My old Geography teacher gave me a couple of Gong LP's in the early 80's.. He was concerned about the way kids were going, this LP was paired with 'YOU' and also Aerosol Grey Machine by VDGG.. Stunning time in my life. Thanks old Geography teacher. i remember you.

I've been a fan of Gong for over 40 years. Saw them first at Glastonbury in 1981. Make no mistake, they were outstanding musicians who made great, original, uncompromising music with humour and psychedelia blended into their inimitable style.

Extrodianery. Back in my high school days i was secretly into the radio gnome invisible trilogy. My friends already thought i was weird enough listening to genesis, gentle giant, king crimson etc. They would of never understood gong! And now i finally get to actually see wht the band was about. Love it...but dont tell my wife. Lol.

Funny, I had the same issues…back in 1972, I was 10, I heard Hawkwind for first time, and instantly was hooked…..all the while my friends were into in my opinion, awful radio pop….I got into Gong around 1977….said friends now into either punk or disco….I heard I think Angels Egg…my older sister had that album….I loved it…..by the time 1979 arrived, I had bought every Gong album, even odd cassettes from Ottersongs in Devon….bought any Daevid Allen music I could……I loved it all…..but nobody I knew back then enjoyed my music……now age 61, still into Hawkwind and Gong…..now said wife shows zero interest…..ugh…..we are a rare bunch….hehe

They were such a creative band with no real boundaries , So nice to see Pierre looking healthy & playing as he did not many drummers were in his caliber then & now & it was a joy to see Steve Hillage loose as a goose & playing great guitar , he was so underrated then & now he plays dance music but he should have never stopped doing what the did after leaving GONG & going solo . Such a fun band with all top level musicians & well what can you say about David Allen other than he an original player with some uncanny ideas that all worked . Shame i don't speak French so other than the vocals i don't have a clue what they are talking about . Great Post . As a guitarist myself i have tried hard as hell to find anything on Steve's Strat like what year it was & his Les Paul with the odd fret markers up near the 12th fret . Beautiful instrument but quite the impossible task of finding out anything about either guitars . He is still underrated as hell . I bought the Rockpalast DVD he did with Colin Bass on Bass & the great Clive Bunker from Jethro Tull playing the hell out the drums . Amazing show even if it's not the crazy world of his days with Gong.

