Can you imagine what a tourist attraction that 40 acre lot would be today with all those vintage sets?! Better than Disneyland, in my opinion!👍🏼😊

My older brother worked for Desilu in the mid 60's. He lived on the back lot taking care of the animals used in a tv series called "The Greatest Show on Earth" starring Jack Palance. My younger brother and I used to visit the lot. There were many old sets there including " The Greatest Story Ever Told", a western set and an old set from" The Story of G.I Joe" from 1945. I have about a dozen pictures we took in the back lot from one of our visits.

@@jennifursun3303 The sets for King Kong and some other films were burned down by the studio in 1939 to film the burning of Atlanta. Then they built new sets in their place to be Atlanta. Then they filmed the rest of Gone With the Wind. The Atlanta sets became Mayberry in 1960 for The Andy Griffith Show. Then, in the 1970's, all of the sets were torn down and the studios sold the backlot to commercial developers.

Love this!!!!!! Thank you. I recently went to Jonesboro, GA where the remaining boards of Tara are. Today, I found the original door knob to the front door of Tara. It was sold for over $8,000.00. Wish I could buy everything from the movie, and recreate the 40 acre backlot with the original Tara facade, all the Atlanta buildings plus actors' costumes, and every single prop in the movie. All I have is a letter that Olivia de Havilland wrote to me, a program from the 1939 premiere, a copy of the book that I got from the bookstore at the Margaret Mitchell house in Atlanta. I've been a fan since 1967 when I first saw it on the big screen. Such a huge, HUGE fan. Since I live in So CAL I MUST get up to the former 40 Acres backlot and see what is left. I just want to be where all those actors once stood (well, kind of). I want to look up at Baldwin Hills, like I'm sure they did while filming. I know Vivien Leigh, Clark Gable and Olivia de Havilland lived in bungalows right behind Soundstage Stage 11 that were built just for them. I think they're still there. I'd love to take a tour of the studio too. So much to see. Bucket list for sure. Seeing the two museums in Atlanta was wonderful too. Plus, Margaret Mitchell's grave, the spot where they had the movie premiere (Lowe's Theatere has since been torn down) etc. etc.

Jordan, I love your vlog!! Thanks so much for this one. I grew up in L.A. in the late 1940's, fifties, and sixties. When I recently moved back there, taking care of my parents for 7 years, I visited many old haunts from my childhood (just before the building of the freeways and ex-urban sprawl; It was paradise). In about 2005, Lasky Mesa, at the end of Victory Blvd. in the Valley, had just been opened to the public. Location shooting on GWTW, The Charge of the Light Brigade, and scores of other films was done there for decades. So, I've read in Roland Flamini's book about the making of GWTW and in other places that Scarlett's Oath was filmed at Lasky Mesa at dawn. You state that it was filmed at the 40 acres back lot in Culver City. What is the story on this, if you know? Or have you discovered the actual location after years of mis-information being published? Thanks!!

My cousins husband grew up in a neighboorhood that ran on the backside of culver studios. He said back then (50 and 60's) the studio would use the neighboorhood for filming and leased cars from residents. As i write this i am watching a marathon of My Three Sons. Hey Jordan the Lion, I'm not new to your video blogs, but I am newly subscribed and bell notified, so YEAH! Anyhoo, I'm guessing you already know this, but if not maybe this will be worth a mention for any comment readers. You mentioned Star Trek, and there are at least a couple episodes where they used the town of Mayberry for the show. Maybe the most famous is the episode titled "Miri" where the Mayberry set was dressed to resemble a largely dilapidated and abandoned town, it's a good episode, and if I'm not mistaken the girl that played Miri was the female lead in John Wayne's 1969 film True Grit. I think so anyway. Also there's another episode with Joan Crawford (Episode: The City On The Edge Of Forever) where they pass in right in front of Floyd's Barber Shop, it's kind of a cool footnote to the 40 acres story and how the studio found many ways to use those sets in unique ways. BTW, Floyd must have been on vacation that day cause he's no where to be found. You heard it here third!

The burning of Atlanta scene was done before they built the sets for Gone With the Wind. They burned the old sets then built the sets for Atlanta where the old sets stood. Then they shot the rest of the movie. They tell about this in the documentary "The Man Who Made Gone With the Wind". The reason the Tara set was so blackened is because it had been allowed to deteriorate over the years. By the time they dismantled it, the set was falling down, and big pieces of the walls were missing.

Great job. Good research. As a 52 year resident of Culver City I can vouch for your info. Until recently I lived on Lucerne Ave. which was the western border of 40 Acres. Now I live in the house that I grew up in on Segrell Way in Culver City. The house is on the edge of the former runway of what was Baker Field/Culver City Airport. This was a very important airport at the time. It occasionally housed the Good Year blimp and was build before Hughes Airport. Culver City was the actual place where most movies were made, not Hollywood. There was a rivalry concerning that for years that actually ended with a burying the hatchet ceremony. This town has a seriously rich and colorful history. Again, great job showing a small slice of it.

I admit -- you semi beat me to the punch, so I applaud you :) GWTW is also one of my favorite movies and I've been planning an extensive video about 40 Acres.
