I used to draw the ball all the time. I'm 62 and I have screwed up my swing trying to hit it further. My index has gone from 3.8 to almost 7 in just two revisions. I just realized, Clay, after watching your newest video with the drills to promote draws, that, at the top of my backswing the back of my left hand as been pointing at my face! It's a miracle I can hit it at all. Also at the start of my downswing, unbelievably, my right leg has been moving about 3-4" TOWARDS my right foot. In other words, if I were to put an alignment rod across my thighs, on the start of the down swing my right let is about 4" closer to my right foot. As you note, try throwing a ball, hitting a tennis ball or hitting a golf ball with your right leg moving 90 degrees perpendicular to the target as you start down. You HAVE to throw your arms over the top to compensate. Any other move is impossible. I went out and hit some balls with this in mind earlier today, and it was like a miracle. Thanks for your help!

Very helpful! For others on here who are struggling with a badly cupped wrist at the top of the backswing - what helped me out was realizing that the thumb on my leading hand was taking control and getting under the shaft at the top of the backswing to "support" the club. When I focused on relaxing that thumb and applying pressure instead by squeezing the shaft against the fat part of my palm with the ring and little finger, I was immediately able to keep the wrist much more neutral.

Clay, I had read Ben Hogan's Five Lessons and when he said to use the last 3 fingers in your left hand to "supinate" your left wrist I misunderstood that which led me to turn the doorknob to the left instead of to the right at the top in transition from the top. That has caused MANY problems including golfers elbow injury. I feel through this video I may have been set free. As I watched it initially with my mistaken concept I thought you might have misspoke about turning the door knob to the right. I do believe this will revolutionize my golf swing. Thx
@toddg6263

I understand now that the supination that Ben Hogan taught comes right before impact not from the top. Turning the doorknob to the left right before impact. Pronation in transition to shallow the club and supination before impact. Wow

Hey lefty here...I'm pretty sure I'm shallowing out the club, but might be doing so before my downswing even starts (flat?). I've been having some wrist pain in my right wrist (not sure if it's from improper form, lack of play, or from carpal tunnel from using a computer mouse all day). If I do I slow practice swing in the positions in the drill, the pain will happen right when I start my downswing. Without a club, if I spread my fingers (hand straight out in front of me) and pronate my arm, I feel it there too. I know you're not a doctor but I'd love to submit a video and see what you think. I've never had a lesson, but I'm about a 5 HCP. I can hit the ball 320 on a good drive, but recently my drive hasn't been launching correctly. Irons have been accurate, but that's the majority's problem.

thanks for the detail. so you say the very first move away from the ball should be some pronation. I like to see my toe of the club parallel to the spine halfway back which you said is ok. whenever i try to pronate a little starting back it opens the clubface more than I like to see. should I try to bow the wrist more as I pronate it then? thanks
@TopSpeedGolf
@TopSpeedGolf 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael, thanks for the comment. It's really not important how much your rotates in your backswing. What matters most is the face at impact. You can get a little more speed if you roll the wrists more because the toe will be moving a little fast through impact. You can do whatever works best for you. I hope that helps. Help Clay!! I finally understand why laying off the club slightly on the way down is crucial to a square consistent impact. My problem is I cannot do that via flexion. My brain can't do it and/or I'm not flexible enough. Is it possible to think of it as pronating the left wrist and forearm on the way down while dropping the right elbow in the slot?

Hi Clay,I'm unclear on how much your left wrist should be pronated at the top of the back swing. It is physically possible to pronate the wrist to where, at the top of swing, the back of the hand is facing upward to the sky. But your wrist and hand position at the top of your swing don't appear to be pronated that far over to the right. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.Thank-you !

Why not set up with bowed wrist and forward shaft lean at setup if that is the desired position at impact? In order to return club face to square to target line at impact, it seems an easier feel in the swing for me to return the hands to the initial start position.

Tremendous video. Does a strong grip tend to produce more lag?
@TopSpeedGolf
@TopSpeedGolf 6 жыл бұрын
Hi wgb8210 Thank you for your question. A stronger does not necessarily help promote more lag. Others may need a stronger grip and it may produce more lag in their swing but it isn't a huge factor for more lag in the swing. Best of luck!

Hi Clay I see Justin Thomas has a pronounced bowing of the left wrist at the top of his swing ; with no additional bowing of his lead wrist needed as he executes his down swing. Have any idea how and why he may choose to do this painful maneuver for most of us? I do. But would love to hear your theory about it and compare notes. In fact surprisingly at 71 I feel I can now do this myself with excellent results. Cheers. Also have you ever taught about aiming the tip of a parallel golf shaft to the target before we swing? Cheers. I really do enjoy your videos. Cheers.

