I'm still more then confused why the fuck the huge indie boom happened. Don't get me wrong, I love indies and enjoy them usually quite a bit more. I mean a shitton of gamers go NUTS over graphics, can't look fancy enough. And get along with all that "nice" lootbox gambling and all of that nonsense. Yet Minecraft is still hugely popular, tough it could never shine in graphics. And here is shovel knight. 8 fucking Bits (sorta). People love it. Altough most of the recent players propably never even touched a NES game besides SMB. Anyway, glad Yacht Club had such a success with Shovel Knight. It really is damn fantastic, just the little details alone make it worth. Don't know how and why they made it, but glad they did.

@@sagichdirdochnicht4653 what happens is that AAA game companies started to just loon at ways to monetize "content" see how much were they able to get away with while offering the minimun possible without even trying to strike a balance between making money and actually caring about the playerbase then suddenly some small teams started putting actual effort into their games and well this kind of stuff happens shovel knight reminded people of what a good ol game felt like, you paid for the game and not only get a good experience but you also get a FULL game something that is a finished product something with love put into it and that took the approach of "HOW MUCH CAN WE DO while being limited in what we have" and success was guaranted for them :D and AAA have tried to mimick it but besides nintendo welp... yeah nothing has reached there yet

What I really appreciate about Shovel Knight, is that it doesn't misuse blindly the nostalgia for "old-school design". A lot of people misremember old-school design anyway. For example, people tend to think of the first Legend of Zelda as this obtuse game that doesn't tell you anything ("and that's why it's good dammit!"), totally forgetting the fact that each copy came with a MANUAL that would explain the backstory and all enemies and even have hints for finding all dungeons (and also a straight out walkthrough for the first two!), and that was the primary source of knowledge that would spread around between players. The important point is that the game didn't try to be obtuse, it's just not everything could be put within the game. And many retro games misremember this kind of stuff, so for example they design something that deliberately hides information and makes discovery frustrating and it's like... why? And what I really appreciate about Shovel Knight is that it is inspired by old-school design, but doesn't follow many misconceptions about old-school design, you know, and is actually really modern in terms of... well, pretty much everything, which is what makes it such a well-received retro-styled game. It takes all the good old-school philosophies but implements them with the modern-style finesse.

Exactly. They recognise what worked and what didn't, as well as the limitations of the time. The palette is made to resemble styles brought about by early hardware restrictions, but isn't actually restricted. The soundtrack is similar in this way as well, using retro instruments but without the need to limit the actual content of the music. The gameplay feels much smoother than older games, but seems like what they were aiming to achieve. It's everything that retro games *could've* been, not everything that retro games *were*.

Honestly, not including second quest, the only part of Zelda 1 I would call that obtuse is the entry to dungeon 7, and even then the game does leave you some hints and I've seen one person work out how to get in on their own.

Just imagine what kids *30 Years ago* would say if you traveled through time and gave them the Shovelknight Series in 1989. Every other game after that would look bland in comparison for a while, even though it looks like a game from the late 80s. You can clearly see that the developers understood games way better, thanks to all the time they had to experience them. Makes you think how good games might become in the future! -I am so excited for Fifa 79!-
@eduardorpg645 жыл бұрын
That's because Shovel Knight would be impossible to make 30 years ago. The game seems to look like it was made 30 years ago, but the NES could simply not handle this game. Shovel Knight can display way more colors than the limited color palette that the NES had, a more advanced parallax effect, and, among other things, it has enough storage space so that the games is longer than 30 minutes without making the game extremely difficult like NES games were. It feels like a better game than one from the 80s because IT IS a game that it was impossible to make and run in the 80s.

@@eduardorpg64 It is not only the aesthetics but the mechanics as well. Going for a higher framerate than NES and having a lot more pixels to work with spase-wise really opens a lot of possibility for the level designers. Even though I know they try to teach without tutorials I really wish they taught you that in Showdown attacking during your invulnerability makes your attack slower and cancels your invulnerability. In all the campaigns you were free to abuse invulnerability, so changing that without teaching or saying anything led a buncha annoying stun locks. I get that you can learn it from general combat but when I kept stun locking myself it was hard to think “well, _why_ am I suffering?”, I was only thinking “you know, I _love_ this part of the game where anything I am trying is screwing me more”. You eventually learn to back off when you’re hit by just playing enough but I wish they made a level/game mode/some scenario to learn it. In the other campaigns they do an amazing job of teaching you without a tutorial, but for this mechanic they make it an unknown change with no such teaching. I still love Showdown a lot, it’s just that this soured my experience more than it should have.

The best part of King of Cards in my opinion is the fact that since there are hidden exits to some stages (and the fact that where you go if you find the secret exit for a level is already marked on the map before you find it) that means that if you really wanted to you can skip the later Joustus Houses if you want to. You can even take alternate paths and make each repeated playthrough of King of Cards unique and interesting which I love 😍! Yacht Club definitely inspires me to make my own levels and I'm not surprised that it basically started an Indie game Renaissance.

