1st time taking the gearbox out of a “R” today, little knowledge and I really enjoyed trying to line up and refit the long coupling back into the transfer case and removing the 2 top mount bolts is fantastic if you have the correct lengths of extensions 👍🏽

Question, if the bevel box goes bad, what symptoms have you seen? I know they can hum and whine, or lock up. What about banging the driveline on acceleration so hard that the propshaft damper at the haldex sheds the outer steal ring off of the damper? Could a faulty Haldex/pump cause driveline banging on launch or hard acceleration?

@@charleyeller692 I’m having the same problem. I’ve lost 4wd & I’m also getting vibration. It seems a faulty transfer case ruins the prop shaft flex disk which causes the vibration. I’ve tried jacking the car up & twisting the prop with grips to check the transfer case, but it didn’t budge at all. I think it only slips under very high loads. I’ve also regularly serviced my haldex pump & I’ve got no faults stored. I find it hard to believe that my haldex pump & flex disk failed at the same time which makes me suspect the transfer case. I’ll update as I find out more. I’m also tuned which points to transfer case.

If you are just doing the clutch on the MK7 Golf R, the 2x4 trick is all you need to clear the transfer case and drop the transmission? Seems like this helps having to mess with pulling out the driveshaft as is.

Dsg and manual transfer box are the same, you just have to change the shaft as they are differant lengths

I’m in the process of replacing my clutch in my Mk6 golf r and I can’t seem to get the passenger side drive flange out of the bevel box. I see that you used a pry bar but mine will only come out like 1/2”. Also the 6mm Allen bolt is removed from inside the bevel box. Any help would be appreciated? Thanks.

Chad Pokrywka as long as the 6mm bolt is removed you just need to pry it really hard

carwerks101 how big of a pry bar did you use? I got a 33in one from harbor freight and it flexes too much I guess.

Initially I wasn't going to remove the output flange but my bevel box support bracket is C-shaped and simply doesn't come out like the L-shaped one in your video. And since I can't remove the bracket, I can't move the bevel box off the transmission cause the bracket hits my oil return line from the turbo. I'll give it a try again tomorrow.

@@chadp1230 yeah you just need to give it a prety good pry to intialy pop it out, and some engines are different than others so you need to remove it

Could you tell us what the torque spec is on the 4 16mm mounting bolts and the 6mm axle bolt? Cant find the specs anywhere :(

just off the top of my head 40nm for the 4 bolts, and 15nm for the 6mm bolt

My Tiguan has the same bevel box but a different axle. From the VW Service manual: "Bevel Box New Bolts (Mandatory Replacement Part) 40Nm + 90deg additional turn." The extra turn makes it a "stretch bolt" that should only be used once. Hence it being a replacement part. The dealers sell those for a couple bucks each. Side Note: If this is your car or if you care about the next person that will own it, I would suggest downloading the relevant VW factory service manuals from erwin.vw.com/erwin/showOrderFlatrate.do Their one day subscription is just $35. These projects involve critical components and installation methods such as the order of torquing bolts and specific to this project, how to put the wheels in the "curb weight position" when reinstalling the control arms so that the rubber bushings in the ball joints aren't damaged. KZbin still has value especially for seeing the steps performed in real time and I thumbs up the video.

@@ACitizenOfOurWorld Thanks! The kit from ECS had all the stretch bolts except the bevel box bolts (had to get them locally) and the manual I found online has all the info except the AWD info. Must all be for a GTI. Can you save the PDF files from Erwin to look at them again later?

@@jamesbenninger8288 ECS is great. Deutsche Auto Parts as well. And yes definitely VW lets you download whatever you need within the 24 hr subscription period. It took me a few hours but now I have all the service manuals; 6 speed transmission, the 4 cylinder fuel injection engine, the suspension wheel, brakes, rear final drive, plus the electrical wiring diagrams and all the fluid capacity tables and service bulletins. I used to use alldatadiy and recall they were often partially copied from the VW manual, just not as complete. The one annoying thing is that each time you open any of the pdfs, they ask you confirm you've read all the cautions and warnings because they want to be legally sure you know that working on a car can be dangerous. I know there is a way to disable javascript in Acrobat though if it bothers you. Once open however, all the headings and indexes are hyperlinked so you can jump to the relevant sections quickly.

Hello, I also have a problem with my golf 6r, the oil has dripped over time and now when is cold car from 0°until 70° I change the gears from 1-2 or 2-3, it beats the gear a lot and when it is hot 85° up there is no problem, could this be the reason ( transfer case ) maybe because is no oil on it ? if there was no oil then it would be broken already. have you tried a different type of oil?

No , i didn't try nothing to put oil on it , but this beats from Transmission is making me crazy and i can't understand why only when is cold max until 75° or 80° and then is perfect

@@bashkimdeari because the oil gest thinner as it gets hotter and makes it easier to shift, it may be time for a rebuild, you can try high performance sythentic oil first