@TopSpeedGolf 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Thomas, the bowing of the lead wrist at the top of the swing that you see from guys like JT, Dusting Johnson, Jon Rahm, Daniel Berger, Brooks Koepka and so on is squaring the face early. Bowing the lead wrist is what square the face when you have forward shaft lean. It's not easy to do though. The easiest way is to have a flattish wrist at the top and then start to bow it in the transition. This is what most pros do. Yeah, I have thought about starting the swing from the top. The problem is that you're sort of lost in space. The other problem is that you're not taking advantage of something called the stretch-shortening cycle. This is like when a basketball player squats down to rebound a ball. If that player just stayed in that squatted position then tried to jump up and get the ball then they wouldn't be able to jump as high. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

Thank you. Yes I do find myself kinda in a lost position at the top even though I hit the ball well with bowing my wrist at the top. However I do it because I find my back turn is more consistent as I am forced to rotate/ pivot my body well to the top of my swing or feel the pain from the deliberate bowing of my lead wrist. It has it's advantage of not maneuvering or rolling my lead hand at the top which I find difficult in timing to do. Very interesting all the different ways we explore at striking at a golf ball. Finally spring is here. Cheers

@@TopSpeedGolf This is why I like Clay and Adam Bazelgette's teaching because, unlike the total lower body gurus, they realize 99.95% of us are not athletic freaks. I think a lot of this modern instruction is making golf immensely harder for 99% of the golfing population. Ironically this is why left tackles are the most valuable people on football teams as there are like only about 100 guys of that size who can move their hips in the manner necessary to stop defensive ends from getting the edge. It's the same thing with this warp speed hip rotation that is all the rage in golf instruction. Hardly anyone over 30 can do it unless he or she is an elite-level athlete.

Radial deviation vs Owner deviation. Since my comeback(March 2019).....I convinced myself using RD. Thumbs up. Today I started owner deviation after studying Harry Vardon and Moe Norman. I dont see many tour players using thumbs up version. Coupled with changing my grip from baseball to Vardon also, I feel that when I make solid contact it feels better and fligh truer. I know its going to take 10 000 balls to settle in.....(I did 120....so far hi hi)

McIlroy plays with a fairly strong left hand grip but has a flat left wrist at the top (or at least when he starts down). Any issues with this? How about having the left wrist flat at the end of the takeaway? That seems easier for me that trying to do it at other points in the swing.
@TopSpeedGolf
@TopSpeedGolf 7 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for the comment. There isn't really an issue with this. It's most important to have the face square and with forward shaft lean at impact. Depending on the strength of your grip, it might be bowed, flat or appear to be little cupped. If you're wrist is cupped at the top then it can make it a little more difficult to get it in a better position at impact. The main point is that the wrist angles don't matter anywhere except impact. Get that right and you're golden. I hope that helps. Play well ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor

Hi Clay, when the little screen video of your swing pops up at 1.15, I have marked the position of your head and you do not move towards the target from address all the way until after impact. My head and upper torso will sway towards the target about 3 to 5 inches from transition till impact...How do you manage to keep your head back dead still and even a little move backwards without any sway towards the target
@TopSpeedGolf
@TopSpeedGolf 7 жыл бұрын
Hi New Thank you for your comment and thank you for your analysis in the swing with head. I would say that is one of the most common things we see is the head moving laterally. The first thing I would check is our spine angle at address and through impact. I've attached a video link talking about spine angle. Thanks Clay, I really appreciate your swift reply and video link. I watched the video and found it enlightening. I do record my swing on video as you suggest and at address I do have about 6°of spine tilt just like you do. At impact I get my left hip towards the target about 4" just like you do but sadly because of my head and upper torso sway I only get about 8° of tilt, an increase of 2°. You on the other hand increase your spine tilt up to 20°, an increase of about 14° just like many of the big hitting PGA players. I think this is one of your key moves other than lag as to why you belt the ball a country mile...Please tell me how you manage to keep your head back like that?

