Tell me you're a hack without telling me you're a hack. Look at the top of the stud. It has a flat profile for installation. Put a wrench on your nut and a metric adjustable on the flat. They don't need to be crazy tight.
That's really nifty idea. The home made forge is working as it should. The mouse tail piece you ended up with is very cool. The camera batteries are usually the fault of the camera freezing. I find that I have to take the battery out and then restart the camera many times during filming. GoPro shouldn't release cameras that do that without knocking the price down. This video didn't show up until today. Again, really good idea to be able to forge things at home with simple tools. The anvil is a great possession to have as well. Take care

Cheaper and cheaper built but we pay more and more. It puts money into the manufacturer as well as confounds a guy trying to keep his old stuff going and so adds pressure to go to the dealer and finance new stuff. Scavenge the junkyards for original factory if you still can. Yes, even shock absorbers, tie rod ends, ball joints. So long as you can check parts out and know they're good, go with factory. Otherwise check and double check before you even leave the store and assume half the life of an OEM unit.

Still adding the odd thing to a box that will go out next week---just hard to pick certain items considering the weight of everything to ship. A while back I put together a "tractor" using a Cub 3 speed 2 range rear some tube steel, and some other junk. I had a Briggs 23-D on it in the past and it always gave me grief so I just stopped running it and it sat for years. I put the Robin engine on that tractor and it works great. Very light in the front end, definitely needs weights but generally choke, one pull and it's going. I think it's only 5 or 6 HP but it's geared low enough that it doesn't struggle.

There is nothing like the sound of a flathead V8. My great uncle Arthur had a 51 Ford Victoria that he he owned a gas station and used to drive it to work every morning and I remember hearing it and I was at my great grandparents. He lived next door and he would go by the house in the morning and again at night and of all the cars that went by. I always knew that one it had a special sound this was in the late '60s early '70s and they weren't that many flatheads on the road anymore
@heliarche3 ай бұрын
Now and then, my Father would talk about the sound. Nothing like the sound of a Flathead V-8. He passed on 12 years back. A few years ago I figured I ought to get myself a flathead. Somehow I got lucky and got myself a decent block on the first try. The machinist gave it the whole nine yards. By the time he was done it was a new block except it it's now bored .080. Chuck Exton in Canadensis PA. Exton Automotive. About $2500 and it took him around 4 months to do it. Chuck is a real straight up guy too. No BS. He has all the old gear and knows how to use it. Might be another $2-$3K in parts. I stopped counting after a while. I learned a lot putting it together. It's odd compared to engines that I'm familiar with but once I learned things it was really nice and even relaxing to work on it. When I finally got to this point, the first time I heard it run, that was the first time I ever heard one in person. My Father and all those other Old Timers that talked about the sound were 100% correct. It's really something special. I don't know how to describe it. Most people would probably just think it's another engine but to me it's some kind of heavy and raw sound. That's the best way I could try to word it. It's truly special. I found myself a transmission and a bunch of other old stuff and later built a vehicle out of scrap and other nonsense just so I could drive it.

It has sodium silicate in it which scared the heck out of me so I called them and talked with a guy. I was worried that it would stay liquid long enough to get to the oil pan and then turn to glass and do something horrible. The guy on the phone said I really have to have a gusher for that to be an issue so I went ahead and dumped it in and did as per instructions. I'm still going to watch the oil carefully but at least I have a little piece of mind. Same for me. Still playing bloody knuckles with vehicles and other nonsense. Getting ready for winter. I just helped a Neighbor install a plow rig on a 2004 Ford Excursion. We got the thing installed and working. He lifted the plow and then we found that the front springs were beat. Pick out the hammer heads and the huge chunks and add water and the stuff worked out OK for what I needed. So much nicer than the hoe and wheel barrow! After that it has a slight shudder at higher RPM and under load so depending on what the valve adjustment does I may or may not be putting different main jets in the carb. After that, just bomb it around on the mountain here. There wasn't really much thought that went into this besides that I wanted to drive my Flathead! Carburetors can be a pain! They are simple enough in principle, but one little bit of dirt in a jet and you can chase a bad idle (or other performance issues) all over the map. The ether and propane idea is one I've used too. I have a piece of vacuum hose on a 1 pound propane bottle and I search all over the engine with propane for a change of revs, but you've already done this. I wonder is some other type of carburetor would work on this? Perhaps just some sort of modification to the base plate and you can try another one on there. Maybe run an ad looking for donor carbs and see what bites. You never know what kind of treasure is just collecting dust in some old timer's garage. Heading EAST again soon. Maybe some more sugar pies coming your way later in the year.

