We finally escaped the Montana chill and headed SE to the Black Hills of South Dakota in search of the perfect boondocking campsite. We're testing out a new style receiver hitch from Citymons and will be reporting on that soon, but I show it in this video. Is there pie in this video? You bet!!!

Yes, my father had lens replacement surgery, and the first thing he noticed was the vividness of colors. He was astonished by the beauty of the world; even the paint on his home's walls, which he believed to be light brown, turned out to be bright white. I hope Linda is also enjoying these newfound differences. The process for my father was lengthy. After the lens replacement, he underwent laser surgery for an eye pressure issues. It's been six months now, as the appointments are quite spread out, and they operate on only one eye at a time. He has one more surgery to go.

The part that struck a chord with me during this video is you talking about showing up a campsites in the dark and having to cook in the dark. I also learned a long time ago to get an early start on moving days and I'm even more worried than you about beginning my search by two or three in the afternoon when I start going down dirt roads to find a spot. There's enough other things that can go wrong traveling around a lot like this without having to worry about not having a campsite by dark. I understand also in the winter when it gets dark early it's sometimes hard to be cooking before it's dark but I don't like having my meals after 5:00pm or 6:00pm at the latest and I don't like cooking in the dark or setting up my camp in the dark. It's just a simple way of hedging ones bets in order to have an enjoyable and relaxing time camping regularly in nature. To throw kids in the mix and put them through that is another level completely I appreciate your concern and I also could not watch that kind of thing for very many times in a row.

Hi. Rick & Linda, Good Morning to Ya. I love walking in the woods same as you. Never know where I'm going, just keep on exploring. My father had the love of camping and traveling and that is how I got bitten by the bug. For me, there is Nothing Better than setting up camp, then start to hike n explore and even if it's in a familiar place just do it again. I guess I'm a Simpleton at heart. When I have selected a definite campground destination, I usually leave at O-dark thirty, try to arrive about 9am. I have found that most folks break camp/leave for their next destination between 9am and 11am. Watch folks pack up/leave then pounce on the campsite. Also, late evening arrival cooking, light draws bugs to the camp table food. And a few times, I have seen bears stroll into others cooking/clean up after 9pm. Although beer and cigars around the campfire seem to deter them from our site. HAHAHA! Early dinner and done by 6pm (summer) allows ample time for evening fishing, especially good fly fishing. Then clean and ice the fish for next morning breakfast!

When you are younger and have limited time off, you have to plan and follow the plan. The farther you want to go, the more in a hurry you are. I remember them days. My wife and I went out west way back when, and if she hadn't won over a hundred dollars in Vegas, we would have run out of gas money before we got home. When gas was less than $2 a gallon.

Hey Rick..it depends on whether I'm traveling or spending time in a specific area. If traveling..I'll usually have an idea of where I want to be the next day. I'll also have back up plans in case that doesn't work out..a good example is if you're planning on a rest area and some are closed. Happened to me in California..there were no rest areas open for over 100 miles and then the one that was open had no room. That pie looked amazing ! 😁😋👍

We really enjoy that area, and love staying in the town of Custer when we visit the Black Hills. We don't camp, but we'd be boondocking almost exactly where you guys were if we had a camper. A short trip gets you to all the historical and tourist sites, and the town is sleepy and friendly. And I am a huge fan of the DeLorme Atlas & Gazeteers, but I also highly suggest the Benchmark Road & Recreation Atlas, which is available for each state. The free BLM maps available at BLM, Forestry Service, and G&F offices are another great resource. It's easy to get into areas with no cell coverage here in northern Wyoming (Big Horn Mountains are just a couple miles from me), and many of the apps don't work without them barrrrrrs on the phone, so paper maps are king. Have fun, you two, and thanks for sharing!