Hi Clay. I have a slight strong grip. If I look down At my hands at address, there is a slight cup. My coach wants be to mirror this same cup at the top of the backswing. You suggest a flat wrist. Can you please comment?
@TopSpeedGolf
@TopSpeedGolf 6 жыл бұрын
I Juan, it's totally fine to have a cub at address. In fact, you'll see that most pros will have at least a slight club in the lead wrist at address. I would recommend being flat or bowed a little at the top. This is going to make it easier to shallow the club and square the face earlier going into impact. If the wrist is cupped then the wrist has to flatten out or bow at some point to square the face. It's not to say that you can't play great golf having a cupped wrist at the top. Freddy Couples is a great example of that. I would always recommend you ask a lot of questions during a lesson. Make sure you understand why an instructor is telling you to do something and you'll get a lot more out of the lesson. Play well! ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor

Top Speed Golf - Clay Ballard. Thanks Quentin. I believe he wanted me to have the same shape cup at address and the top of my swing to ensure the face is square at address and square at the top of the swing. He mentioned that if I have a flat or bowed wrist at the top face is closed which can lead to hooks. I struggle with heel strikes on my driver and pro suggested closed face, flat wrist and steep shaft will result in heel strikes. I have been to multiple pros and all have different recipes/opinions of what the swing is. Rgrds Juan

Hi Clay, or Quentin..I was trying to shallow out or bring my arms slightly more on the inside on the backdswing...i saw on another channel that a good lateral pivot can achieve that so it sets me up to swing more from the inside...is that ok?
@TopSpeedGolf
@TopSpeedGolf 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it definitely helps to get really good and loaded up at the top. You want to make sure that you're keeping your spine stable. Too much lateral movement can cause a reverse pivot and it's really difficult to hit a solid shot from that position. Hi, is the pronation at the top useful to create lag later?
@TopSpeedGolf
@TopSpeedGolf 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Sonia, yes, the pronation of the left wrist (assuming you're right handed) at the top helps you shallow the club. This gives the appearance of more lag in the downswing when looking from face on because the club is on a flatter plane. Play well ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor

hi clay. i'm trying one of your drills from another video where you talk about getting the full release with the 45 45 and straight arm and club. which is fine and feels like alot of speed.... but it also feels like alot of strain on my left wrist. so when i end at the full release position, the club then causes my left wrist to break down into a slightly cupped position. this then causes a strain. am i doing somethign wrong? or is the drill to reach full release not meant to be done at speed? help!
@TopSpeedGolf
@TopSpeedGolf 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Benson, it's hard to say exactly what is going on without seeing your swing but it sounds like your body is stopping and not getting into a full finish. Once your body stops, the momentum of the club keeps going and this could be what is causing your wrist pain. I would recommend focusing on getting into a full finish position with your hips pointed left of the target and your chest pointed further left with the club wrapped around (assuming you're right handed). I hope that helps. Play well! ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor

So, I had a wrist/forearm injury when I was younger and I have very limited pronation and virtually no supination. Whenever I try to release the club through impact it puts a lot of pressure on the external rotation of my left shoulder to the point where it feels like it will dislocate if I swing hard enough. Any ideas on how to work around this and still have good club head speed?
@TopSpeedGolf

Hi Brandon, I would focus on your shoulder turn and possibly getting your hands higher. This will give you more time to accelerate the club in order to build club head speed into impact. This is one of the keys to the TSG System. Here is the link to it on the website if you want to check it out: topspeedgolf.com/courses/the-power-turn/. Play well ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor

Is this a conscious move, or a result?
@TopSpeedGolf
@TopSpeedGolf 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Josh, that depends. If you don't see your wrists making these movements on camera then you're going to need to consciously make it happen. Think about it like learning how to walk. Is it really a conscious effort for you do you just put one foot in front of the other without much thought. Unless you're a 2 year old, you're probably not thinking about it much. I hope that helps. PLEASE HELP... whenever I make try to mimic my golf swing (without a club in my hands) my lead wrist is flat and in perfect position at the top BUT the second I put any club in my hand and attempt a practice swing the lead wrist is always very cupped at the top... why does simply adding the club in my hand change that ??
@TopSpeedGolf

Because it's not the same. You're gripping a club and swinging as opposed to moving your arms through the air.

in stead of doing this, can i keep my left wrist dead flat in the backswing n keep my left wrist dead flat during downswing?
@TopSpeedGolf
@TopSpeedGolf 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Ryan, yeah, you can certainly try to but it hard to this because you're of the weight of the club. If you have a weak to neutral grip then you may not be able to get as much forward shaft lean as you want if your lead wrist is flat. You may want it to be a little bowed. Yes and you'll have a hard time making room for the club to come through if you don't open your hips and will likely go into early hip extension and lose your posture. Best of luck! Nate | TSG Instructor.

