I genuinely think wrist angles are the secret to shallowing your downswing. Meaning if you get this part right, the other stuff doesn't matter nearly as much.
First, let’s reiterate and make sure you guys understand what I mean when I say shallow your downswing. For the purpose of this video, I'm talking specifically about the plane that the club is on. When I say shallow, I'm saying the club is going to go onto a lower or more shallow angle, more horizontal. And the secret to getting onto a shallower or more flat plane is wrist angles.
Where you start from at the top of your backswing will affect what you need to do to shallow the shaft. Let's assume in utopia when you get to the top of your swing your left wrist is perfectly flat your right wrist is bent back.
How would I get the club to go on a flatter angle through my wrist angles? Number one, I'd take my left wrist and go from a flat position into a more bowed position. If you take your left wrist from flat to bowed down, it lays the shaft down. The opposite is also true. If I extend or cup my left wrist the shaft will get more vertical.
if you start flat and you bow or flatten your wrist, the shaft gets more behind you. If you flex your wrist, the shaft gets steep or more vertical in front of you. Every single person watching this video who comes from flat would benefit from either staying flat on the same plane or flexing and getting on a shallower plane.
If you're not coming from flat, if you at the top and you're coming from bowed, the same principle applies. If you are at the top and have a cupped wrist, the same principle also applies. If you want to shallow the club, you bow your wrist.
The other piece that goes with this is wrist hinge. If I take my left wrist and I unhinge it, or hinge down (ulnar deviation) that goes right along with my left wrist being flat or bowed.
There's no mystery here. If you’ve been wondering why you can’t shallow the shaft you need to look at your wrist angles.

I'd like your perspective on something: what I have done is gone to the top of the backswing, done the Dustin Johnson bowing, taken my right wrist off the club, lowered my bowed left wrist to the ground. Every time I find that the top of the club then is not pointing a 12:00, but instead about 10:30. It dawned on me that, at setup, I would put the club in my left hand, set it to 10:30 to begin with. If I do my backswing, when I get to the top, I'm bowed,. I can check it back on the ground: the club is facing 10:30. So in effect, I am "pre-bowing". This process takes complexity out of the backswing where Johnson sets his wrist to bow. I'm getting lag, a flatter swing, and de-lofted club. All the benefits of bowing. Why wait to the topswing to bow instead of "pre-bowing".?

Eric , I want to thank you for this. I never post comments but what you said about letting the left wrist unhinge down “ulnar deviation” has pretty much cured my shanks that I have been plagued with off and on for about two years. It has allowed me to replicate the feeling I get in my practice swing that I have never been able to achieve consistently when the ball is there. It allows me to get the club head behind me and then pour on the “3 right hands” through impact! I have watched endless videos and you are the first coach I have seen talk about this and make it so simple too! This is a game changer for me! Thank You!

My God this is good. Trying to create "fake lag" a la Sergio circa early 2000s really jacked up my concept and got me into some bad wrist angles and steepness like you mention. The wrist is a complex joint but learning and Just paying attention to how it moves and how that afftects the clubface and shaft angles has been huge for me. Thank you!

No telling how many different golf instruction videos I've watched over the last year, and this is by far the most helpful. I was told many years ago to improve my wrist angles (positions) was to hit a Impact bag guess what i only had one lesson. This same UK coach was awarded 2015 advanced professional golf status this same guy could not hit a golf ball for toffee.when quizzed about certain moments in the swing and causes and when it should happen the answers were poor for not finding the root cause. In the end I asked another golf professional which I knew over the phone what may be the cause he instantly said check your wrist angles in the take away at the top and down swing instant improvement lower ball flights and draws which I never did ,just goes to show a golf coach my have all the tools and gadgets to give the impression he can teach .buy the way fantastic videos keep them coming from the UK.