I would just like to take this opportunity to say that King of Cards is my favourite campaign of the bunch. It's not too combat-heavy, instead putting its focus on puzzle-solving and tricky platforming challenges, and after damn near losing my mind in Shovel of Hope's nerve-wracking final boss (and everything else, because I'm bad at retro-style games) it was a nice way for me to wind down and enjoy some slower-paced, strategic gameplay. I'm not very far into it right now - as I'm writing this I've only just completed the first main area - but I'm certainly enjoying it so far, and the clips you showed of all the other levels have me pretty excited for what's to come. Oh yeah, and there's also Joustus. I'll be honest and say I didn't expect to enjoy it that much, but after spending some time in the first Joustus house I was pleasantly surprised with the experience. Each opponent feels like an in-depth puzzle you have to solve (and some of them _are_ puzzles) - you could be scratching your head for ages trying to figure out the best move to make at some points, but it feels so satisfying to turn the tables on them after all that. Perhaps my favourite opponent so far would be Black Knight in the first Joustus house (dunno if you face him again, but knowing what he's like in other campaigns you probably do). When the game began, he called for Terrorpin and the turtle-like beast came crashing through the wall. At that point, I thought "Oh, it's gonna be a surprise boss fight. Alright then." But then, Black Knight and King Knight jumped up on chairs and started using Terrorpin's back as the Joustus table. I laughed out loud the first time I saw that - the game literally started by subverting my expectations, then it continued to do so throughout the rest of the match. I know this comment is pretty long, but I don't really get many opportunities to talk about this kind of stuff. I love talking about games I like, and King of Cards is no exception. I'm looking forward to Shovel Knight Dig and everything else Yacht Club has in store for the future, but until then, glory to King Knight, you majestic little decadent dandy.

Ay great video, but I think you undersold King Knight and how he controls and his abilities compared to the other characters. His shoulder barge and spin are simultaneously very simple and very complex; the lack of high mobility like spectre means you have to think a little more about platforming, making it more overall like a puzzle platformer like Wario Land. But the cool thing is that you still have a whole heap of mobility options from the various upgrades, so if you want you can traverse the levels in a whole bunch of different ways instead as most of the upgrades are mobility based. It gives you a huge amount of player choice in that regard, and encourages you to experiment. The Armors, especially the Silver and Green armors, let you experiment *even more* with mobility options as well. It’s like a sandbox type thing where you can create all sorts of different wacky ways to traverse levels and make your own routes. I haven’t seen anyone else talking about this and I think it’s one of the things that make this DLC absolutely fucking incredible

Game looks good. It is cool to see how the developers were able to build four independent titles...while keeping the gameplay fresh and familiar in each one.

My friends and I always play smash when we hang out so when they released showdown I was hyped. Since they all love shovel knight I decided to have them try it and now it’s our big game rn

I really love the normal gameplay so far, it's very unique, and I constantly die because my brain isn't used to the mechanics yet... even after a few hours already. I'd say I still enjoyed Specter Knight more, but Joustus is probably what will make me end up loving this mode the most. I'm not even halfway through the game, just arrived at the second Joustus house, and it's so fun. I'm normally not a fan of games where you have to think ahead, or puzzles... or just... think in general. But this one somehow magically got me addicted. And while I haven't gotten a single gem sweep for like... the entire first section of the game, I'm rolling them now more often and often. It's magic.

So are we all just gonna ignore that Joustus is really similar to that one board game from Skylanders? Also would like to mention that this update is my favorite. Showdown is one of my favorite multiplayer games ever, and King of Cards is, by far, my favorite campaign I’ve been playing through.

Dude, imagine if Yacht Club Games was around at the start of the popularization of video games, using Shovel Knight to compete with Mario, Sonic, and all the other mascot characters? That'd be dope.

Bro I don't even remember how long I waited for King of Cards. It got to a point where my brain literally forgot entirely about it lmao I only knew the game came out when I saw King Knight on the Switch's news page and i was so happy lmao, I literally got up and screamed "YES! YES! FINALLY!" Well worth the wait, I don't understand how Yacht Club Games can still find ways to innovate for a game with came out 5 years ago.

I’m really sad to see it all end, especially with my remaining questions. What was the past shared between Dark, Snow, Shovel, and Shield Knight? What the hell are Goldarmors? Are they knights of Pridemore? If so, then are the knights within the villages freelancers? What was Phantom Striker’s mistake? Why are you using a female Shovel Knight?

My only nitpick with King of cards was that they added an achievement for cheating in joustus instead of making one for clearing everything joustus related WITHOUT cheating, y'know like i did in my first playthrough. I do not want an achievement telling me/showing everyone, that i cheated, i want one that says "Hey, joustus is hard as balls to master, but i did it suckas, all on my own"