I can usually work them out and often with no parts or maybe just making gaskets. This Holley was wrecked. I did just what you said here. I made an adapter plate so I could bolt on a known good Stromberg WW carb. It has the same CFM rating so I figured that's all that matters. It took me about 10 hours to make the plate and most of that was laying out the holes because my math skills are garbage. I have workarounds for that but it takes a lot longer. Great work...a lot of comments on here---I can't improve on the advice already given. Carburetors are really fussy! A little junk in a jet and the whole thing runs like sh*T. A small vacuum leak and they'll make the engine lope and lack power. The oil bath restiction may be it. Like the guy suggested, try restricting the intake at the top to simulate the restriction that would normally be created by air being pulled through the oil bath, and you may have it. Nothing like tearing the carb down again and going through everything with a tiny pin or wire to clean it out. Install a fuel filter right at the carb inlet and try premium gas. If all this fails, Fire the engine up and head the rig for the nearest cliff and put a rock on the gas pedal, them slam it in gear with a stick through the window. Many of my vehicles have smartened up when I prepared them for the cliff test! LOL
@heliarche6 ай бұрын
I bought this carb dirt cheap on E-bay as "parts or rebuild". I figured it would at least allow me to run the engine. It's had a rough life though. It has three stripped out holes and I had to jam copper wire down the holes to get the screws to bite and hold it together. I made gaskets for it and the rest of the internals were "serviceable" for what I needed. The other day I was running it and found the smoking gun. I had the oil bath removed and saw an intermittent trickle of fuel coming from the bowl vent. I know somehow that the needle isn't shutting off be it float, needle, or seat. I have a known good Stromberg 2 barrel with a similar CFM that I'm going to adapt. This tired old Holley 94 has done it's job and then some. That would be something if you went for the cliff, sent it on the way and about 20 feet from you it finally started acting properly!

