When I say lead arm supination, if you were to kind of just hold your left arm (for a right-handed golfer) or lead arm out in front of you, palm facing to the right and then you were to take that arm and make it go palm up, that little move right there is supination.
I think a lot of people think they shouldn't rotate their arm that much during the golf swing and they should be just thinking about what their body does. That couldn't be farther from the truth. The better golfers have more forearm rotation during their downswing and follow through than you do.
In the early phases of the downswing, there's not going to be a ton of supination, but it happens sooner than we would expect. If you're trying to rotate by impact, your brain is beginning that process starting pretty early in the downswing. Usually better players are supinating earlier than amateur golfers.
If I were to get into a position when I get down to last parallel and we were to look at the back of my left hand, or the logo of my glove, it is going to point more or less straight away from me at this position. My left hand from that position needs to go from straight away from me to square to the target and then it needs to go to the left.
Put a club in your hands and get down to the last parallel. Get the grip pointed away from you and get it from there to pointed to the left past impact. That's how much rotation your arms should feel. Now, if that feels like a lot to you, then you probably don't do enough. If that feels like nothing at all, then maybe you have more than you need in there. I would prefer to throw more lead arm supination in someone's swing than not enough. Very rarely will see someone who has too much lead arm supination.
The more you rotate your forearms - or supinate - it acts to square the club face or close the club face to the plane. Now how are you going to know whether you have enough supination not enough supination? What's your judge of that? Your judgment is mostly based on ball flight, meaning there's going be a correlation between how much you supinate and where the face is pointed and/or if you supinate too much. If you rotate your forearms too much, it increases the odds of the ball going to the left - so pulls mostly or hooks to the left. If you don't have enough supination, it increases the odds of you hitting the ball to the right.
You're adding in supination as much as needed or not needed. If you are struggling with right shots, have more. If you hit it left, don't do it as much. Most of you need to add supination. We know that the better players have more supination. Very few of you need to take supination out. So, stop being afraid to use your arms and hands.

I've watched a lot of your videos. This is one of the best. A long time ago, I heard an instructor say, "Pay yourself on the follow through." In other words have your left/lead palm to the sky. I will say, it's not the easiest thing to time. But, when you do it right, you get solid contact, and more distance.

Dude, THAT is how you teach thousands of people at once without even seeing swings. The ‘How to do it, when to do it and why to do it’ I’m telling you, every instructor that puts videos up on KZbin needs to take teaching lessons from you. You really make it so easy to understand. You basically covered every question I had as they came up. I’m a former baseball player and I’ve been stuck at like 12-13 for 2 years and your videos like this have gotten me down to 9.6 in two weeks lol Wish you were in Syracuse!

Thanks Eric, you explained supination so clearly I now now what it means! Years ago l had some lessons but this was never mentioned. One instructor only told me that when I reach the bottom of the swing I should throw-the-toe of the club. It worked for a while but got lost in my notes and soon forgotten. Eric, your explanation to me is a game changer. I thank you so much for all that you say and do on KZbin. Keep up the great work for us.

Eric I have had lessons with a coach who hates when I let my left wrist turn over like this. And I’ve had lessons with a coach emphasizes that I need to let my left wrist turnover, he prefers I hit left pulls then to never shut the head. Are these just different philosophies of the game? I hit so much better when I let the wrist turn up like this speed is just amplified, but always doubt if this is right or wrong, it really helps me finish the swing all the way through. Thank you.

Another quality video Eric. Clear, consise instruction and very practical. I had a week layoff and played -2 in a howling gale tonight and could easily have been lower. Key thought for me was supination to outside of target line post impact, as you point out supination itself starts well before that. Long game hasn't felt this good in a very long time and approach shots also more consistent too. Many thanks ⛳️

Like all swing changes - and this an important one as it adds significant speed to the swing - it will most likely require a complimentary adjustment. I have found that when I first started doing this - I got more speed and much better contact especially with the irons - but would see pulls and hooks with the longer clubs/ driver. In my case, it was not that my old swing had sufficient supination - but my hand path on the downswing had been traditionally too far from my body. A tendency that a lot of us have at swinging the hands too much "at" the ball. My hand path on the downswing needed to be much closer to my body as the supination moves the clubface automatically out more in front of the body. A good view of this at about 4:30 min of the video.

