That weekend was rough. I was a 9 year old in Martinsville that weekend at my second ever race, and I vividly remember the fog on race morning as well as on Saturday morning. I was with my grandpa and he even mentioned how he thought teams might have a hard time getting in because they flew in. What hit me the most was when the news broke at the track that a HMS plane was missing, and seeing the solemn look on a lot of fans faces, I knew things were very bad for being such a young age. A few hours later on the way home, my grandpa and I stopped at a Wendy’s in West Virginia, where we ran into some other race fans who broke the news to us that the plane was found.

Kyle Busch has gone on the record as saying that Ricky was the go between between himself and Rick. Ricky got along with and understood Kyle better than anyone else there. Ricky would often smooth things over between Kyle and Rick. He thinks that had Ricky not passed so early that he could have likely spent more time at Hendrick. Can you imagine that? He was on the verge of winning a championship when he left. How many more might he have? Also where might Dale Jr. land after he left DEI? Could have completely changed the sport.

It was interesting listening to Kyle Busch talk about why he left Hendrick in 2007 to join JGR in 2008. He explained that Ricky Hendrick was the person in the team he got on with best, his go between between himself and Rick Hendrick himself. It turned out that Rick Hendrick wasn't really his guy and not at all the same generation and thought process. As such, after Ricky was killed in that plane crash, it had an unforeseen consequence of Rick Hendrick misreading/misunderstanding, whatever it was, Kyle Busch. The way Kyle Busch described it, it implied that after Ricky died, coupled with Kyle being a bit rough around the edges emotionally at first, made him feel unwanted at Hendrick. So when he left in 2007, he thought his career was over, but Joe Gibbs kept calling him, "Courting him," as Gibbs put it, and this feeling of being wanted and appreciated played a part in him joining Joe Gibbs from the following year, leading to the most successful part of his career (8 wins in 2008 alone and later the 2015 and 2019 Cup Series Championships)

His timeline remodeled Truck Series: 2001-2002 Hendrick Motorsports Busch Series: 2003-2005 Hendrick Motorsports Cup Series: 2006-2023 Hendrick Motorsports In 2006, he would still become a car owner for Hendrick Motorsports #5 car in the Busch Series now the Xfinity Series then he would own the Hendrick Motorsports #5 car in Cup Series in 2024 and finally, he would become the owner of Hendrick Motorsports once his dad retires.

Who knows how dominant Hendrick Motorsports could've been had Ricky Hendrick escaped that plane crash? You take a look at the young drivers of today that Ricky could've scouted and developed... Zane Smith Kyle Larson (currently in Ricky's 5 car) Ryan Blaney Christopher Bell Erik Jones Ross Chastain Tyler Reddick Joey Logano John Hunter Nemechek ...the list goes on and on. Ricky still could've scouted out the current trio of Elliott, Bowman and Byron, but Hendrick would've had Larson ready to take over the 24 (later taking the wheel of the 5) after Gordon retired, Elliott would come next after Khane leaves (he'd take over the 5 first, then swap with Larson), then take your pick of Bowman, Byron, John Hunter, Chastain, Reddick for the 88 after Junior with anyone else out of that group to take over the 48 after Johnson retired. Imagine this driver lineup: 5 - Larson 9 - Elliott 24 - Byron/Bowman/JHN/Chastain/Reddick/Blaney (leaning toward Bowman) 48 - Again, take your pick of Byron/JHN/Chastain/Reddick