it's not necessarily control, the corporations sure, they want to ensure their future profits, legally a corporation is like a person, a "legal person", and people want to ensure their survival... that's understandable... government has for mandate, by the people who form it, want it, to control certain things, and you live in the woods, in MN, there's 3M people outside my doorstep here downtown, most people don't want to think for themselves, they don't want to fix their cars, they don't even want to own a car, i'll leave alone what they want, that's their business, and it doesn't concern me, but essentially the government has to cater to the mass, and there's a bit of corruption in there, or a lot, depending where you are, officials taking money to let corporations have more of their way than they should, but most people don't see a problem with their lives, it's a stark minority, you, me, very minority... i think what you, and i, i guess, but i don't care what they do, i just want to be left alone, what you're experiencing is simply to be part of a minority where most things aren't made with you in mind... those people are fully conscious of what's going on around them, the system they're in, how it works, the stakes, the fragile, uncertain future it has... most Americans are happy of the armed forces we have, i'm in Canada, but i'm not from here, hoping to escape asap, but those people like the army not to defend their houses, and businesses, but to know that tomorrow they'll be able to dream of taking a loan on a new car... it's not a lie, it really is their dream, that system is what they built for themselves, we're just different... we think different, we feel different... we are different... they might complain, they love to take things out of proportions, and be the victims of their own lives, rather than the hero that takes charge of it, you're fine in the woods, not bothering anyone... they love attention! That was long, but you make some good points. It's funny because the guy in the blue truck is absolutely a glutton for attention. On the other hand, there are a lot of things that those people do that I am not willing to learn such as loans and mortgages and being complacent. You are correct. They built this system. They allowed and encouraged this to happen and now they don't have to think or take responsibility. I guess this video would be for someone living that type of life and they are discontent with it but don't see a way out. This is the way out. Buy old shit and learn to work on it. It can be very stressful because if I don't know I don't have any of my Mentors left to turn to. I have the knowledge they gave me and it serves me well and I have repair manuals. I'm lucky to live where I do. I never lived in a big city and I don't think I'd even be able to breathe. My Father moved out here in the year 2000 from a small town because even that was too restrictive for us. If I could just have fuel cans that worked, good tools and replacement parts, I'd probably be happier. For the most part I'm fine with keeping my head down and just being left alone. I think I made this video for the person who is grinding their life away trying to keep up with payments and is sick of it. I would absolutely teach what I know to other people if they were truly willing to learn but that isn't free. It took me a long time to gain what knowledge I have. credit is the new economy, it's called "deposit currency", there was the gold standard, then there's was fiat money, today it's deposit currency... it's because money is digital, there's no more control over printed money, they count it, but it's an afterthought... so the banks, your bank, my bank, they put a certain amount with the central bank, and then they can loan 10 times that to whoever as a number in their computers, in exchange for realities, collateral, whatnot, insurance that that virtual number equates to something real, but bottom line, the central banks own everything via the consumer banks because the way it works these days is that you put up what you've paid for for more credit to keep going... with inflation, and whatever else, mechanisms to ensure that that scheme keeps going forward... ... meanwhile, all the people retiring today, they don't have enough money for their retirement even though they were promised they would, and whatever investments they put into society, they never see anything back, and by then they're too old, too uncertain of their understanding of things to really do anything about it... it's a horrible, horrible system... something happened to me because of the powers that be, they imagined i would side with them for whatever delusions they may have had, and i hope i get enough out of that to be out of their bs for good... we can meet at the cash register again like it's always been before, and remain polite, and civil, and go our separate ways otherwise, and never bother each other again... hopefully... i have better things to do with my time than those people for sure... wish me luck..! like luck with that, and luck in general, as opposed to someone pulling strings, or organizing things behind my back without my knowledge, or consent... i don't care what they do as long as it doesn't affect me, and i want no part of me in what they do, and i don't mind going away, just up to them to apologize like the decent people they claim to be, and stay out of my way afterwards... hopefully that happens...

no problems running the diesel in the mountain, in the summer, at night, things like that..? mine was turbo, but as soon as i took a little altitude, in some holes, and at night, was definitely a difference... sounds like it runs okay, though, but there's no leaves...

The old IDI NA diesels didn't seem to mind what the weather was. If your glow plugs were in good shape and the engine was set up properly they'd run fine in the cold. I've never noticed anything different in the summer either. The only time weather was ever a factor was when it was BRUTALLY cold to where the fuel would gel up and then you're just not going anywhere. I had one turbo IDI diesel and it was pretty much the same. The TDI, I really have no idea how they act in different temps. I'm in the middle of an engine swap on this one. It's only getting 34 MPG, lots of white smoke on startup, and running really hot. I'm certain the previous owner did some things he shouldn't have done with both the injection pump and when he put on the cylinder head. I have the engines out of this car and the parts car and the engine from the parts car is ready to go. I just have to wait for new axle flange seals for the transmission and then I can start putting it back together. The engine from the parts car isn't exactly proven by driving it for a good amount of time but I did tear it down and it's in good shape. It also behaves much better than the one from the driver so I'm hopeful.

The starter snaps back really nice considering how old it is. It was that carb. It was a wreck. I went over and over it and was driving myself insane with it. I adapted a carb in good working order to this engine. As far as the rest of the vehicle, it's pretty much done besides some details maybe. The only reason I built it was so I could drive this engine. It's never going to see asphalt roads.