This helped me immensely and it's really impressive that you can explain it from both viewpoints off both axis with the angles (shallow, lag) to the camera. You have several other videos on shallowing out but is this the most common fault? Your other video says it's the best shallow technique you know with the alignment sticks but it's more focused on the lower half of the down swing and not the top (where us caster/slicers struggle). And we don't see your side view, only back so I got a little disoriented. I guess the only thing confusing the heck out of me is the "letting gravity do the work" part and letting the club fall "into the slot". At the top of my swing I try to let my arms go limp to allow gravity but I know I'm doing it wrong, meanwhile my hips and shoulders are turning so that aspect is holding me up. Sorry for the essay, thanks greats vids

This was awesome thanks Eric! Question- backswing: top coaches (Mike Bender etc) seem to advocate to hinge early in the backswing, and err with a steeper shaft. When trying to do this, as per your video, it seems to create a cupped wrist angle in the backswing. My question to you is: how can you hinge early in backswing, err with a steeper shaft, and yet still have a flat wrist at the top of backswing to set you up for success to get shallow in transition? Hope that makes sense!
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 4 жыл бұрын
You need a decent grip and then you need to GRADUALLY hinge.....too much hinge too much cup....not enough hinge, more bow. The answer is you dont hinge too much. You CANNOT hinge A LOT (maxed out) and have a flat left wrist. These are my thoughts on hinge backswing: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hprGdnp4otqeqqs kzbin.info/www/bejne/fZm6f3mXeNamqZo Left wrist cupped at first parallel, flat by left arm parallel then to top for most.

Better to have a cupped left wrist and a deep back swing at the top. The flattening of the left wrist as a first move promotes an in to out down swing. So many amateurs have trouble with this. Question. Do you subscribe to Harvey Pennicks magic move by intentionally bringing the right elbow down to the rib cage in front of right hip. This is a move I’ve recently incorporated to hit straighter longer shots. Thoughts?

Hey Robert...thanks for the message. We seem to disagree here. Based on my experience coaching and studying I do not think its better to have a cupped left wrist and deep back swing at the top. In terms of bringing the right elbow in front....thats really dependent on the player. In particular their grip and their right arm shoulder internal/external rotation at the top of the backswing. Also depends on their body orientations.

Hi Eric I too thought of simply unhinging my trail hand at the top of my swing and them smacking the ball with the back of my hand as you seem to suggest in this video. And to a certain extent it worked; but when my bowed hand felt the impact of the ball? Ouch! Later I leaned the Hogan did not consciously bowed his trail wrist as pictured in his 5 lessons at all; but the weight of the club head dragging behind was the actual causes of the bowing of the trail hand at impact So how is my swing today at 72? Fantastic and easily repeatable ever single time. How is that? You ask. By simply ignoring my hands and wrist all together and simply flicking my magic trail elbow at the transitional part of my downswing. Wham! My entire body responds and my swing is over at a blink of the eye. And as I look up I see that little ball soaring straight to my intended target. Cheers Try simply flicking your trail elbow at the start of your downswing and I guarantee you will increase accuracy and speed in your own swing. Cheers

George Gankas views this differently. He uses legwork to shallow club and it works without even thinking about it. The idea of bowing wrist while conceptually a good idea leaves a lot to timing and leads to inconsistency because you cannot time the bowing and degree of bowing to be the same every time.On the other hand using legwork lets the club shallow naturally and avoids timing and inconsistency issues. I struggled with this and tired what you recommend. It may work for some, but the legwork was a lot simpler and easier for me.. BTW I love your videos and have found then to be very helpful. Good luck with the website.

Thanks man A couple of thoughts....none of these ARE AT YOU....just for people to see to avoid repeating.. 1. I don't think everyone needs to THINK ABOUT these movements, I'm simply explaining what needs to happen 2. If you can do it with legs, thats perfectly cool 3. A lot a lot a lot of normal amateur golfers (not breaking 80) simply cannot execute or dont have time to work different legwork into their game. Elite level athletes a different ball game 4. That idea that this adds more "timing" is so over played. I see what you're coming from, but how does this add any more timing than the timing of the leg work? 5. The idea in general that using hands "adds timing" is based on no actual facts. Not saying from you, just in general. Show me some facts that says thinking of your hands adds timing? 6. Making ONLY YOUR PIVOT shallow the shaft....show me anyone doing that with 75% of golfing population that shoot 90 or more? Love George, love his stuff.....show me the people shooting 100? What kind of players does he coach? Have to keep that in mind 7. And lastly, this video is just for people to understand the concepts, doesnt mean anyone has to think about it....BUT THEY SURE CAN.

I have had just the opposite experience. I get much better contact by bowing my wrist to shallow. I tried the legwork thing favored by George Gankas, but it requires a measure of fitness that is beyond my level of commitment. I'm old and fat with bad knees. It took me a bucket of balls to figure out how to avoid hooking my golf ball, but after that, it was smooth sailing with Eric's tip.