I play ice hockey and I supinate in a slapshot...I was told, as a hockey player, I would pick up the golf swing easily! It hasn't been that easy. If it was, I'd wouldn't be seeking sound advice, coaching tips, etc. I just never had put the two sports together...SMH! Just what I need. Traced my pull hook to this...guess I'm one of the rare people who over supinates. Starts a bit left, and then hooks dramatically because of my in to out path. When I try to supinate less, it "feels" like my face is wide open, but flies straighter. Problem is I tend to thin it while supinating less...if it ain't one thing, it's another 😀 thanks for the video, need to keep working at it.

"You want to have your hands rotating. How much? A lot!" - awesome I believe that these motions are the important / fundamental part of the swing. While the rest of the swing is done to support these 'in the hitting zone' moves. This is why you see so much variability in the overall swing, but very little variability in the hitting zone. But like Eric states, the amount of supination combines with the grip 'strength' to deliver the club face square, while swinging at speed.
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 6 жыл бұрын
Absolutely...there is a lot of supination going on...doesn't always look that way as the player is rotating along with it.

Eric, great video. I hope you have a moment to answer this question. When I do this move, I hit a very very low draw (about 25 feet at its peak). I don't have a fast club head speed, I hit my 6 iron about 150 yards (maybe that's part of the problem). I tried moving the ball up in my stance to get it up higher, it does a little bit, but that draw turns into a hook. How can I supinate and get the ball much higher in the air?
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 6 жыл бұрын
The less the clubhead speed the more you need LEAD WRIST EXTENSION past impact....feeling the club flipping past your hands PAST IMPACT...if you keep lead wrist in flexion as you supination you wont have enough dynamic to hit it anywhere. Also check your angle of attack is more toward shallow...you can't afford too much down.

Again, great and clarifying video Eric. I understand it and yes I see those guys doing that thing when having to wait. Yet, can you say something about the supination motion in relation to other body parts? In specific the hips. For example how open should they be when I come down to club parallel position (hand facing away). Where should my right pelvis be pointing? I often feel I have no room to move. In reaction thinking I supinate too much...so I stop doing that and guess what?...next shot blocked to the right :-)..thanks

@CogornoGolf

Hey Jim! That really depends on how you define "wristy" and who was saying it...how would they define it? I would assume "wristy" would be "flippy" meaning too mean lead wrist extension or CUP. Here is some more info on wrist movements that may help clarify: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i2bakGqOrMaJodU kzbin.info/www/bejne/fpjLdn1jrZx5pM0 kzbin.info/www/bejne/fp3dn4uIetlmbcU

Another great video, thanks Eric. I see all of the pro's do this in varying degrees, and when I can execute it properly, crisp/penetrating shots. I've had lessons with a couple teaching professionals who advocate squaring the clubface with the body, not hands/arms, which doesn't have the same effect. I have always felt the supination of the lead arm can really "spank" the golf ball resulting in a powerful shot, similar to tennis. Also, the supination causes the club head to travel a great distance (from parallel to parallel) with such a small arm/wrist rotation. That's when I feel I have great club had speed. Anyway, thanks for the instruction, and some of your replies to comments are priceless.

Hi Eric, Just stumbled upon this video and channel, Subscribed. I’m right handed but left arm/leg dominant. Play a lot disc golf throwing left handed, so I’m used to coming across and opening the chest. Believe I may have naturally been doing supination. Took my first lesson couple weeks ago, after about 10-15 swings he said we are done here. Had me hitting the ball dead straight and pure. Was rushing the swing and coming out of posture. Took a lesson with someone else, he messed something up. I’ll have to pull out the go-pro and see what’s going on post impact. When I told the second instructor this he said “that is interesting and puts you at an advantage” but didn’t elaborate. Serious to know if you have ever worked with someone that was right handed but left side dominate as myself? Thanks

