We've done other videos on how the wrists work that are individual to maybe one movement. I want to talk a little bit more in detail about the three wrist movements that always happen during the downswing.
Your wrists move in three specific ways during the downswing. Your wrist can hinge up or it can hinge down. Hinging up is radial deviation and hinging down his ulnar deviation. The second way my wrists work is called a flexion and extension or bow and cupped. The last movement of it is really part of my arm as well, which is pronation when the back of the hand is up towards the sky and supination is palm up towards the sky.
In a stock golf swing, if we get ourselves down to the last parallel position, let's assume that my left wrist in this portion is flat. To get my wrists from there in my downswing to the golf ball I am unhinging or ulnar deviating and I am supinating or rotating my forearm.
.
Then I unhinge my wrist to get the club from up in the air to down to the ground. As I'm doing that I'm turning and I'm also adding some supination. At impact, my left wrist is completely unhinged down. And with that, by the time I get to impact, if I have a neutral grip, it has rotated all the way back to, towards the target.
Now let’s talk about from the top of your backswing. Let's assume at the top of the backswing your left wrist is flat. Some players will have a flat left wrist and they maintain their flat left wrist. Some players have a flat left wrist and they go into extension. We would prefer you to go from flat left wrist and keep your left wrist flat, or to go from a flat left wrist into some form of a flexion.
So it's adding flexion, adding supination and unhinging to get the club down to the ball. Those are the three main movements.
Flexion or bow and supination go along together. When you add some flexion, you get some supination for free. If you add extension or you cup your left wrist, you're in big time trouble because that goes with pronation or against supination.
The point of this video is to explain there are three wrist movements. They're happening simultaneously as you go. It's not as though you're making a downswing and saying, okay, I'm going to do this first and then I'm going to unhinge and then I'm going to supinate. They're not broken apart. You're doing them simultaneously. Just like if I walk, I'm doing a bunch of things simultaneously, like any other activity you would do.
The point of this is just information. So one more time, assuming I have a flat wrist at last parallel, the two main motions from here to impact are I'm adding supination or left arm rotation and I'm also unhinging. I'm unhinging with some supination to get the club down to the ball. Ideally I have a flat left wrist and I'm maintaining it. If not flat, I'd rather it be bowed or arched back from here. You can do that from the top. You can do that towards the bottom, or you can do that into the golf ball.

I first learned the left wrist ulner deviation and supination movements made throughout the golfswing after reading Ben Hogan’s book The Five Modern Fundamentals Of The Golf Swing written in 1957. I thought I had found the real Ben Hogan’s SECRET of the golfswing. This is the first time I have heard a Golf Pro correctly explain it in such excellent detail. I want to thank you for your excellent explanations of the fundamental movements of the golf swing and your willingness to share your knowledge to others. You have the gifts of vocal and visual communication. Again, a big thank you for so unselfishly sharing your knowledge with others.

John: Contrary to you, I never saw any ulnar deviation in Hogan’s book, only supination. But maybe I was too focused on supination to notice anything else. Eric’s explanation of unhinging the left wrist on the downswing has rocked my world in a great way, to put it mildly. Even my short pitch shots have a sound and feel I don’t think I’ve ever felt in 50-some years of trying to play this mind-numbing game.

“The point of this is just information.” Thank you for stating that, Eric. My best shots seem to come from a “free hinge.” As in, I don’t try to do anything with my wrists and hands. When it is working best my key thought is knowing where the club head is throughout the swing, as in almost letting it work on its own reacting to body movement.

Hi Eric please believe me I support all your videos giving them a like. And I am thrilled you clarified yourself at the end. But here is something to ponder over. Do we want effortless power in our golf swing or powerless efforts? I promise you telling us what our hands and wrist to do in our golf swing is promoting powerless effort in our swings as we cannot possibly control or think of all of what you said in the 1/2 seconds of our downswing. So what should we do? Simply unlock our wrists from the very beginning of our swing to do whatever the two wrist need to do. I think this may be a better advice then analyzing what we may be seeing a professional golfers be doing with their hands or wrist as they swing their club. Don’t you think? Cheers

Thanks, Eric for explaining the wrist positions. I'm finding that a corollary to maintaining these wrist positions has to do with the lead shoulder on the downswing. By focusing on the lead shoulder feeling more down or horizontal through impact as I turn through I can maintain these wrist positions. In watching you demonstrate the wrist conditions in this video I was keyed in on you lead shoulder.

