It's amazing how much I missed having lived many years in NM. I had good friends in Taos that I often went and visited, but I never did any sight seeing there, never knew any of this history. I did more sight seeing in Santa Fe and down in White Sands than anywhere, but I lived all over NM from age 12 to 40. Now I'm here in MT and love it but I do miss NM too. Thanks for showing me what I missed!❤

As usual, a great and informative video. My son gave me a copy of Bill O’Reilly’s book for fathers day, “Legends & Lies, The Real West”. The book devotes a sizable chapter to Kit Carson. Although I have read a little about him in the past this book really expressed what an interesting and accomplished individual he was. The book is well worth getting and reading for those interested in the old west.

The entire state of New Mexico is like a campers dream land, esp near Santa Fe NF. Valles Caldera, Fenton Lake area and Jemez Mountains area are very scenic and have historical sites. I'm pretty sure they allow remote camping. Bandelier National Historic site is close by and has Indian ruins and is very nice. Bonus while in the area is the National Lab Los Alamos and the Bradbury Museum (telling about the Manhatten Project) is a must see stop in Los Alamos. If not this trip, you will need to put it on your list for a return trip to that whole beautiful and historic area. Love your videos.

All of the rock work on US 64 is brand new. The highway was recently widened in that area. It used to be much narrower until last summer. Love your videos! Safe travels!

I’m a Native New Mexican and a product of generations of DNA exchange, so with one foot in the Indian world and the other in the Hispanic and other white genealogy I value all historical prospectives as; if you haven’t walked in their shoes, then don’t be too quick to pass judgement! I just love you channel 👍🏽 I watched a little more of this video and listened to your archeological assessments of different observed areas and I offer that the white satiny coating on some of the rocks you were finding appears to be opalized chalcedony (a quartz matrix- Opaque in appearance). Closely related to agate and jasper. From your description of where you camped near Cuba, NM (Jemez Mountains) you are on the outer rim of the Valles Caldera volcanic field and obsidian is very prevalent in that area.

I don't think I've ever watched an UNinteresting video from you, but this one was that much more interesting than most! I've always known who Kit Carson was but never really knew much about his personal life until now. It was worth a dive, before, and even moreso now. Too, as we age we find we have more empathy for those brave souls who literally pioneered our country. And you are so right - "never judge a man without first walking in his moccasins" (to hamfistedly paraphrase an old adage to better fit the emptymindedness of the misfits who scream so loudly today). Bah. My mood might be better if I hadn't just purchased a poor batch of roasted coffee... yick. Why can't these well-known roasters be as consistent as they used to be? I digress. @@gonagain A good decision and good luck with one great woman prevents fair-to-middlin decisions/luck with several others, where the chances of running into truly problematic ones is an added risk. I almost pulled off the former, but ended up closer to the latter. As you say in this video, though, Rick and I should not judge each other without having been in each other's shoes. I'm no longer convinced that one path or the other is the more desirable one to have ended up on. Not that I recommend a divorce, or breakups from any serious attempt at a permanent relationship, as being fun. Nor can I advocate for relationships which never even reached that stage. Yet, any experience which doesn't kill you, makes you stronger and wiser. I keep telling myself that, and trying to convince myself it's not a case of sour grapes over (just barely) missing the original goal.

We learned in school Kit Carson was not very kind to native American tribes, I recall how he killed and sold native American scalps. As for insects well Pyrethrum is one of the oldest natural insecticides.

It was often kill or be killed, no phone to call the sheriff. History is often twisted by people that want to sell a book or that have their own reason to twist it and be a victim or claim others were always the victim. The Parks service has a reader board that says the word buffalo came from a native word, considering buffalo goes back at least to the Greek and was in all european languages because there was european buffalo and water buffalo it would mean that someone had to get that native word over 3,000 years ago and take it back to Greece, India and Egypt. Sadly that conflicts with other "facts" so we always must be careful of what agenda someone has when they teach about history.

It's less of an issue for someone living in Montana, than someone who lives at sea level. Mountain guides in South America tell you to chew on some coca leaves, though of course that's at much higher altitudes, and you'd get in trouble for that here.

