There is never too long to paint a mini I could sit perfecting blends until my hair is as long and luscious as Brent's. Edit: Why Brent is the mini painting Bob Ross 1. A great hairstyle that makes them recognizable 2. Calm informative tutorials that help the viewer relax with their soothing voices 3. Wholesome animal moments whether it is cats or Bob's baby squirrels 4. Good at what they do and can do it quickly 5. Settles for imperfection 6. Just nice people 7. They both give good advice that helps others learn

I have been feeling really guilty for the fact that I haven't been getting much done on my pile of shame. I have been picking at one mini for 2 weeks now. Its looking great! But I only work on it 1 maybe two hours every other day or so. I have the time, just not the focus or motivation. Your comments in the first of the video reminded me I am not the only one that spends as much time as I do. I don't have to feel guilty I am not pumping out quantity. I work like I work and that is good enough. So, thank you. For your words, your videos and your efforts.

I started measuring my time for my 40k Harlequin army and it takes me around 3-5 hours per model. I once sat down with my friends for a Discord paint session and while I was busy just getting the base coat right they were finishing full batches. It was a bit disheartening to say the least. I think when it comes down to the question how much time you should invest in your minis you need to distinguish whether you want good looking models or a painted army. Because even though I have one of the most elite, low count army in the game, I'm beginning to get tired of painting the same paint scheme over and over again. I couldn't fathom painting 120 guardsmen to the same standard. I'm definitely not the type to sacrifice on quality though. After all I take big joy from the feeling of accomplishment of watching my minis on the shelf. So one lesson I take from this is to focus on small skimish type games for my next project or on single models entirely.

First of all, great vid and thumbs up for tackling that topic! It's not an easy topic in a world of Instagram were you can easily see a few compition winning models each day! As you said, it totally depends on the goal with the mini. At least that's my point of view on the matter over quantitiy vs. quality. Usually I take way more time on my 40k minis as I know, that at some time, each one could be seen as a single model. Same, if not even more so, is true for my character models. On the other hand, my Kings of War army, which is mulitbased, stops right at the wash stage for the majority of the models. If I feel like it, I pick out a few more details on the guys in the front row, but as there are quite a lot of minis cramped on a comparatively small base, the overall look and feel is determined by all minis as a whole and not by the single pouch on guy 13 in the 3rd row :) Also it's a lot more satisfing to play a rank'n'flank game with fully painted, crowded bases :D

Great video. Myself, like many I believe, started with $150 GW boxed games of 50 miniatures. This was so overwhelming because I also started by trying to match the box art. This left me playing the game for 1-2 years with mostly grey plastic or even worse, never playing the game for 2 years while I fell in and out of the struggle of painting everything in the box before I ever played the game. (eventually finding out that I had put 100's of hours into painting a game that I didnt even know if I liked!) Very recently with my 4th boxed game I am starting to really see the benefit of having some paint on a model vs none or, a quick and dirty paint job vs no paint job or no game. It's taken about 4 years, but it's starting to click.

I used to be overly obsessed with trying to get stuff done and my old armies unanimously wound up hideous and I didn't like it. then I got so burnt out on the cycle of obsessing and hating the finished product that I stopped painting and became a lowly "Tin boy", which I also really didn't like. Now, I relegate myself to painting as best I can so I can be proud of the finished models and just keep a minimum of 1-2 hrs of painting a day and for me I found that wasn't fast, but satisfying (and also exhausting when you choose to have Space Orks and Imperial Guard as your two main armies. Yikes, haha)

This video paired well with one of Miniac's latest videos about changing his painting process so he could enjoy painting more and have more fun. At the end of the day for the majority of the people in the hobby that's probably the most important thing. Just also important to realize that challenging yourself, while sometimes scary, can be really fun too! Also while I'm sure there's more to be done on all the models you painted, I thought all the faces on the human characters looked good, and really elevates the model.