Good morning Rick, Wow, that hitch is pretty slick! I like it. There is a place in Rapid City, SD called Sickies Garage, they have really good hamburgers! It's right next to Cabela's. They have one burger there called a Hangover, and it is very good! I put the B.F. Goodrich Commercial T/A tires on my truck in 2020 while in Willcox, Arizona. They're wearing great, still plenty of thread on them. And I can put 80# of air in them for towing. That pie looked great! Safe travels guys. God bless. JT

Looks like a hamburger patty Linda is cooking with onions, we buy some pre-cooked burger patties from Sams Club that are really good and my wife defrosts them in the microwave and then heats them up in the skillet even though instructions says heat in microwave, these might be a good choice when you're traveling as are quick to cook, we also buy them from our Grocer, HEB Grocery, they have their store brand also pre fully cooked and are really good to we can buy 2,3 or 4 oz patties , we get the 4 oz and she makes them like Linda is with onions and then makes a gravy and once gravy is ready outs the already caramelized and heated patties back in the gravy to simmer together and with a potato makes a great meal

Thank you for the advice. We are taking our 13' Scamp from Montana to southern Illinois this summer to visit family. We are off grid NW Montana campers, so not used to the humidity. We have a Zero Breeze portable ac which does great cooling down the bedroom space, but not convinced how it will do in humid environments. I guess we will find out. Lol! After watching your video, we ordered a Shocker Hitch, and are anxious to try it out. It was crazy expensive. We are always towing something, so we took the leap. Also, we ordered one of those water bottle pump thingies. Hmmm?! Maybe we need to quit watching your channel because you are costing us a lot of money! Lol...Just kidding. Like you I grew tired of the noise and rough ride and always slightly out of balance characteristics of the KO2s. Also I think I will go Endurance tires on my Jayco Hummingbird this time. That is a very good tire, and they go a long way. My 2018 Chevy Colorado crewcab 4x4 had them, and when I sold it they had 60K and were still good. I did a lot of camping with that truck and pulled a trailer. When I cook if it doesn't come in a can it's no good. 🤣I love those large map books. I don't remember if you have ever tested one but have you ever tried those little 12V swamp coolers for cooling a small space? It was all we had when I was a kid in my parent's house in North Hollywood, CA, and they work well in the dry climate. That pie looks great.

A good pilot wants to always know whereabouts they are above the earth. I apply the same logic to land (pie directed) and water travel. I have the Mickey Thompson Baja Boss Rugged AT. They are incredibly quiet, yet, a pretty aggressive tread pattern. They are wearing quite well and have a 6yr/50K warranty and the 3peak mountain snowflake rating

Hi Rick & Linda, We're now on the road full-time, so we're wondering about the water tester you mentioned in this video. Which one is it, please? Great video by the way 👍

rick your going to find out the wrangler tires are junk, in sand or mud the tires cake up in the center treads and the outside doesnt do its job correctly, these tires are most often , stock tires from the factory, a THROW AWAY TIRE, the traveling you do needs a true offroad tire, i use a larger tires in size, due to the rim size 20" , but install i will always have cooper discover 2 m/s tire, these tires ALWAYS CLEAN THEMSELFS OFF AND THERES NEVER TIRE NOISE ON OR OFF THE ROADS,! i run a 305/50/20 i know its not much for the offroad due to the small side walls , but i ve never got stuck in sand, mud or any terrain out there, i swear by COOPER TIRES,

What is the name of that little water test you used? What all dose it check for ?
@gonagain
@gonagain Ай бұрын
It's made by Kactoily and the main things that it tests for is TDS (total desolved solids) and TOC (total organic carbon) the TDS is going to be everything from minerals to chemicals and the higher is the more leary you need to be about water quality. TOC is where the bacteria will be and the accepted level is very low. The tester tells you in both color code and an actual readout of the findings. We're currently on the road and I'm using it a lot at the various faucets we refill at.

You can buy them after you download an app for some or you have to call on your phone for others. Checking their website before going would be wise.

Well pre staged and they do it for more views, cheap rv living channel is one such person. I watched the dude park, set up record a video then left and he was less than 300 meters from the freeway.

Since you are on Federal land all the time, you should be aware that the USFS is trying to ban all lead ammo and fishing gear on them. GOA has filed a suit and right now is also fighting the ATF New Rule which will make you a criminal if you sell a gun. Not sure you are aware of both of those. The New Rule goes into effect May 20th unless they get an injunction. If you aren't a GOA member you should be. They are the main organization fighting for our rights.

We weren't aware of the lead and fishing gear one. Geeze, are they going to remove all the lead from the ground? Ridiculous. Thanks for the news, Jim.

@@gonagain They secured a 2-week injunction against the new rule. Not sure what that is going to do. Yes, as you know, lead is found everywhere in the soil. They are working towards a nationwide ban on lead. They hold the condor thing up as to why we should do it. What they don't say is that after 50 years, the condors still have the same lead levels in their blood. I'm pretty sure they aren't eating 50-year-old lead-shot meat.
