I’ve been working on this for a few months. This is one of those tips that can actually change your swing visually as soon as you start doing it. It has dramatically improved my usual flaws - overswinging, elbows bent through impact, and an overly inside out club path. I feel that every golfer can benefit from focusing on this

Just found this and think it is one of the best lessons online I’ve ever seen !!!I took this to the range to confirm ! I am one of those passionate golfers that shoots in the 90s most day. I have shot84 before but can never get that repeated solid strike you might be my new hero’s ! Just because a guy can’t afford a pro to fix my game every week doesn’t mean I don’t practice and love the game ! I will pass this on and help another golfer that wants to play good golf Thank you both !!

Great video Eric & Steve! The drills are great!! My tendency is to let the right elbow fly and cup the left wrist at the top. These drills make the swing more compact without any loss of power and an increase in accuracy. Keep up the great work!!

A brief excerpt from pages 124-125 of Harvey Penick’s Little Red Book references this. Something for which Mickey Wright, Abe Mitchell, and Mary Lena Faulk all advocated; not to mention, Ben Hogan who had the idea illustrated in his book, Five Lessons. Definitely a fundamental swing check, and one that I’ll train for with a small elastic “hip” band.

Eric and Steve, really enjoyed the video! I had a couple of questions, first, would use of an Izzo band replicate having the ball squeeze or is the band too passive versus the active effort required for the ball? Second, would use of the "Hanger" with the ball or band be overkill? Thank you again for the effort to always explain the faults and fixes so succinctly!
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Michael! 1. Yes you could use that as well 2. I would like separate them in practice... Like 3--5 reps band 3-5 reps hanger circuit back and forth for 20-30 reps as close to daily as you can Use video to confirm

Enjoyed this "back to basics". Very important and timely information, well explained. Confused only by the squeeze of hands---seems to me that a lighter grip pressure yields greater clubhead speed, and enhances the whip in transition. Thoughts?
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah the grip/arm pressure is a tough one I wish it was 2+2=4 but I do not believe it is I have seen it worked wildly different from player to player Some players I have seen great strikers feel 10/10 grip pressure....others like they barely hold it.....whos right? I think you need to find what works best for you. I would say generally whatever pressure you START with you want to keep throughout Generally players with poor arm/wrist structure need to feel MORE tension (to change them) vs less kzbin.info/www/bejne/jIKVl4mFrZulm5o

the squeezing is due to rotation of arms (rt-external,left external) to bring elbows together NOT just pulling arms together. ( ie shoulders fixed width, hands together, only arm rotation affects elbow. width?)

I love the drill as a issue of mine is open elbow then over the top pull/hook. One issue I have when keeping pressure on the elbow is I get super tight with the grip and wrist as well (my videos show very little wrist hinge and and at left arm parallel I'm no where near 90 degrees). Any tips with this or do I need to slow down and not get to a full swing until its right?
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 3 жыл бұрын
Would have to see to say for sure Super tight with the grips MAY or MAY NOT be an issue so long as your hinge is too on way down it could be OK if you are less than 90 going back If you dont have enough hinge coming down then I would look at it more kzbin.info/www/bejne/hprGdnp4otqeqqs kzbin.info/www/bejne/qWe2doVnhtx6lZY

Very instructive details. During the down swing, as the right elbow tuck, when club parallels ground, what is the angle between right forearm and right upper arm from the down the line view? Since the video shows your hands very close to knee position. My video shows my hands on the same level as my belt. Thanks

I was taught by GG to have a home plate setup look like hogan with a flying trail elbow with internal shoulder then in transition squat and squeeze the elbow. The flying elbow makes the squeeze easier for me and doesn't cause the shoulder plane to flatten and get the trail elbow stuck to much in front during the backswing. If you look at a throwing motion you don’t set the shoulder in an externally rotated position it goes from internal to external which is the model you see from the longest drivers like Kyle Berkshire. While Sergio is phenomenal I don’t believe most people are capable of squeezing the elbows close together at setup getting the trail shoulder externally rotated and then going more external in transition. this video follows Hogans image of arms tied together even though he setup different. Personally I think this video is harmful and will lead to other backswing problems if it's not done under the careful watch of a pga instructor.

thanks for the message...I agree with parts of this for sure. Frankly the setup and backswing have the most variables...some players do better with more internal trail shoulder going back and more eternal coming down.... but not all. Either side can be disastrous for the right golfer :) The MAIN idea here is no matter what you do at setup and going back the elbows getting closer and trail shoulder external from P4-P5 if the big Key more on that here kzbin.info/www/bejne/mXzdY2Cvo5qFaNE kzbin.info/www/bejne/hXvToap6fNubo7s

Hi Eric. My question is this in reference to elbows closer, arm squeeze. I have had rotator surgery on both shoulders and I don't have much, being a right handed golfer, (external rotation) of my trail arm. So my elbow will chicken wing a little in my back swing. So how do I apply this method under those conditions?
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 3 жыл бұрын
Great Question! then don't worry about the backswing but make sure from about left arm parallel through impact in downswing they get back closer More on that here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mXzdY2Cvo5qFaNE

So am I supposed to have tension in my arms or not? In another video you explained that you can have tight grip pressure, but don't want tension in your arms at setup. How should I think about this while over the ball?
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 3 жыл бұрын
Great questions. I wish it was 2+2 and I could tell you 4 I do not think this is the same for ever player If.....IF.......the person's arm structure is BAD......then I would likely say they need MORE PRESSURE.....not loose goose. If they feel relaxed and arm structure is good then all good.

Good information about the swing differences between swings with the elbows staying squeezed together vs flared apart. Also good points about feel of retaining tension as opposed to things getting loose and sloppy. Having an advert for the hanger inserted part way through the video, interrupting the content, was strange and out of place.