The carb was full of junk when I got it but it cleaned up OK. I've been over it twice since then and the last time I boiled it in Lysol, blew it out, back in the pot, rinse and repeat ad nauseum. Short of an ultrasonic cleaner, that's as good as you can get. I'm not 100% on this carb. Some of the threads are stripped so I had to jam copper wire in the holes so the screws could get a good bite. It's come around more than in the last video but it's not where I want it. If this is the best I can get for now I can live with it.

Sounds nice. If you're having to choke it each time and having idle probs, maybe check for vacuum leak . I heard you can use raw propane around the carb base and listen for rpm change. And the spark click noise is probably coming up that tach lead near the plastic body camera.
@heliarche6 ай бұрын
It's a lot better than in my last video. The last one sounded for all the world like some kind of cam work. If this is the best I can get with what I've got I can live with it for a while. It's not horrible, it's just not correct. I've puffed around the carb and the intake with ether. Same principal. If you're pulling air it'll suck in the ether and you'll hear the RPM change. It's sealed up tight. I'm still going to follow up on that clicking. If it's just the tach lead and that's normal, at least I can eliminate it but it sounds irregular so I want to check it out.

If you bottom out the idle mixture screw(s) and it still runs then its pulling fuel from another circuit or an internal leak. If you back the idle speed screw out does it die? It should, and if it doesn't then you have a fuel leak AND an air leak. Assuming it does die then turn the idle speed screw just enough to make it idle (1-2 turns). You may even need more base timing to get it to idle nice with minimal idle speed screw opening. Re-check the idle mixture screws with the idle speed screw as far in as it can be to still run to see if they affect the idle. If they do, then the throttle blade was too far open, likely needed from not enough timing, and it was pulling fuel from the transition circuit. If they still do nothing the problem is an internal leak in the carb. Good luck.
@heliarche6 ай бұрын
I'm probably going to have to read this a few more times but I appreciate the help. I can bottom the idle mixture screws out and yea it keeps running. They don't seem to matter. I can bottom them out or turn them out to where they almost fall out and it makes no difference. I bought this carb as "parts only" cleaned it up and hey it runs but I've never had it idling properly. If I back out the idle speed screw it does die. I also puffed around the intake with ether and no change in idle so I'm fairly sure there's no vacuum leak. I've backed the idle speed down as far as I possibly can to where it's just barely shitting and farting along at idle and the mixture screws make no difference. I think I'll have to pull the distributor to get more timing. The advance unit only let's me barely advance it. Here's one thing though, the vacuum advance is shot. I have the port on the carb plugged so there's no vacuum leak. That's likely to throw me off isn't it? I just got it running with whatever garbage I could afford at the time.
@andysteele40566 ай бұрын
@@heliarche Look down the carb as is running to see if there is dripping from the booster. Might have the float level too high or a needle and seat issue that is letting extra fuel in somewhere.

@andysteele40566 ай бұрын

@@andysteele4056 It doesn't seem to be idling rich. You smell exhaust but it's not obnoxious. Some engines use manifold vacuum to advance the timing at idle. You stated that you disconnected yours because it doesn’t work right. I would try advancing your initial timing a bit to see if it helps the idle.
@heliarche6 ай бұрын
Yea. The diaphragm in the vacuum advance is rotted away. I want to replace it. Just not sure where to get GOOD parts and exactly what I need. I could give it a little advance and see what happens to the idle. This one uses ported/modulated vacuum on the advance but I still can't imagine the advance it's doing nothing at idle.

If the ignition timing is too low it will cause one to cut up like that at idle. Seems as though the throttle response was a bit slow and that may be another indication the ignition timing is low. I'd use a little carb spray to check for vacuum leaks. Something that old could have a worn throttle shaft. That will show up when you restrict the air horn of the carburetor and the idle speed increases. These old engines are a blast to work on but a guy can sure open up a can of worms.

I went around it with a can of ether, seems like it's sealed up pretty well. If I get close to the carb I think I can hear a very slight change in idle but it might be pulling ether into the intake.