For english speakers, I did a translation. Rock En Stock - Gong - 18.09.1973 RES (RockEnStock): Oh, here comes “Rockenstock” a special Gong in Paris and at Sens, with many weird things. The band “Gong” exists, in France, since many years. And despite, everyone thought it was a British band; and now you decided to leave for England, to leave this magical forest, and to go see somewhere else. Why? DA (Daevid Allen): Because it is time… it is time to do it… this is life… this is the moment… […] we will see. RES: And what is going to happen over there? Because, if the French thought “Gong” was an English band, the brits will surely think that “Gong is a French band. DA: Well yes, that’s true. But in fact, every where we go, people think we are from ermmm.. so we are from somewhere else. Actually, we are from another planet. There always is something mysterious with a band, these people we see appearing on stage, make a lot of noise, and then go away; and everyone knows, for sure, that they don’t live like the rest of us. In the present case, with the Gong, with an aussie, Daevid Allen, one of the founding member of Soft Machine, with a few French and brits, things can only get weirder. So here they are at home, close to Sens, in this house where they decided to live, where they have all their gear - their electric instruments, their van - their dogs, their wives, their kids; and Gong, it’s not only their music, it’s also, what we are going to see tonight in this episode of Rockenstock. Daevid Allen is an Australian, and Didier Malherbe is French - the first to join the band - who used to be jazz musician, and choose the rock path, because that’s what he liked. And I think he is perfectly happy in the band. You will hear him talk about it. DM (David Malherbe): Here, it’s “The Pavillon”; it’s a little be haunted… a little bit haunted because it hasn’t been inhabited for twenty years. And when we came here there was an aura… a haunted aura around it. We would say: the castle, the pavillon, the manor… DA: The chalet! DM: The Chalet! And everyone had a funny feeling. And now, on the contrary, everyone feel very… very safe. DA: there were some hippies there. DM: some hippies, they are upstairs; it’s ok. No problem. The day begins when we come out of the dream, each one in his own bedroom. DA: no, no! The awakening is the contrary! ?: it’s when we enter the dream. DA: yes, we come out of reality and we enter the dream. DM: so we enter the dream. So, some do yoga first, some make love first… some eat, some go in the forest to practice their instrument, some go back to sleep as soon as they’ve opened an eye; everyone is different, everyone has his mode. We live just like bees. RES: But bees don’t eat salad. DM: well we have every animals anyway, we have every animals… but, here, the house, it’s like bees: we work non-stop… DA: That’s not true. DM: that’s not true? DA: But it’s good to say this to the TV: yes, that’s true, we work a lot here, yes. DM: from morning… DA: to late in the evening. And even after that. Me, I start on the evening up to the morning. RES: What are you working on? DA: Sorry? RES: What are you working on? Music, or the vegetables? DA: Life here is like, the school of life, in this house. It’s a school of life. And also a kind of psychiatric hospital for musicians. [music] RES: So, is it complicated to live in a community? ?: yes… oh yes! DM: what? DA: no, not at all, not at all. DM: it’s not difficult? ?: and it’s difficult… it’s both blended together DA: it’s more difficult to live alone ?: that’s for sure RES: is it more difficult to live in a community with money, or without money? ?: without money it’s difficult, with money it’s difficult too. DA: I don’t agree, it’s much more difficult to live alone with no money. DM: or than with friends and money! DA: yes, that’s ture. DM: and Daevid, would you like to live in a community with 150 persons? DA: no, I don’t like communities. Personally, I like to live alone, absolutely. Communities are difficult. When there’s no money, it’s a t6housand time harder to live alone than in a community; that’s what I said, right? DM: yes, that’s it. RES: when you’ll be rich you’ll live alone, then? DA: I will never be rich, I swear! RES: when you’ll be rich you’ll throw them out? DA: no, impossible: I don’t want to be rich, and I don’t believe that anyone here is going to be rich, never. RES: for the money, how does it work? DA: oh, for the money, wait… how does it work… well, it means, all the money that comes in goes to someone who’s willing to take the responsibility of the distribution. So that’s something. Because there never is enough money to buy everything everyone wants. So, this person - this poor person who takes the responsibility… RES: who is it? DA: currently it’s always changing. Currently it’s Pierre [….?] himself. And he is good, because a drummer is more… bang, definitive, there’s no dispute. So if I want a pack of cigarettes, or a small bottle of shampoo because I want to clean my hair… RES: of “sahmpoing”? DA: of “shampooing”, sorry. RES: not of champagne; people will understand “champagne”. DA: really? Well I’ll put some champagne in my hair, or my hair in the champagne. He says: NO! and I go: Bwaahh! I need my champagne to clean my hair. He says: not possible. So the next one comes: I want two duck eggs. NO! not possible! So there’s always someone who does a list, every day, for groceries. So, if we live naturally, that means, if we spent like we wish, it’s about 250 francs a day. But there never is 250 francs a day! There never is 250 francs a day. We have between 80 and 150 francs. So here is the problem. RES: This is a flying tea pot. Original. DM: it’s a band of musician who live together, because they… it’s more practical, easier. But we didn’t decide to form a community or anything, we’re doing our music and we live outside Paris because it’s better… RES: why do you live outside Paris? DM: because we couldn’t do it in Paris. Because of the neighbors; we have to be calm, we have to feel outside on the planet Gong. We have to make it, to shape it. DA: the plant Gong, what is the planet Gong? It’s the planet of ecstasies. We are guided by this planet; everything we do is guided by this planet. So that’s why we named this band: the Gong. Because of this planet. So, the guides, we call ourselves the Octavian doctors. It’s an intelligence that is neither physical - it has no body; it’s not terrestrial at all, actually, it’s invisible. And we make contact with these Octavian doctors , because otherwise, it doesn’t work. So it’s very calm. We couldn’t make such music... we couldn’t make such music in the city, that’s not possible. There’s too much noise, it’s polluted, we don’t breath right… We do meditation, we get in touch with the Octavian doctors, and the music comes out; it’s not our music; it’s not his music, or his, or anyone else’s… it’s not his music nor his music, nor my music; it’s the music from the Octavian doctors from the planet Gong. [music] Singer (in French): I’m not often alone, because, you see, I am a pussy with a flat cap. Watch out, I’m going to tear you to pieces; change into a witch and fly on my broom shaft. I am a man tied to a tree. And sometimes I untie myself; I take you in the warmth of my breast, fill you with wild love; take you far away in the sky. RES: how are your relations with the neighboring people? DM: very good! DA: never had a problem… RES: how do they call you? When they talk about you, you know, what do they say: the mads? The musicians, the hippies? Woman: they are respectable people. For sure, why not? RES: that’s all I wanted to know. Woman: very much! You’re not going to make me say things! RES: did you get in contact with them quickly, or was it a bit difficult? DM: always very easy. But with don’t have a lot of contact. Because, first, we want to be left in peace. So we don’t want to get too much known around, with people coming, etc. and… otherwise, really, no problem. Very god. RES: everyone like them, then? Man #1: Yes, everyone! Everyone likes them very much. It’s because they have big hair; that has no importance. There are many who say: oh, they have big hair; but they’re always very nice here. And everywhere they’ve been they paid, we cannot say they did… say, some people go: they have no money; but, yes, they have some. Yes, they have money and they can pay. Man #2: for me, they are very nice people. I never had to complain about them. I’m the gamekeeper. Man #1: I have a grandson, that’s the same: he has his hair down to… well half of his back, so! RES: you are going to miss them when they will be gone, then? Man #1: oh yes, because they throw balls, they do everything around here. Oh yes, they did balls, they did everything, They are very very nice. This episode of Rockenstock was realized by Gilles [Daud?], edited by François Bosque, the sound recording is from Dominique Blanc-Franca[?] and the mixing from Christian Lépicier. Line Producer: Pierre Latèce. DA: soon, we will have to live this house. So, all of you “visionaries”, out there, on the other side of the television, if you have a big house and you want us to live there, and be interviewed by the television and all, then call us, because we need a new house, because this one is going to be sold. RES: write to Pierre Lattèse. DA: Write to Pierre Lattèse. RES: yes, you can indeed write to Rockenstock. The best address is the piece 6436, Maison de la RTF, 116 avenue du Président Kennedy, Paris XVIème.
