked on, which include full engine rebuilds with great success, I am really struggling with this dinky .244 Robin engine that runs forwards and backward, 2 stroke unit.. please note, I am actually having allot of fun trying to figure it out as to why it runs powerfully in reverse but struggles in forwards. Or at least on load.. like it is lacking in torque to work the CVT clutches, which are brand new also.. I just never seen this type of issue like this, where timing light shows dead nuts perfect on the shroud alignment mark. ... I am about to pull the exhaust off to see if the pistons port is on the correct side, as I only check the gasket for the head cap, and witnessed the top of the piston being shinny brand new, which is strange for a two stroke... Now leading me to believe it is a new rebuild by somebody else, and the piston is installed backwards? I don't know, will in about 30 minutes though...

@@drubradley8821 I don't know why it would matter, but I heard of a piston being installed backwards. The guy said it would run like "Jack the bear" in reverse but wouldn't run for a damn going forward. If that were an old piston you'd think it'd be covered in carbon by now.

Piston rings would pretty much make it smoke all the time. I'm not saying it isn't your rings, but chances are it's not. All the same keep a good eye on your oil every time you go out. If it isn't using much oil then who cares what it is. Just keep your oil up as long as it runs fine.

If it's a four stroke(straight gas no mixing), it could be your valve seals. If it's a two stroke(gas in one tank, oil in another), your mixing pump is taking a crap.

Yes, you'll take one of your compression rings and put it down in the bore of the cylinder. The same way it sits on the piston but the piston won't be there. Make sure it's good and level all the way around. Then there will be a gap in the end of the ring. You measure that gap with a feeler gauge. I hope this makes sense...

You would be better off to install the piston partially into the bore then install the rod on the piston

I just got a 3 wheel ezgo with this engine. Only bad thing is it's seized. I'll be pulling it out and doing a tear down on it soon.
