As a fellow player who play a lot of Gongsun Zan, I would strongly recommend to kill of Gongsun Du as early as possible. 2 reasons: he will betray you and tool maker gives a lot of industry income

Zhao Yun, courtesy name Zilong, was one of the beasts of the era. The classic Romance of the Three Kingdoms portrays him as the perfect warrior and essentially unbeatable in combat. Excited to see him in this game.

Zhao Yun saved Liu Bei's son Liu Chan (Shu's future emperor) at Chang Ban escape when Liu Bei's wife and son was caught up by Cao Cao's army. He also was a great person with full loyalty I really like him because he's too awesome and doesn't betray like Lu Bu does.

Lmao if that was the case why shu failed 9 campaigns attacking Wei and got decimated by Wu in a battle that lead to Liu bei death. Zhao Yun was amazing and fearless but far from unbeatable in combat.

@@TrueXL the Campaigns against Wei was during the later years when Zhao Yun, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, Ma Chao, Huang Zhong and the mastermind strategist Fa Zheng have all passed away. Shu was starting to crumble from within because jealousy within the military ranks. Wu rarely did anything to Wei and never threatened them either. They had way more population and resource than Shu but Shu achieved more against Wei than Wu did.

Secondly Zhao Yun was directly under Zhuge Liang during the first two Northern expedition which were defeats. Of course Shu had more success against Wei Wu was at an disadvantage the moment Shu stole Jing from them.

@@TrueXL Oh yeah those first two Northern Campaign was defeat because he was given an inferior army to buy time for main Shu army to attack from another front. I believe Zhao Yun was up against Cao Xiu's garrison army which was superior. And yeah Zhao Yun was defeated by Cao Xiu there.

I kinda prefer the factions without faction resource. It's like the old total war games where you didn't have a mechanic making the game easier. If I fill my resource bar my generals and court nobles love me no matter what I do. As Sun Jian I went banish crazy and only after the 5th one did people start to get upset all because my bar was full and it increases satisfaction to a crazy degree. Don't know if that was patched but much prefer a faction that relies on know how and skill

Chris Wilder I haven’t played this yet but that’s an I interesting point I haven’t heard mentioned yet. I guess I assumed the benefits given to factions from their unique resource was not greater than the advantages of non resource factions, or that there were pros and cons to the resource system. But I agree that does sound somewhat overpowered, and not in a way that promotes interesting gameplay if it can be used to simply avoid thinking/planning as much and using less strategy. Maybe to further tune the factions to be more playstyle specific the ones with resources could get penalties associated with that? Like with Cao Cao and his ability to start proxy wars maybe make factions closer to him feel more aggressive towards him in particular and less towards others (as his neighbor they know of his manipulative/dishonorable nature more than the others and distrust and dislike him for it for example), so that way his faction advantage becomes more of a needed factor to survive rather than a luxury giving some over powered benefit when his resource is in abundance... if you don’t focus on building credibility and using it for diplomatic manipulation you will become overwhelmed. Or perhaps lower his ability to field numerous separate armies with an upkeep and loyalty penalty that rises more steeply the more you get (Unlike mort of the other factions, Cao Cao did not have any ancestral family fiefdoms or a commandary that was rightfully his to command from which to levy loyal soldiers, but was well liked in his home town where he fled to after his failed attempt to murder The Tyrant)so the game could represent that by saying beyond his first army it becomes difficult to find troops to fight out of loyalty and rather they become more mercenary natured, and so justify the steep upkeep/loyalty penalties. Again this would steer the player towards using diplomatic manipulation and proxy wars out of special necessity as well as for luxury/advantage.

@@briancline7349 Proxy wars would need to be a WHOLE lot stronger before that would matter. Keep in mind there are lots of Han settlements around, most everyone starts at war with the Han and may well never peace them out, the Han have weak armies and NEVER recruit troops, and the AI usually chooses its targets based on what it thinks its army can handle easiest. Most AIs also won't hesitate to declare on 4 or 5 people at once also, so even if by chance they don't have any soft Han targets nearby they may well declare on a one-county guy and eat him rather than attack the target you want them to. My experience with proxy wars so far is that 9 times out of 10 the AI just ignores it unless it was going to attack that person sometime soon anyway. It lets you do something really brilliant once per campaign basically, which is cool but not enough to bend an entire faction around. Playing against Cao Cao is about the same. He doesn't single the player out for abuse, and when he does proxy war you, it's not usually that big of deal. Several times it's been someone I've never even met, and waiting a handful of turns just doing whatever I was going to do anyway I ended up getting paid for peace with them, never having seen a single army.

actually scythia was by the time still strong, the sarmatians came to dominance around 100 b.c.e and the only main difference is the weapon type, the sarmations use four meter long spears while scythians use the cimmerian bow as main weapon. many people who just read wikipedia and no real historian books say scythia was divided much, but actually the scythians were divided in a few large kingdoms according to herodotus, inscriptions and modern historians, which were overruled by a great king.the pontocaspian steppe was host to the main tribe, royal scythia, being one kingdom, so actually it is much more accurate in rome 1 than with the mods and rome II that split it into several factions, actually many factions in rome I were historically only divided in two or three main factions or coalitions

I have a question since I don’t own this yet, when what appears to a settlement but sounds like it’s just one building (like the “iron mine of PF Chang or something 😉), does that it mean that it is like the settlements in Warhammer where you have happen to get access to a special trade resource building, an iron mine in this case, or is it just an iron mine building and nothing else? Do all small settlements with access to a special resource building, or a special building like pastures, get a name indicating that? Also I still vote for Kong Rong next, it would be nice for you to add variety by covering one of the less popular/covered factions (but one that still has a decent amount of people interested in it), and he is the only strategist while you have coveted plenty of commanders now. Personally I favor the strategist class.