Very important part of the down swing explained very nicely. One thing I would add to that movement is the importance of the right wrist pronation to go along with the supination of the left wrist for the right hand players. Essentially the right wrist pronation keeps the left wrist in check to make sure it supinates “automatically”.

Thanks so much for your dedication to teaching this sport in such an simple understandable manner. I concur with many that you break down the key elements that both amateurs and probably pros need to work on most. For people to understand why you recommend these moves I would suggest that you mention what happens to the ball flight if you do the opposite which is what I struggle with. Blocked fades to the right (that's if you're delivering your club from the inside!). This may help people diagnose their own problems and see if they're doing enough of what you suggest or too much (a severe draw or hook). Just my humble opinion. Keep up the great work!

Eric - couple of things 1. throw release - confusion reigns re extension at some point - do you believe there has to be extension at some point after impact /towards impact - or would you advocate fighting it - and 2. you talk much about forces/gravity/speed - whats your thoughts on how this all this fit in to using centripetal/centrifugal forces?

Hey! 1. "1. throw release - confusion reigns re extension at some point - do you believe there has to be extension at some point after impact /towards impact - or would you advocate fighting it - and" -Yes...every single golf swing has the lead wrist going toward extension that I have ever seen measured. Just a matter of WHEN and HOW. That depends on GRIP, FACE ANGLE, BODY POSITIONING, SWING DIRECTION, etc. Not it. When/how. 2. "2. you talk much about forces/gravity/speed - whats your thoughts on how this all this fit in to using centripetal/centrifugal forces?" -Too long to comment here with typed response on youtube video....maybe a future video itself!

This is an awesome video but I have two questions... First, is there less supination with the driver and the longer clubs because the ball is farther up in our stance so our body rotation will square the club slightly more? Secondly, can you do another video like this in great detail with the driver? Showing proper wrist conditions and where the clubhead and clubface should be in space?
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! 1. nope 2. Maybe ...in general, its much the same movement. BC the setup is different changes the impact dynamics, but what you are doing in space regarding arm rotation and wrist conditions is the same!

Another great video Eric! I can't unhinge late in the swing without steepening my plane in the early stages, but if I start with it all of my DTL shots are right on plane without any flip and it's a stress free swing. I think it's a P. Croker move? Feels like I'm throwing the lag away but plenty of power. Wondering about your thoughts on this and maybe a secret sauce video about using this move for the weekend warriors. Keep up the good work man! You rock.

Hey Eric, for those of us who prefer to have right side thoughts what do you think about twisting the right forearm from the top of the swing like Mike Austin use to teach? It seems to be more natural because it is a throwing motion as well and it seems to shallow out the club and forces the right right to flatten. I love Austins swing but the way he taught was complicated to say the least. I love how you keep it simple and I am trying to incorporate your teachings with his swing, which I love. Any thought also on his swing? Thanks for keeping is simple!
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 5 жыл бұрын
I have no issues with that IF IT WORKS and makes you apply the right motions....the one issue some people will run into is if that twist their right forearm (supination) during the late backswing they will get a reaction of the opposite motion (pronation) in transition which would steepen the shaft. So really I would have to see the person make the motion to say if its okay for them or not
@jathom21

I've seen instructors say that the unhinging of the wrists adds to power. I get it in the way that it lengthens everything, but I'm having a hard time understanding how unhinging into the ball would increase ball speed. Seems like it would increase backspin. Thoughts?
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 3 жыл бұрын
Hey! I do not understand that premise either. I suppose if you are comparing it to ZERO unhinging (which is not possible, you would miss the ball) than it is more speed. Relative to zero. Meaning if you held a club in front of you hinged UP then unhinge it DOWN the club would be moving faster than if you just lowered your hand.
@jathom21
@jathom21 3 жыл бұрын
@@CogornoGolf Haha. Yes, got it. So the unhinging helps you get back to the ball, square the clubface, and creates a longer lever. Good stuff Eric. Thank you.