When did the whole bowed wrist theme come about? You never used to hear about it. It seems to me you have to have an extremely weak grip or else your club face will be shut down into the ground on impact!

le proboscis between the bowing and the strong grip, it allows him to get his club face around enough where he can utilize his incredible athleticism and rotate his body an insane amount on the downswing to achieve his world class speed and shaft lean without slicing the ball off the planet.

Do you think the movement shallow is done more by the gravity or by muscles? gg
@TopSpeedGolf
@TopSpeedGolf 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Juni, it is definitely the movement of the body. You have to let gravity work for you to shallow the club. If you are pushing too much up then the club can't shallow. Play well ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor

How lose or relax is your wrist? Do you force your left wrist to remain flat? My natural back swing cups my left wrist. I need to force it in order to keep left wrist flat during the back and down swing
@TopSpeedGolf
@TopSpeedGolf 7 жыл бұрын
Hi, this really depend on what your current natural tendency is. If you cup it then you may need to force yourself to keep it flat until you can get used to the feeling and do it naturally. It's fine to cup the wrist but you're just going to have to manipulate the club to get it to square at impact. Most people have a hard time doing that and get forward shaft lean. Most of the time it leads to flipping and coming down steep. Clay talks about shallowing the club in The Move section on the website. Here is the link if you wan to check it out: topspeedgolf.com/courses/the-move/. Play well ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor

working on it as well....it will feel if you do it correctly for us "cupped" players that you need to really force the left hand to hinge the club "inside feeling" it is so odd and uncomfortable...but a practice for 3-4 weeks will get you out of that old cupped move....still work in progress... He says think "bowed" i would agree to bow it out or force that to happen once you have made a one piece takeaway after youve gotten to about right thigh then work on hinging hard / bow/ and let shoulders take over once you have set wrist so the right elbow folds correctly

@@drewmitchell9555 lol that's exactly how it feels. If i don't bend the elbow its like it won't work. Ive just gotta get over the fact that i'm not that flexible and my backswing isn't that far around

I think you maybe feel you have more "lag" than you actually do... 6:28 in the video. I'm not talking smack, I'm trying to learn based on the actuality of what is happening vice what people think is happening. Lag gets tossed around so much, but at a no tour swing speed it's not possible to have a tremendous amount of lag.
@TopSpeedGolf
@TopSpeedGolf 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Jeremy, speed can definitely help increase the appearance of lag but that doesn't mean it isn't achievable with slower swing speed players. The appearance of a sharp angle of lag is mostly caused by the shallowing of the club in the downswing. Sergio Garcia shallows the club more than anyone on Tour and he has one of the sharpest angles of lag you'll see. This isn't because he is bending his wrists more than anyone because you can only bend your wrist so far. Most people can only make a little less than a 90 degree angle with the shaft and forearm. We found that the PGA average max lag position was about 60 degrees. Play well ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor

Thank you for the response. I guess the rate and position of release is my hold up. Most people show in demonstration a near parallel club shaft after passing the right thigh, but in all the cases of full speed swings that I've seen, this hasn't been the case. What is the benefit of showing an unobtainable position. Is it more of a feel thing, or if you try that you won't release early?
@TopSpeedGolf
@TopSpeedGolf 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Jeremy, typically the club will be parallel to the ground when the hands are in front of the trail thigh. That is what is being shown at 6:28. This can vary some though. You can release it a little earlier or later and it is fine. The main thing is having forward shaft lean at impact. Forward shaft lean is a product of releasing the club out in front. This is what Clay talks about in the TSG System in the Straight-Line Release section. Here is the link if you want to check it out: topspeedgolf.com/courses/the-release/. You shouldn't use the phrase "my wrists pronate". As when the left wrist pronates, the right wrist is obviously supinating.

I like Clay, he reveals more than most. However, address is not neutral. Ulnar deviation is required at address, do that and and the left wrist (rh golfer) will naturally do everything else Clay talks about without you having to think about it. This video could have been just 20 seconds long to reveal this truth but the teaching industry doesnt want you to know the truth.
@TopSpeedGolf
@TopSpeedGolf 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Yozzi, yes, the lead wrist should be in a little bit of ulnar deviation at address. It will vary some based on how close you stand to the ball. Also ,these crazy detail videos are meant for people to go out and make sure every little movement is happening as we say. This is more about what the wrist is doing throughout the swing. Ideally, you would do this naturally. Hope you're playing well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