It's an iron mine building and nothing else. In return, it usually comes with a decent garrison, and many of the "resource" settlements have decent fortifications (but not farmlands or livestock pastures). There are no minor settlements without a resource assigned. I find it works pretty well - minor settlements aren't the hopeless speed bumps they are in Thrones of Brittania, where you have to play zone defense with your armies or risk losing a bunch of settlements to an enemy army, while allowing for cities to still take center stage, and reducing the number of build slots now that unit recruitment buildings are no longer a thing. Resource bulidings provide a lot of the raw economic power that's multiplied by city buildings, and some of the resources are rare and/or important. You need copper to fight corruption effectively (so you can build mints), and there are only 6 copper mines on the map, in a couple specific areas. Jade is also an important resource for anti-corruption buildings, and there are only 2 of those. Silk Tea, Spices for their economic power, Horse Pastures for reduced cav maintenance, Weaponsmiths, Armorsmiths, and Horse Tamers that periodically drop new items in your lap, Trade Ports that extend your trade range, even mundane Iron, Tools, and Wood to unlock some building options- deciding where to go on the map is very interesting because of what it might unlock for you. The only "boring" resources are the food ones, but you'll need those to support your cities anyway.

This faction reminds me of the Parthia from Rome II: Main focus on archer cavalry? Check Starting in a bad position? Check Everyone and their grandma wants to fk you in the ass the first few turns? Check Damn unstoppable if you get the ball rolling? Check. At least Gongsun Zan can use normal spear and sword units at the start instead of the dudes in pajamas in Rome II who routed if someone looked at them with a frown.

Idk why but this campaign seems really difficult for me. Even on easy/normal. Im not new to total war games but wow. I usually dont have issues capturing outlying 2 han provinces when i get a dilema to either attack my mentor or other person(if i pick other person then Yuan Shao declares war on me early, he does the same even when I pick attacking my mentor just later on. BUt regarldess i struggle to get rid of the my mentor faction and then other faction which is ruled by same blood? considering they have also gongsun in their name they attack me after 10 turns or so and then i have 2 front war and i cant deal with that early :/

tl:dr- Focus on green Reforms in the early game instead of red ones. Pin Gongsun Du in a corner early, wait for Liu Yu to get in a war with the Bandit King, and don't worry about Yuan Shao too much (yet) if he has to fight through anyone else to get to you. Should carry you through a good 30 or so turns and three or four commanderies for a solid start. I've done it a couple times, maybe my way isn't the 'right' way but my early campaign is focus on food production and supply reserves, make my cities' garrisons too big and costly to attack. Your army's already good enough to deal with most early threats so I ignore military reforms for awhile in favor of city building. If you focus on building up cities (and their garrison sizes) then they're too costly to attack, this frees up your army to reach out deeper into enemy territory. I box in Gongsun Du first then ignore him (or take him out if I can do it without comprising my southern borders). He can't afford to attack anything with the one poor commandery he'll have, so if he attacks you that's his ass, he'll be running into literal brick walls depleting his own strength. If he doesn't attack you, that's his ass, those brick walls will only get bigger during peacetime. If he signs a non-aggression pact with you, that's his ass because..well, you get the idea. As for the dilemma, I usually choose Bide Your Time b/c Liu Yu will either declare on me soon afterwards anyway, or he will be in a war with the Bandit King and you can force that two-front war onto Liu Yu rather than rushing into it yourself. Yuan Shao is more dangerous because he can afford bigger wars, but he has other problems to his south so if he declares on you early, you have a solid base to defend until he gets wrapped up in other wars. This reply is probably way too late to be useful to you but maybe if anybody else is having problems, this is one approach.

Another faction with nomadic specialization of hit and run light cav warfare after Ma Teng and the 4th faction specialized in mounted warfare in general. I am start to feeling that Han people are related to Steppe nomads in some significant ways. By the way. Is Youbeiping basically Beijing and its surrounding suburb before it become Chinese capital. It looks like it's in the same geographical region according to Google map.

I wouldn't call either of those cav specialized, any more than I'd say Lui Bei is ranged-focus because his UUs are ranged. It's just one of the menu of bonuses they have.

It's a faction overview, it's supposed to help people along the way, that's the whole point of the video. If I don't cover the initial dilemma I get people asking me in the comments what they're supposed to do, and when I do cover it I get people complaining that I'm "spoiling" a story that happened 2000 years ago, and happens within the first 10 turns of the campaign.

Yeah I wouldn’t call covering the initial dilemma spoiling the story, every faction has one and it happens very early in the game, and for some it has a more significant impact on the direction of the faction that for others, so it’s really more like an inherent part of the faction that should be covered. Even CA disclosed what the initial dilemma would be for several factions when previewing them. Plus this is not exactly a story oriented game, it’s a sandbox strategy game, I doubt many people are that concerned with the story elements anyway. Although, MrSmartDonkey, to be fair OP didn’t just complain about you revealing the “story” aspects, he did say “or announce it” so it’s not like he was just putting you between a rock and a hard place with the people that want to hear about it and those who don’t as you suggest; I guess if you feel enough people care about this you could give a spoiler alert when starting the initial dilemma portion and give them a time stamp to skip to when it is over so they can opt out of it, that should appease both groups.