I simply love most of your videos! When I try this with the same position as you at last parallell and then rotate my left hand my clubface is definitely closed. What's the reason for this? It's hard to believe it's because my grip is strong because I have a three knuckle grip at most. What would you say if I claimed that one of the secrets to good golf could be that the absolute best players control their face with "only" or mainly with the left hand? It makes a whole lot of sense to me since if you are a right handed person and you try to swing as if the grip is one unit the hands might work against eachother. If you look at for instance Dustin when he hits balls his right hand is basically off the grip at impact which would imply it's only there to support. Both Moe Norman and also Jack Nicklaus had very personal grips leading to mainly one hand being the controller. What's your thought about this? Thank you, Viking, Sweden.

20-30 years ago we were taught to roll our forearms over to stop the slice. From down the line the butt end was facing back at you. This led to big duck hooks and wildly inconsistent strikes. Now days we are taught to rotate the body more and and take the club handle left holding off the face. I still fight pulls and hooks. I’ve been trying to add more flat/bowed left wrist at impact and feel as if my right wrist is cupped wiping over to the left post impact to get shaft lean and eliminate any flip. Left knuckles down, right palm down. I don’t know? Impact and compression are solid but it can add too much right to left. Even setting up with the face slightly open and it can still go left. I’m a bit confused. My game is 77-87. Where do I go at this point?

Eric, thanks for all the great understandable content. In regard to the forearms, I find setting-up with the inside of the forearms facing upward allows me to make a better backswing using my shoulders versus just arms. Am I losing some benefit by not having my lead forearm in a more neutral or inward facing position for the backswing or downswing? I am using a strong grip. Thanks
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Saverio! When you say UP...you mean like forearms pointing toward the ball, not you? IF youre using a strong grip you may be able to do that with trail arm (more toward supination) but not lead arm which in a stronger position should make lead arm more internally rotated and lead arm more pronated (forearm toward you or ground)

I am currently blocking all my drives.. so I am going to try the supination. So I should be supinating the entire left arm from the shoulder socket? Is this the best approach? My other swing though is to create extension with the arms down the target line.. Is this stopping the supination from happening naturally?
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 6 жыл бұрын
Should you be supinating entire arm? Yes. If you are blocking the ball (with little curve just push to the right) you also in all likelihood have a path thats slightly too inside-out. You can shift your path slightly more left to fix that....LOTS of drills for that. I have some videos on fixing a hook that would apply (as a push falls in the same ball pattern)

Good video. But how do you reconcile your suggestion in your video on “Right wrist move for solid hitting” where you suggest that it would be best for most golfers to keep the right wrist bent even past impact (6:34) with these comments about lead arm supination. How do you hold right wrist bent past impact and supinate? A video discussing these concepts simultaneously would be helpful.
@CogornoGolf

You can very easy have your right wrist bent back (extended) and supinate. Play around with it. In reality, the trail wrist will lose extension...for everyone...that was just a drill.

Would supination hold true with woods, off the deck, off the tee? I have often wondered whether I should supinate or not because I was always afraid of over rotating and hooking the ball.The one thing that you mentioned as far as changing the grip to compensate for what the ball flight is telling you is probably the answer for me.l know there are a few more variables in the swing but this would be a great starting point.Supination would also give you an aid to transferring your weight and allow a nice full follow thru on your finish looking more like the pros do. Another very informative video by Eric C, many thanks.

Truth vs Reality - golf tip. Eric speaks the absolute truth no doubt about it - BUT, the reality is elite players are not actively supination the left arm, they are releasing the anatomy of their right arm, imagine karate kid, holding your right fist, palm up, and punch forward, notice how much your arms twist, the faster you straighten/extend your arms the harder the punch and the faster the supination. you don't punch faster by supinating more. add in a pivot and body rotation, and you can start to punch through boards, and elite martial artists punch thru bricks. high handicappers are trying to steer or control the swing and thus they have no choice but to hold on and not supinate. proper lead arm supination is an effect of a good pivot and release of your anatomy.