First time on your site Eric and fantastic advice. I particularly like the fact that you gave options on how to achieve the desired trail wrist condition. I have been playing with the right wrist bent back but kept delivering the club face open at impact resulting in pushes out to the right. I used to have a cupped left wrist and always felt I hit the ball better when it was flat but could not eliminate the push. Probably not enough rotation? I experimented with the feel of keeping the face pointing to the path in the backswing. This felt as though the face was closed at the top and resulted in the lead wrist being cupped. However in transition as the club shallowed, the lead wrist flattened and the trail wrist bent back and I achieved the position you advocate. It feels like I'm using the weight of the club to naturally achieve this rather than a manipulation - the motorcycle move has defeated me. I know there is a saying 'if it works for you do it' but I wondered if this way was legitimate or a band aid. You have given me the confidence to keep working on it. Have subscribed to your channel and look forward to more pearls of wisdom. Best wishes. Paul K.

Yeah...there are options.... 1. Get the handle more forward 2. Going from the wrist pointing away from me to wrist point behind me has made my draw way easier to reliably hit. It has also produced a straight shot, which to me, is terrifying! My fade, which was my go to tee shot, has now vanished! So, before I have a full on panic attack, what's the hand action from last parallel for the fade?

Joe Sector just less of the same movement OR make your swing direction feel more left. Can feel like you’re holding off arm rotation if you want (that won’t happen in reality but feels can help fade)

Thank you, Eric. I tend to cast - it seems like if I unhinge my left wrist only without bowing, it is casting, but if I do both as I start the downswing, it is actually not casting and actually good... am I correct? Thank you.

Thank Eric. Does your lower body movement help with supination at impact, or should your wrist movement lead to a better body rotation. I seem to be have an upper body first movement. Thanks Jose

Alain Xueabur all depends on how you match it with grip and arm rotation. It does not automatically create a big draw. If it does for you I would look at those 2 above pieces and make sure swing direction isn’t too far right

Hey man, can you tell me why it's a bad idea to start with the wrist flexed and keep it into the backswing? Why do golfers implement it half way through the swing?
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 6 жыл бұрын
With a stock normal grip you start with some extension of the lead wrist. To start with it flexed you would need a really really weak grip. Could you do it? Sure.

I was told once by a golf coach who worked at my local golf range years ago to stop cupping the wrists at impact was to practice hitting a impact bag.guess what I never went back for a lesson again as the golf coach could not or would not tell me how the wrists work in the golf swing.

Hey Eric, great video with lotsa insights! I just have a question: I usually unhinge and flex even before the down swing (I.e. I unhinge while addressing the ball and maintain it that way; also, I begin flexion on the upswing and maintain it from then on), so that I only have to think about supination when I’m in the downswing. Is this recommended/not recommended?? Thanks so much, watching and supporting your channel all the way from Singapore! -Jeremy

Best explanation ever. My game actually fell apart trying the "modern swing". I haven't seen anyone explain the function of the wrists on the downswing, and I now know why I was never able to take a decent divot. My ball striking is 1000% improved. One move that you did not mention that helped me make crisp contact was that I needed to continue moving my hands forward through the hitting zone, and if I slow down or stall then I would chunk it, Any thoughts?

Way to complicated. . The use of all these technical terms interchanged with just simple wrist action description is complex; trying to think about all of these movements is paralysis by analysis. The focus should be on the proper one piece takeaway, the proper transition without tension and the wrists will take care of themselves.

This is simply the double speak of why no one ever gets better taking lessons but they end up with a a lot less cash. NOT a bit of all the supination...flexion crap is necessary or helps anyone at all. It's what so called teachers do to confuse the student and make it sound like they have this wealth of knowledge.

@@CogornoGolf My issue is this. I'm a good player and wanted to confirm something I had in mind, but all I run into is people like yourself that simply LOVE to hear yourself talk more than anything else. YOU CONFUSE people about this game with 10 minute clips that have no real value except being long. This isn't rocket science and that's why for the last 60 years few is getting better and scores are the same as in the 1940's, but they are getting MUCH slower. In all my teachers I had only ONE that had a clue how to teach OR hit a real golf shot, and that's when I got to hit solid shots that sizzle of the club-face. I might have kn own you had a vocabulary that proved my point. I'll not write anymore and just delete my comments since no one can have an opinion but you of course. All you want to hear are accolades because this seems to be all about ego.
