This is a great video and concept to develop your own swing. I've been working on being more external for a while which really contributes to better ball striking.

Oldish video, but a good exercise to get the feeling is to get a light resistance band and go palm down to palm facing forward for 10-20reps. Can probably Google "external shoulder rotation resistance band". You can also do some reps then hit balls immediately so the feel is still in your mind. This motion, in transition for me, really helped my consistency.

Great food for thought. Thanks! But I don't think you can say for sure if somebody is externally or internally rotated just by looking at the position of his trail arm. You can be both int. or ext. with a "tucked arm" and just the same with a "flying elbow". I would say if you just get to see a picture of the top of the swing it's impossible to say.

Hey-thanks for the message! You can tell if the shoulder is internal or external by the position of the humerus relative to body lines...

i find it helpful to set my right shoulder in external rotation at address so that the point of my elbow pretty much points to my right hip (without simultaneous supination of my forearm which would strengthen my right hand grip) and holding the rotation throughout my swing. It helps to get a flexed elbow back in front of the hip pre impact and maintains wrist hinge

Funny...I said this was a really good video 4 months ago, then for some reason forgot about it and didn't do it. But yesterday at the range I rediscovered this concept...didn't really think about it on the way back, but in transition I moved so I sort of felt a stretch between my right deltoid and right pec which I assume is my version of external shoulder rotation. Anyway, wow, I was hitting the ball great. Might want to revisit because the concept is important but not simple.

I think you really need to deal with each player on an individual basis. What works for one player may not for the next....have to understand how to match the pieces together.

my elbow stays pointed towards the ground but my hands are low and I think I lose power. I seem not to be able to get my hands high (4:15) while keeping my elbow pointed down (8:11). Freeze the frame at 8:11 and that's my back swing. any help?

I have a 13 year old junior golfer. Can you over externally rotate on the back swing? It works for him but his swing can get flat.
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 2 ай бұрын
Hey Philip! You can, yep....of course like anything else you can OVERDO or UNDERDO anything.....so it's possible he's doing it TOO MUCH which would make it flat/laid off.... MAY or MAY NOT be an issue... If you ever want any guidance send swings to www.cogornogolf.com/freetrial so I can analyze his swings and create a custom practice plan for him

Ben Hogan's setup is externally rotated with his elbow pits forward. His backswing is incredibly externally rotated as well as his downswing. His pre-accident setup is more neutral. Maybe he had a revelation that to start with an externally rotated right shoulder which is held in that position will lead to less moving parts.

How much speed/power (percentage-wise) do you think you'd lose if you kept the arm externally rotated on the backswing vs. internal? I'm more of an internal guy but I struggle with shallowing the club on the downswing. I feel like the Tour Striker ball drill will help tremendously with that (less ground to cover for the arm to move from internal to external, right?). Great vid, Eric.
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 5 жыл бұрын
I think you can get more speed if you go more internal...Usually several MPH....BUT if you keep it external and that lowers your dynamic loft and you hit it more solid then it can offset that OR even over take that....
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 5 жыл бұрын
Either way...you can do either going back but you want to get back to external during downswing for sure

Hey great video, you're definitely one of the best at what u do. Important question that I haven't been able to find an answer to regarding this subject. How long do you keep the external rotation in the downswing, you must have to let it go at some point before impact as you straighten your right arm. If you can please provide a little bit of detail of external rotation from transition to post impact. Thank you
@CogornoGolf

Hey! Thanks! The technical answer on paper is that it depends on several other variables (club face angle, swing direction, pelvis rotation, torso rotation, etc) The dumbed down answer would be one the club gets parallel to the ground in the downswing the ER starts to turn slowly to IR and then more and more IR of trail shoulder from there to the finish. hope that helps
@AR-ke8wg
@AR-ke8wg 4 жыл бұрын
@@CogornoGolf yes thats perfect. I've always had a hard time getting to last parallel in the downswing "the slot" and staying on plane. This will help I believe. I will give it a try. Thanks you again.

Another great vid pro! As a golfer recently reached the age of 50, would that rotating on the spot (thinking from the top of the swing) swing philosophy you and GG advocate be a good thing, or will there be some problems when the mobility starts to be an even bigger problem than it already is, like in a few years time...or hopefully more. :-)

Will externally rotating cause the club to be more laid-off at the top and will it cause the club face to be closed at the top with a strong grip?
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 5 жыл бұрын
1. Yes. 2. No-depends on other factors (wrist angles and arm rotations) Face could be anywhere with external rotation...

what if your very external at the top and your dropping the club below the plane...coming too much from inside. My elbow is still inside seam line, but im trying to stay more above the plane so less flippy at impact.
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 3 жыл бұрын
I would confirm you have enough ribcage rotation in downswing FIRST...if still under plane I would look at arm/wrist rotation. Less lead arm pronation/trail arm supination

@@CogornoGolf thank you. Worked some more on this an looked at your legwork video. Found a connection! Better legwork keeps me from pushing towards target...thus keeping arms more in front of chest and more on/above plane. Can you verify this match up makes sense.

Being externally rotated at the top only works well if you have great flexibility. If you’re trying to pinch those elbows together at the top and it feels tight for you, yeah don’t do it. It’ll look pretty but you won’t generate enough speed on the way down

Wow thanks Eric! These are two great feels for me however, I have a question that has been bugging me with this for a while. I swing way better when i use these types of feels and shallow the club. It 'feels' like arms in front but club head stays behind me and then rockets through crazy powerful with little effort! Starting to make single figure scores however I find it much harder to control the face and sometimes it stays open. I notice when many instructors talk about shallowing and physically demonstrate the face is wide open in transition while they are demonstrating but then when they hit one, the face squares. What's the missing link? Simply wrist angles to counter-act opening face of the shallowing OR is it that this type of movement sorta squares the face for you? Sorta thinking of Hogan's demonstration on Shells wonderful world of golf...face looks wide open. Anyway, I didn't mean to type you an essay here so sorry and I understand if you don't have time to answer. Maybe would be cool for a future video failing that?