Leg work and holding the arms up and behind can cause people to get stuck behind and block shots..if you have fast hips push blocks will happen unless you either slow your hip (bad) or bow wrist and drop arms into slot..it looks matched up which GG would agree

Shallowing with leg work doesn't take less timing than bowing the lead wrist. It is a much bigger body movement with much more room for error which is why you see it being practiced so much in GG videos. It's a great move but you also see most of his players with high left arms and across the line to give adequate time for the legs to shallow the club. Lots of different ways to make it work.

Great detailed explanation but what other adjustments does one need to be aware of if bowing the wrist seems to shut the club face at impact causing pulls to left?

All depends on the person but some things you can do to offset that that would align with great ball striking 1. Add more rotation and or right side bend 2. Get the handle more forward 3. Swing direction more inside

@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 5 жыл бұрын
Sure, Randy! I have explained a few times, but not sure if its within any of the videos..here are some benefits that come to mind 1. Gives your body ability to rotate well (steep shaft creates a need to fix that by stalling) 2. Gives your body ability to keep extension/flexion rates of torso (steep same as above) 3. More clubhead speed 4. Shallower angle of attack (contact) 5. Promotes a neutral vertical swing plane (centered contact, not heel or toe) 6. Easier to control club face vs steep requires adjustments 7. Easier to control dynamic loft bc of rotation and pivot pieces mentioned above 7. Higher, farther shots because of angle of attack and dynamic loft control 8. straighter shots because of face control 9. More consistency because of ability to pivot and rotate well Those are a few off the top of my head, hope that helps

Yeah you guys are liking that shallow shaft here like that but looking from here you guys are puking! LMFAO great wording! also this shit is simple its not easy but it's straight forward! to me ideally its common sense once its slowed down and thought about it more. So today I used one of your other videos where you stated that once the shaft is vertical on the back swing it makes it lighter. I used that concept and when I swung it was lighter and to me to get the club back to parallel on my front swing I naturally bowed my wrist and my club head speed was super fast and I crushed the ball with less effort. You have some great videos here and I watched at least 2 hours of your videos last night and it taught me straight forward and simple ideas on getting my swing back on path. Great fucking videos man! Over the last 2 weeks after meeting with my coach and getting my grip back to normal I was cutting my drive to the left everytime but now I feel like its coming back to straight.

Hey Eric. Very interesting. Struggled whole career trying to shallow, usually trying to do the opposite of what you said...What would constitute a casting action in your opinion? I always assumed that early ulnar deviation of the left wrist is part of it, and i still think it is. So my question is what additional factors turn a bowing left wrist that is also ulnar deviating into a casting action? Is it just the bowing that turns a casting action into a shallow lagging action?
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 6 жыл бұрын
1. The idea of a cast being "bad" came from people watching video in 2D not 3D 2. "cast" would be commonly referred to as ulnar deviation, yes 3. Ulnar deviation isn't really the issue 4. Flexion/extension is really the problem 5. IF you BOW and add ulnar deviation ("cast") is a "cast" then bad? 6. We decided a "cast" is a bad thing. We made that up. If you add flexion to it you would look like a tour star

Eric Cogorno Golf That’s great thanks Eric 👍 Know you’ve done another video on this but a tip to anyone out there struggling with this. Totally weaken the pressure in the left hand grip and wrist to where it feels it can’t even lift the club. Feel the swing as a right hand action and the left wrist is free then to bow naturally in reaction to the right hand hinge coming down. My left wrist would never flex coming down even when I tried. Problem was way too much tension in the left wrist.

Eric, can you make head or tail of what Mike Malaska teaches with regards to this? He basically wants to feel the shaft tipping up more vertically with the hands coming straight down and the torso feeling 'closed' while this happens. Essentially the polar opposite of what your saying as far as i can tell. To me, this is as close to flat out wrong as you can get, if we're gonna use the best ball strikers in history as empirical examples. Perhaps you get what he's saying better than i and love to know if you have an opinion?
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah-I think Mike seems like a great guy. Seems like he gets good results so maybe one day I will need to head out and watch him coach some day. I think a key point may be what he wants you to FEEL vs what he actually wants you to do. Getting the shaft vertical and keeping the body closed is simply not what good ball strikers do. Not Eric's opinion....thats a fact. Measured fact many times over. Maybe thats the way he gets people to do what they need to do.....but I don't do it that way. Never have....don't see that changing but who knows?