I really like how your videos are often more "musing about hobbying while some hobbying goes on in the background". Very relaxing and interesting, definitely provokes my thoughts. I also like how you bring up how you are willing to just "go for it" without planning too much, and are willing to simply redo things or change colors midway through. I've previously had a more perfectionist mindset when painting (I must get it right the first time!), but I've been hearing your voice in my head when I realize I don't like something, and I've gone through with changing it. I'm in the middle of my biggest project ever (the older Leman Russ model) and have had to make many do-overs. Magnetizing it is difficult, and at one point I had put two layers of basecoat down only to realize I didn't like the color -- so without stopping to plan, I made a decision to mix some paints and achieve the perfect color. Two more basecoats and while it looks very different than my original plan, I love it! Thanks for your efforts and passion. :)

It's fairly obvious that if you're painting grunts, you want to cut back on the details, if nothing else for your own sanity and to avoid burnout. Not so much for a perfectionist and this is where you need to let go and not paint that bolter or rifle in sixteen colors and blended NMM effects. Just block in the colors and wash it. You should also respect what it is you buy. There's been a lot of 'shame collection' videos recently and there are people who have too much money to spend and don't appreciate what they've hidden away. For me something like a character model or an expensive single model, like a Primaris Chaplain, is something precious and special (even if they're monopose and all look the same). You should treat something like that with a modicum of respect and give it the paint job it deserves. edit; My favourite model is the pipe smoking alchemist, he has so much character to him! The dark elf you painted is missing warmth in the armor and it'll probably take a little bit of blending rather than a wash.

Agreed! For a nice/ expensive model I'll always want to give those the time they deserve. Some of these mage sculpts are awesome and deserve a 'real' paintjob, but since they're cheap 3d prints I don't feel so bad about cranking out a quick copy first :-)

Absolutely in love with the colour choice on the eygptian style mage with the scimitar, it actually killed my choice paralysis with a similar mini at my desk. Great Video!

I got to admit that I am seeing how these are painting and thinking seriously about how I would go about painting some of my mini figures. I struggle with patience at times but I also can panic and seriously worry about making a bad job too. This has been a great video

Nice video. I really like the Yeti, it looks amazing. The Djinn is very nice too. I think you should spend some more time on these models. They look good but deserve more time because I think they will all look great (even the tiger)

I love this. As a new painter it's great to see these more simple techniques and how far they can go. Also I get my 3D printer in a month and can't wait to print titan forge minis!!!

This is so relaxing and satisfying to watch- it makes me want to pick up a paint brush! Kudos to you, although you worked fast you achieved smooth creamy looking colour on all the minis - very impressed. And wow, the painted minis highlight just how **dynamic** those Titan Forge minis look... I want a set! Thanks Brent, keep the videos coming, they are so good. P.S. On the Yeti think about Polar-bear fur; although it's white there are underlying grey-brown, even blue, tones. You could wash the fur with a darker tone, do a heavy then light drybrush, then highlight. (Or even wash once with brown, drybrush, then a light wash of another tone, like blue, before final drybrushing). Perhaps put some dirt and mud up it's legs, stick on some foliage (stuck in it's fur), throw a broken-tree on the base. Or here's a really bold one; put a tree/rock on the base, airbrush the shadow of the tree/rock onto the Yeti, and airbrush some lighter tones on one side to give sunlight effect.

My fastest was like 30 mins on a small lotr model and like 8 hours on my first chaos rider om juggernaut. All down to feel and experience but helps not too get to precious about it. Got to add oh my god those wings, simply amazing.

This video popped up at just the right time. Next week I start a new project. Painting a Drunagor all-in set, with a goal of 15 minutes per mini average, or all 150ish in under 40 hours. The plan is 3-tone zenithal (black/bone or grey/white) > assembly line, mass Speedpaints basecoats > drybrush highlights > mass quick spray varnish (maybe) > wash and/or extra touchups > final mass varnish > done EDIT:90 minutes to 2 hours to get a base coat you were happy with... eeesh. Normally if a mini takes me more than 90 minutes to fully complete I'm angry about how much time I'm wasting on it.
