My favorite Gong Li movie is "Curse of the Golden Flower". She's such a wonderful actress and so beautiful. She plays tragic characters so well. Even if the character is a wicked b*tch like Hatsumomo in "Memoirs of A Geisha", she makes you feel some type of sympathy for them 💛💛💛

It’s not the Hollywood movies that makes her an international icon, it’s those early movies she did with Chinese legendary director Zhang Yimo, such as: To live, Raise the red lantern, Ju Dou, Red Sorghum. Farewell my concubine. Although some of them censored and temporarily banned in China, they gained great recognition internationally.
@pepelepew12277 ай бұрын
this channel got a lot of facts so laughably wrong in the eyes of anyone who can read mandarin (taiwanese, singaporeans, the rest of southeast asia etc). gong li shot to fame as the eye candy in early hongkong movies before gradually maturing to serious roles. a few of her movies were partially censored due to eastern conservative culture (also has a reputation of frequently changing lovers) but i dont recall many political bans with the exception of to live. she was boycotted for wearing a brand (adidas) which took part in denouncing xinjiang (ps: i have been to urumqi the capital and know the truth) but her gigs in china (event judges, modelling, ads etc) every year proves that she was never blacklisted, even skipping her first singapore citizenship ceremony due to a china gig ..... which she renounced a decade later anyway after divorcing her singaporean husband (china does not allow dual nationality).
@adaoramadike35434 ай бұрын
Zhang Yimou, I have seen all the films she did with Yimou back in the 90s and 2000s. She was the first Chinese actress to be a cover girl cosmetics spokes person.
@chezlionel-t6r Жыл бұрын
💛There are rumours, here, in China that Gong Li has reclaimed her Chinese citizenship, in order to film again in China. I had the privilege to play a few scenes in the Volleyball movie " Leap" in 2019 and talk to her on set. She was extremely nice and courteous, praising us, small roles, for being part of the project. I played the referee of the match against Brazil-Chinal in the 2012 Olympics.
@pepelepew12277 ай бұрын
you've to remember that china does not allow dual nationality and she gave up singapore citizenship after divorcing her singaporean husband. hard to believe she was ever banned from the entertainment industry in china considering the numerous gigs and luxury brand endorsements every year. dont take my word it, just verify

💛 love her. I watch mostly Korean, Chinese, Thai, movies a lot. I watch less of American stuff too! Raunchy and foul language all the time. I watch a lot of black and white classic movies too! Thank you Karine for this video.
@Wmuthoni Жыл бұрын
American movies have suffered because of poor writing and not necessarily foul language, raunchiness or violence in the content (huge Quentin Tarantino fan). There are many American movies and series that do not have these raunchy aspects yet they fall flat due to poorly written plots that have a major impact on the actor’s role in character development. A good example is the Witcher where Season 1 was on point in the casting, plot and character development but by the time we get to Witcher Origins its gone downhill coz of poor writing in spite of the great cinematography. It’s also the same with the recent Harry Potter franchise, the Fantastic Beasts movies despite of their great cinematography have not been successful due to ego and poorly written subplots. Fantastic Beasts has also had a great casting but since their character development was poorly written the actors appear stifled and monotone at best. The complexity of human emotions is by far better written into the plots of Asian series and the actors have to be really talented to produce even the subtleties hints for the viewers to pick on which appears to be lacking in many recent Hollywood films.

@Wmuthoni Жыл бұрын

I recommend Red Sourghum [if it's available] as one of Gong Li's finest performances [among many]. Warning: It has some very horrifying scenes. The basic story I will quote a description from imdB [internet movie database]: " When a leprous winery owner in 1930s China dies a few days after his arranged marriage, his young widow is forced to run the winery to make a living while contending with bandits, her drunkard lover, and the invading Japanese army." The parts of the film that R difficult are when the Japanese invade the area & stay on the red sorghum farm & force Gong Li's character to continue making wine for the Japanese to drink but torture several of her workers in the most horrendous ways imaginable. I had never heard of such things other than horrifying medieval tortures [think "The Tudors" or Idi Amin in "The Last King of Scotland or the Nazis] So if you have a weak stomach for the unthinkably cruel inhumanities some evil men inflict upon other humans, you may want to skip this movie although Gong Li [& entire cast] is magnificent as is the direction by the brilliant Yimou Zhang [long-time collaborator w Gong Li]. {{PS I love your videos Karine! Brava!}}