It takes us about a day to acclimate to the higher elevations. In the meantime we just take things slow, drink lots of water.

If that was a white crystal in that obsidian flake that came from the Jemez Mountains - there is a large deposit of what is known as Jemez Obsidian where the native americans would travel from all over to collect it for their tools. I so miss that whole area...I'll get back there but I know it is not the same place I grew up in. I'm almost afraid to see all the change of 'modern society'. Were you able to visit Taos Pueblo?

I appreciate your visit to the Kit Carson home in Taos. BUT. Please spend some time on the Navajo reservation speaking to them about their remembrance of the Long Walk deportation where they removed 10,000 and lost 3500 to starvation, desease, and shot by those Kit Carson commanded. Hweeldi, as it is known, was carried out under the command of General Charlton that should be known as nothing less than a form of genecide to the Dine' over one more land grab and hope for gold. Further, Rick and Linda, I live currently where Kit Carson was born, in Richmond, KY. And in addition lived in an adobe home in Alamosa. CO. which he also built as well as establishing Ft. Garland, east of Alamosa. I asked a Navajo weaver at Hubble trading post about Kit Carson, and in the true Navajo way, she went silent. There is a great history at the Hubble Trading post museum concerning Carson and the forced, cruel deportation march and incarceration of the Dine' between 1864-1868 at Ft. Sumner in eastern NM. Hope this clarifies an alternatve view of Carson's place in the "rest of the story."

The Ute and Apache tribes fought the Navahos for centuries and helped the US army with the Long Walk but it is all blamed on one man that likely saved thousands from just being exterminated when he agreed to oversee the job. The Apache would have wiped all Navahos off the earth if they could have. The Navahos also raided down into Mexico and the Mexican government fought them for years, but everything is blamed on one man. History is often twisted to fit victimhood when if the roles had changed the Navahos would have wiped out the Ute and Apache tribes if they could. Kit Carson was noted for stopping violence along the way by others. If he had not gone along the entire tribe may have been wiped out. People try to look at history through their life and we did not live in those times. It is never sensible to look at history through your life experiences as history was WAY different than now.

I've thought a bit about your response about Kit Carson. In my encounters with the current day Navajo, I've been deeply impressed by their response to the Long Walk history and their own. All over the reservation you will find one after another some of the most patriotic displays as proud Americans who have served and volunteered our nation in modern wars worldwide. In all their major festivals and rodeos the American flag is present, front and center. On mesas above even the smallest communities the flag flies proudly. In cemeteries on the graves of their veterans, Old Glory flies. Even with the background of the Long Walk and its terrible memory, the Navajo move forward in a hostile environment and in the difficult modern challenges of poverty, addictions, and social change. They remember but serve. This must be a a great measure of what I have experienced as a great nation of the Dine'. Be sure to visit Hubble Trading Post near Ganado, AZ, and it's museum to read the National Parks system history of the Long Walk of the Navajo people. I think it is a fair and complete read of the experience for the Dine'. I seriously doubt that Kit Carson would be considered a "friend."

Daniel Boone was said to have killed lots of Indians. But Boone said that he only killed one. And was remorseful for doing that.

The publications in the east built these men up by stretching the truth to sell newspapers and magazines. Kit Carson also had a major problem with that.

it's ridiculous to judge people from a 100-200 years etc by todays standards, just think what they would have done back then to some of the nutjobs of today, heck what some countries would do to todays nutjobs in this day and age

Let's not forget that Carson was a participant in two massacres of native women and children. Carson has also been charged with genocide of the Navajo. American hero? I don't think so.

Don't forget the Navahos kidnapped and killed thousands of Ute and Apache, they also raided into Mexico for centuries killing them. The Navahos would have wiped the Ute and Apache tribes out if they could, the Ute and Apache tribes were involved in the long walk and they likely would have exterminated the Navahos if Carson had not taken the job. He was noted for stopping soldiers and other tribes from attacking the Navahos, he may have been there when some were exterminated but he was noted by the army as stopping the attacks. History is often rewritten for victimhood, the Navahos would have wiped out all of the Ute if they had a chance. Looking at history from a modern day lis not sensible, history was nothing like we live now.
