Perhaps the finest percussionist I have ever had the pleasure to work with. A true professional whose mission is to not only play excellently, but also instruct fully. Just excellent.

If you are playing a gong in a solo setting, you might get away with your simple idea. In an ensemble setting, however, it requires incorporating of more detailed and expertise in order to resolve ensemble issues. and from this video, it is clear that Mr. Grover is speaking from the orchestral standpoint. So if you are going to talk about the history of this beautiful instrument, I suggest you go find other videos to yell at.

If you simply hit the gong, you're not playing it flawlessly.

Only difference for Orchestral playing is warm it up and then hit it.

Oh but I am. I understand the Chinese roots of the instrument and the true intended sound of the instrument. It is a instrument meant to played by all people and an elitist perspective of the technique shows that you do not understand the true method

Actually, I can flawlessly execute any piece of gong repotoire. My point is that it's not a difficult instrument like the violin or piano. It's a very western approach to overanalize the technical process. You simply hit it. Don't try to gain respect by complicating the act.

What a perception to have. I hope you are not a percussionist aspiring to be professional. All of our instruments have profound philosophies and requires much more responsibilies than just "hitting the thing".

I wouldn't go so far as to describe the gong as a "beautiful instrument" You could say it's a nice effect at best. It only has one sound. If you go on stage and try to perform a solo piece of music on the gong people would leave.
